About

About Nagoya

Nagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture, and every railway into it meets at Nagoya Station. Big cruise ships berth on Kinjo Pier, beside a railway museum, LEGOLAND and an exhibition hall; the city centre is 24 minutes away by the Aonami Line. What people come for is a castle with a rebuilt palace, the sword shrine of Atsuta Jingu, the Toyota industry museum and a food culture of red miso, eel and fried chicken wings.

Quick answers

Nagoya cruise port questions

Is a short (2-3 hour) call enough to see Nagoya?

Yes, if you plan it tightly. Our timed plan "Kinjo Pier on foot: the railway museum and Maker’s Pier" runs ~2.5h door to door from the gangway and still banks 60 minutes before all-aboard. The minute-by-minute version is on the plans page at port-of-japan.com/nagoya/plans/.

How much can you do in Nagoya with 4-6 hours ashore?

The half-day is "Toyota museum, a station lunch and Noritake Garden" (~5.5h door to door) — every transit leg counted from the berth, with an escape route if you run late. The timed steps are on the plans page at port-of-japan.com/nagoya/plans/.

Which cruise ships call at Nagoya in 2026?

Norwegian Jade, Seven Seas Explorer, Mitsui Ocean Fuji & Sakura all include Nagoya on their 2026 Japan itineraries. Each ship has its own guide on this site decoding every port it calls at, and this page carries plans sized to the hours each ship typically spends here. The full official 2026 call list — every ship with counts and seasons — is at port-of-japan.com/cruises-to/nagoya/.

How much typhoon risk does a Nagoya call carry?

Nagoya sits on the Tokai coast, which averages 3.5 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. Ships reroute rather than sail into a storm; the coast-by-coast picture and the booking-window advice are at port-of-japan.com/journal/typhoon-season-japan-cruise/.

How many cruise ships visit Nagoya in 2026?

32 cruise calls are on the official Nagoya Port Authority (名古屋港管理組合) 2026 cruise call schedule schedule for 2026 (Calendar 2026 (the port’s list starts 28 February)), 11 by international ships and 21 by Japanese-operated ships. Every ship and its season is listed at port-of-japan.com/cruises-to/nagoya/.

Where do cruise ships dock in Nagoya?

At one of two piers. The Port Authority’s rule of thumb is that most cruise ships use Garden Pier and larger ships use Kinjo Pier. For 2026–27, Norwegian Jade (10, 14 and 28 November 2026) and Navigator of the Seas (26 February 2027) are listed at Kinjo Pier berths 80–81 (金城ふ頭80・81号). Japanese-market ships such as Asuka II, Asuka III and Mitsui Ocean Fuji, and smaller luxury ships such as Seven Seas Explorer, use Garden Pier No.3, about 5 minutes on foot from Nagoyako subway station. Mid-size ships have used both on different calls, so read your daily programme.

How do I get from Kinjo Pier to Nagoya Station?

Walk to Kinjo-futo Station on the Aonami Line: about 10 minutes by MLIT’s figure; 1.2 km and 15–17 minutes by our estimate. Where passengers leave the restricted quay is not confirmed. The Port Authority ran a free quay–station shuttle for Diamond Princess in 2016; whether one runs in 2026 is not confirmed, so check the daily programme. The train to Nagoya takes 24 minutes and costs ¥360. Back from Nagoya, trains leave every 15 minutes between 13:00 and 16:59, and every 10 minutes from 17:00 to 18:59 on weekdays.

What is near the berth at Kinjo Pier?

Around Kinjo-futo Station, about 1.2 km from berths 80–81: the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park (10:00–17:30, ¥1,200, closed Tuesdays), LEGOLAND Japan (10:00–17:00, dated tickets from ¥4,900) and Maker’s Pier, with restaurants, including a Nagoya-meshi shop, and free Wi-Fi. No terminal building is listed at Kinjo, and no convenience store or ATM on the pier is confirmed. The Cruise Nagoya water bus runs from Kinjo to Garden Pier (40 min, ¥1,200) at 11:40, 13:35 and 15:35 on the 2026 timetable; whether it runs on the November call days is not confirmed.

What is closed on Tuesday 10 November 2026?

The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park beside the berth (its 2026 calendar lists 4, 10, 17 and 24 November as closed). Ghibli Park, closed every Tuesday. Atsuta Horaiken’s Jingu-ten and Matsuzakaya-ten, and Yamamotoya Sohonke’s Honke. Open: Nagoya Castle’s Hommaru Palace (the keep itself is closed), Atsuta Jingu, Osu Kannon, the Toyota museum, Tokugawaen, Noritake Garden, the aquarium, LEGOLAND and Horaiken’s Honten. Garden Pier’s Port Building, the icebreaker Fuji and Port House are closed until 30 November. Sunset is 16:50.

How much is a taxi from the cruise port?

Nagoya’s tariff from 14 October 2025 is ¥500 for the first 0.91 km, then ¥100 per 232 m. From berths 80–81, by our estimate on distance alone, without traffic or tolls: Nagoya Station 16.6 km, about 19 minutes, about ¥7,300; Atsuta Jingu about ¥6,200; Osu Kannon about ¥7,300; Nagoya Castle 19.2 km, about ¥8,500. The route may use the toll expressway. A taxi stand at the quay or at Kinjo-futo Station is not confirmed. The private car tour that picks up at the cruise terminal is the other answer.

Can I do Ghibli Park on a cruise call?

Not on Tuesday 10 November: the park is closed every Tuesday. Tickets are date-specified, sold in advance only (sales open on the 10th, two months ahead, at 14:00 JST) and never at the park. From the berth it is about 1 h 45 min to 2 hours each way by our estimate: the Aonami Line, then the subway and the Linimo, 41 minutes of riding from Nagoya. On 14 November (06:30–16:00) that leaves about three hours in the park, which we do not recommend. On 28 November (08:30–19:00) about 10:45–15:30 in the park is feasible with tickets bought ahead.

What should I eat in Nagoya, and where?

Hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice): Atsuta Horaiken’s Honten is open on Tuesdays; lunch last order 14:00, expect a queue. Miso-katsu: Yabaton’s Yabacho Honten in Osu, 11:00–21:00, no closing day, or its JR Nagoya Station branch from 7:00. Miso-nikomi udon: Yamamotoya Sohonke’s Towers-ten at Nagoya Station, 11:00–23:00. Kishimen: Miya Kishimen inside Atsuta Jingu, 9:00–16:30. Tebasaki at lunch: Sekai no Yamachan’s Meieki Shinkansen-guchi branch from 11:30; most branches open at 17:00. For the 06:30 arrival on 14 November, try Komeda’s morning service (to 11:00): order a drink and toast comes free, with sweet bean paste as one choice.

Do I need cash? Do IC cards and credit cards work?

Carry some yen. Every Nagoya city subway station takes credit-card touch payment from 3 September 2026 (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover, UnionPay). On the Aonami Line, card touch is not confirmed, but Suica, PASMO and the other national IC cards work through manaca’s mutual use. No ATM on Kinjo Pier is confirmed, so withdraw in the city: 7-Eleven’s Seven Bank ATMs and Japan Post Bank ATMs take foreign Visa and Mastercard. Temple stalls and some older restaurants may be cash only. Tax-free shopping changed on 1 November 2026: you pay the tax in the shop and are refunded after customs checks the goods at departure.
