Maizuru is Kyoto's naval port, a working navy town sold as 'Kyoto' though the famous city is over 90 minutes away by train. It is known for eight red-brick warehouses built 1902–1918, for harbour boats that pass navy destroyers, and as the port where 660,000 people came home after the war. Most ships tie up about 2 km from Nishi-Maizuru Station, where a local train reaches Amanohashidate, a 3.6 km sandbar of 8,000 pines, one of Japan's Three Views.

Cash, or tap a contactless Visa/Mastercard/JCB/Amex/Diners/Discover/UnionPay on and off (local and rapid trains only); transit IC cards unverified. The 10:13 and 13:14 “Aka-matsu” runs need a reserved numbered ticket. At the far end: lift/cable to the viewpoint, rental bikes across the sandbar.

Maizuru sits on the Kinki coast, which averages 3.4 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. Technically yes; honestly, barely. The JR limited express takes about 1.5 hours to Kyoto Station, costs ¥3,420 one-way (¥3,620 on peak days such as Saturday 24 October 2026), and the direct trains run about every two hours (6:46, 8:32, 10:35, 12:36, 14:36 from Nishi-Maizuru) — on a typical 8–10-hour stop ashore the round trip leaves you about three hours in the city with zero margin for a missed train. Take the ship’s Kyoto excursion or spend the day better closer in.
It is the best independent move this port has. The Kyoto Tango Railway runs direct from Nishi-Maizuru to Amanohashidate in about 40 minutes for ¥650, roughly hourly. At the sandbar: the lift or cable to the viewpoint (a few hundred yen each way), rental bikes across the pine spit, and the famous “bridge to heaven” view. Half a day, done properly, with train margin to spare.
