A curated forest of a bookshop beside the shinkansen station — the pleasant surprise of the newest corner of this very old port. Ten dry minutes before the shuttle home. Open 10:00–20:00; closed one or two days a month (check its news page).

Why Chienamiki bookstore at otta is famous

A city-owned bookshop run by Maruzen, opened in 2022 in otta beside the station, with curved timber shelving rising two storeys. Every book can be browsed and bought. It is included because it is the opposite of everything else on this list: not history, just a very good room, free to browse, and three minutes from the shuttle stop.
