About

About Omaezaki

Omaezaki is the southernmost point of Shizuoka, a town of about 31,000 on a cape between Suruga Bay and the Enshu coast, half-way between Tokyo and Osaka. Its port handles car carriers and containers; cruise ships have called since 2019, and the town turns out with fishing flags and taiko for each one. Behind the cape lies Makinohara, the largest tea plateau in Japan, and beyond it the Tokaido line towns of Kakegawa and Shizuoka.

Quick answers

Omaezaki cruise port questions

Is a short (2-3 hour) call enough to see Omaezaki?

Yes, if you plan it tightly. Our timed plan "The lighthouse, the cape and a market bowl" runs ~2h door to door from the gangway and still banks 60 minutes before all-aboard. The minute-by-minute version is on the plans page at port-of-japan.com/omaezaki/plans/.

How much can you do in Omaezaki with 4-6 hours ashore?

The half-day is "Kakegawa Castle by hired taxi" (~4.5h door to door) — every transit leg counted from the berth, with an escape route if you run late. The timed steps are on the plans page at port-of-japan.com/omaezaki/plans/.

Which cruise ships call at Omaezaki in 2026?

Westerdam all include Omaezaki on their 2026 Japan itineraries. Each ship has its own guide on this site decoding every port it calls at, and this page carries plans sized to the hours each ship typically spends here. The full official 2026 call list — every ship with counts and seasons — is at port-of-japan.com/cruises-to/omaezaki/.

How do you get from the Omaezaki cruise terminal into town?

① City shuttle from the stand inside the berth area: free at the 2023 and 2026 calls, to sights in Omaezaki and Makinohara. Destinations and times are only announced on the day ② Or a taxi from the stand on the apron: lighthouse about 10 min by car (council figure), Nabura Market 1.9 km, about 5 min ③ Lighthouse → Cape Park 1 min on foot; Marine Park beach → market 6 min on foot Fare: Shuttle free on past calls · taxi about ¥1,100–2,000 to the lighthouse and about ¥1,000 to the market on the meter (our estimates, distance only). You cannot walk out of the wharf; the gate is closed to pedestrians on ship days (secondary). Taxi floors use the Shizuoka tariff of 25 November 2025: ¥700 for the first 1.17 km, then ¥100 per 285 m, before time charges. The fleet is small; 15–20 min waits were reported late in the morning. For today's exact departure times, open Google Maps transit directions from the pier — local timetables change by day, and the app knows today's.

How do you get from the Omaezaki cruise port to Kakegawa Station and Kakegawa Castle?

① Taxi from the wharf: Kakegawa Station 32 km, 50 min by the council’s figure (29 min free-flow by routing). The castle is 7 min on foot from the station ② Or hourly hire: ¥3,850 per 30 min, ¥1,920 per extra 15 min on the official tariff, about ¥7,700 an hour Fare: About ¥12,400–12,500 each way on the meter (our estimate, distance only) · castle ¥410, tea house ¥510. Runs Kodama from Kakegawa: Shizuoka 13 min ¥1,730, Hamamatsu 11 min ¥1,380 (IC fares incl. unreserved seat). No railway reaches Omaezaki, so the taxi is the only practical way to the Shinkansen. A secondary guide quoted about ¥16,000 for a castle round trip. Book the taxi or an hourly hire before the call; the stand empties by mid-morning.

How do you get from the Omaezaki cruise port to Shizuoka city (Sunpu Castle Park, Kunozan Toshogu)?

① Taxi to JR Kikugawa Station, 26 km, about 40 min (council and Princess figures) ② JR Tokaido line, Kikugawa → Shizuoka, 39 min, no change (for example 10:02 → 10:41; back 13:31 → 14:10) ③ Or taxi to Kakegawa and the Kodama, 13 min to Shizuoka ④ In Shizuoka: Sunpu Castle Park 15 min on foot from the station; Nihondaira Ropeway by Shizutetsu bus route 42, about 45–50 min Fare: Kikugawa → Shizuoka ¥770 IC · Kakegawa → Shizuoka Kodama ¥1,730 IC (local 46 min, ¥860) · taxi to Kikugawa about ¥10,600 on the meter, our estimate. Runs Tokaido line about every 10–20 min (not transcribed); Kodama hourly or better. About 75 min each way door to door, so Shizuoka city is a one-sight day and only on a 9-hour call. Sunpu Castle Park’s paid buildings close on Mondays, including Monday 12 April 2027. A hired car from the wharf is 50 km, 44–45 min free-flow, about ¥18,000 on the meter each way, our estimate. Allow 60–80 min in traffic.

When do cherry blossoms bloom at Omaezaki?

Around Mar 24 for first bloom and Apr 2 for full bloom, by the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 records as computed by Port of Japan (reference station: Shizuoka station). The last decade has run roughly 5–6 days earlier than those normals, and the date wanders by a week or more each year. The port-by-port table is at port-of-japan.com/journal/japan-cherry-blossom-cruise-ports/.

How much typhoon risk does an Omaezaki call carry?

Omaezaki sits on the Tokai coast, which averages 3.5 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. Ships reroute rather than sail into a storm; the coast-by-coast picture and the booking-window advice are at port-of-japan.com/journal/typhoon-season-japan-cruise/.

How many cruise ships visit Omaezaki in 2026?

3 cruise calls are on the official Omaezaki Port Passenger Ship Invitation Council (call notices) and Makinohara City schedule for 2026 (Apr–Nov 2026), 3 by international ships and 0 by Japanese-operated ships. Every ship and its season is listed at port-of-japan.com/cruises-to/omaezaki/.

Where do cruise ships dock at Omaezaki?

At West Wharf berth No. 2 (西ふ頭2号岸壁), a −12 m quay built in 1985 for car carriers and domestic RORO ships. Every cruise call since the first in 2019 has used it, including Westerdam and Diamond Princess. There is no terminal building: customs and immigration, the tourist-information booth and the shuttle and taxi stands are tents on the apron. The deep-water Megishi container terminal is not the cruise berth.

Is there a shuttle from the wharf?

Usually, but nobody publishes it in advance. The port council’s record of the 2023 Westerdam call says shuttle buses took passengers to sights in Omaezaki and Makinohara. Local TV showed the same at the April 2026 call. Princess Cruises’ own 2026 port sheet says only “confirm locally”. A secondary DIY guide describes a loop to Nabura Market and the lighthouse every 20–30 minutes; we could not verify it. Pick up the map at the information tent and note the last return time.

Can I see Mount Fuji from Omaezaki?

Possibly, on a crisp clear morning. The lighthouse is about 96 km from the summit, more than twice Shimizu’s distance. The lighthouse association lists Fuji, the Izu peninsula and the Southern Alps among its views. No visibility statistics exist for the cape, and Holland America’s own tour text says views are not guaranteed. April is a windy, hazy month here. Do not plan the day around it.

Can I reach Kakegawa Castle or Shizuoka city in a 9-hour call?

Kakegawa, yes: 32–35 km, 30–50 minutes each way by taxi, about ¥12,500 on the meter each way by our estimate, or by hourly hire. Shizuoka city is 50 km and only sensible by hired car or ship’s tour. By taxi to Kikugawa and the JR train it is about 75 minutes each way. On the Monday 12 April 2027 Westerdam call, Sunpu Castle Park’s paid buildings are closed, so a Shizuoka day means Kunozan Toshogu and Nihondaira only.

Do I need cash?

Yes. The lighthouse donation (¥300), the market stalls and any local bus are cash; some taxis take cards, not all. There is no ATM or exchange at the wharf. The nearest mapped ATM is the 7-Eleven beside Nabura Market, about 1.9 km by road, and a FamilyMart about 1 km away. Kakegawa Castle’s payment methods are not published; the Nihondaira Ropeway takes cards.

What is closed on a Tuesday or a Monday?

Tuesday: Nabura Market, the Tea Museum at Kanaya and the tourist association in town. That matters for the Tuesday 10 November 2026 Diamond Princess call. Monday: Sunpu Castle Park’s paid buildings in Shizuoka and Kakegawa’s small Ninomaru Museum. The Kakegawa keep and palace, the lighthouse, Kunozan Toshogu and Grinpia are open. The lighthouse closes 12:00–13:00 every day and in strong wind.

Is April tea season?

The very start of it. The Shizuoka tea market’s first new-tea auction was 18 April in 2025, and Grinpia Makinohara’s tea-picking season opened on 11 April in 2026. A 12 April call should find the plateau at its brightest green, with picking just beginning in a normal year; ask on the day. The Tea Museum and the factory tour run all year, and the October calls fall in the autumn flush.

What should I wear?

A windproof layer, whatever the forecast. Omaezaki is one of the windier spots on this coast: the JMA normal is 5.1 m/s in April and 4.9 m/s over the year. The cape is a windsurfing centre. April highs average 18 °C. The lighthouse stairs are steep and the Kunozan precinct is stone steps only.
