Minato-cho (the biggest ships, plus one ship on some two-ship days — check your daily programme): 6 km out, no terminal, ship shuttle if one runs, or taxi ~20 min. ① Tram from Hakodate-Ekimae — Jujigai stop for the warehouses and Nijukken-zaka, Suehiro-cho for Hachiman-zaka Fare: ¥250–300 by distance (day pass ¥800). Runs every 10 min by day, first tram about 6:30, last about 22:00 (Yachigashira branch every 15 min). Fares rose in December 2025 — older guides still print ¥210–260 and a ¥600 pass. The fare box gives no change and does not change ¥2,000+ notes; IC cards work.

Maples at the nearest JMA observation tree turn around Nov 2 by the 1991–2020 normals — and recent years have run later. Hakodate sits on the Hokkaido coast, which averages 1.9 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. From the Wakamatsu terminal, yes — the market is 300 metres away, a 3-minute walk, and the stalls open from 5:00 (6:00 January–April). From Minato-cho, no: use your ship's shuttle if one runs (the city publishes no stop or timetable) or a taxi, about 20 minutes. Only on late sailings: you need darkness plus about 2.5 hours for the ropeway round trip. Sailing before dusk? Take the summit in daylight — the two-sided isthmus panorama is nearly as good and fits any afternoon.

From 5:00 May–December and 6:00 January–April (shops set their own hours; many close on Wednesdays). It is the rare port where the first hour ashore is the best hour: kaisendon at Kikuyo Shokudo, then the live-squid pond, all before the crowds.

It depends on your berth — some are near the station and market, others need the shuttle. Either way the town itself is compact and flat along the bay, with the Motomachi slopes as the one climb.

The morning market don — squid, uni and crab over rice — is the town’s signature breakfast, and shio (salt) ramen its comfort lunch. Both sit within the walkable station quarter.
