Why it's worth your hours

Orizuru Tower stands next to the A-Bomb Dome. The firm behind it, Hiroshima Mazda, was founded in 1933 on that very district (Saruyamachi) and says it lost all its staff and its building on 6 August 1945. The tower is its answer: a place to see Hiroshima's past, present and future at once.

You ride up to the roof deck, called Hiroshima Hill, for a view over the city and the Dome and, on a clear day, as far as Mt Misen on Miyajima, according to the tower's floor guide. A spiral slope called Sanpozaka winds down through the building; the Orizuru Wall is where you fold a paper crane and drop it down (the tower charges ¥100 for that). Inside there is a shop of Hiroshima goods, cafes and the Mitchan Sohonten okonomiyaki restaurant.

The catch is price and priority. At ¥2,200 it is an extra, and on a short call the Peace Memorial Museum should come first. It does make a neat add-on, because it is a minute from the Dome and the restaurant solves lunch.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. The roof is the point: entry is until 18:00 in most months and 19:00 in July–September.
  2. The tower sells tickets online; the ticket page says the price is ¥2,200 for adults, plus ¥100 for the crane.
  3. Midday tram note: Line 7 runs about hourly then (our transport board). Line 1 to Hondori is every 12 minutes and a walk of 5–10 minutes.
  4. Mitchan Sohonten is listed on the tower's floor guide, which makes lunch simple. Its hours are posted separately, so check them on the day.
  5. Coin lockers are by the entrance gate on the 1st floor (a charge applies), and there is a delivery counter for souvenirs.
