Tsuruga is a small working port on the Sea of Japan with a story no other Japanese harbour can tell. Polish orphans in the 1920s and Jewish refugees carrying Sugihara's 'visas for life' in 1940–41 came ashore here, and the museum that tells it stands where they landed. Nearby rises Kehi Jingu's 10.9-metre vermilion torii of 1645, one of Japan's three great wooden gates, and the quay is about 5 minutes by car from town.

Tsuruga sits on the Hokuriku coast, which averages 2.8 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. Because twice in twenty years this small harbor was the door to safety: 763 Polish orphans rescued from Siberia landed here in 1920–22, and in 1940–41 Jewish refugees carrying transit visas written by diplomat Chiune Sugihara stepped ashore here — the only Japanese port that received them. The Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum (¥500, closed Wednesdays) tells both stories a few minutes’ walk from the small-ship berth.

The museum quarter (Port of Humanity Museum, Red Brick Warehouse, free rail museum) sits in one cluster, the great torii of Kehi Jingu is a shuttle stop away, and the original sauce katsudon is a ten-minute walk from the shrine. Note the cluster’s shared closing day: Wednesday — but on the Wednesday 14 Oct 2026 Diamond Princess call the Port of Humanity Museum has a special opening (closed Thu 15 Oct instead); the Red Brick Warehouse and Railway Museum have not announced one.
