Kushiro is eastern Hokkaido's working fish town, foggy about 97 days a year and completely unbothered about it. It is the doorway to Kushiro Marsh, Japan's largest wetland, 28,000 hectares of reed bed on the city's northern edge, and home to red-crowned cranes. Most ships berth downtown, five minutes' walk from the waterfront and 15 from the station and Washo Market, where you build a seafood bowl stall by stall.

The last decade has run roughly 5–6 days earlier than those normals, and the date wanders by a week or more each year. Maples at the nearest JMA observation tree turn around Oct 16 by the 1991–2020 normals — and recent years have run later. Yes. Cheapest: the Tsurui-line bus from Kushiro Station to the Kushiro City Marsh Observatory (39 min, ¥690 cash or WAON; out 8:45/10:25/13:15, back 10:51/12:26/15:06 — the 10:25 out and 12:26 back suit most 9-hour calls). Simplest: a taxi, about 17 minutes and roughly ¥7,000 each way. The Norokko slow train ran its final season with the current cars in 2026 (last run 10 October); no 2027 service has been announced.
Often, and the town is proud of it — JMA normals show about 16 fog days per month in June through August, roughly 97 days a year. Two comforts: sea fog frequently burns off by midday, and the marsh and crane sites sit inland of the worst of it. Pack a warm layer regardless: an August afternoon here averages around 21°C.
