Japan’s cruise-call count is led from here — first outright in 2024, joint-first with Yokohama in 2025 — and almost nobody writes about it in English. This is the correction.
Chuo Wharf puts the town a short bus or taxi away. The largest ships use Kashii Pier, further out — plan the ride, not the walk, and photograph the shuttle timetable before you leave it.
Canal City and the Kawabata arcade cluster nearest the berth; Hakata Station and the ramen floors are one short ride further.
They open toward evening (~18:00) — a daytime call cannot do yatai. Late-stay calls can, and it is worth planning the whole evening around.
According to measurements and operator documents compiled by Port of Japan (verified August 16, 2026), cruise ships at Fukuoka use Hakata Port, Chuo Wharf — Large ships use Kashii Pier, further out.

It is the closest major Japanese port to Korea, China and Taiwan, it sits in the middle of a large city rather than out on an industrial spit, and Hakata Station puts the rest of Kyushu within shinkansen reach. That combination has kept it at the top of Japan’s cruise-call rankings — first outright in 2024 and joint-first with Yokohama in 2025, at 209 calls.
They were two towns either side of the Naka river — Fukuoka the castle town of the samurai to the west, Hakata the merchant port to the east. They merged in 1889, the city took the name Fukuoka and the main station took the name Hakata, which is why both names are still in daily use.
