Miyako is a small port on Iwate's Sanriku coast, where sea urchin is served in milk bottles, and not to be confused with Miyakojima in Okinawa. It is known for Jodogahama, a cove of white rock spires and pines that a 1680s monk likened to the Pure Land. Up the coast at Taro, a ten-metre seawall failed in 2011 and a guide shows you why; the cove is ten minutes by taxi from Fujiwara Wharf.

The Learning Disaster guided tour (¥5,000 for 1–9 people, 60 min) must be booked ahead (0193-77-3305); it is cancelled if a tsunami warning is issued.
Around Apr 18 for first bloom and Apr 24 for full bloom, by the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 records as computed by Port of Japan (reference station: Morioka station). The last decade has run roughly 5–6 days earlier than those normals, and the date wanders by a week or more each year. Maples at the nearest JMA observation tree turn around Nov 21 by the 1991–2020 normals — and recent years have run later. Miyako sits on the Tohoku coast, which averages 2.7 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. Taxi is simplest (~10–15 minutes from Fujiwara Wharf). By public transport: shuttle or taxi to Miyako Station, then the Iwate Kenpoku bus to Oku-Jodogahama — about 24 minutes, IC cards accepted (fares rose on 2026-10-01; a ¥500 day pass also covers it); departures 9:30, 10:40, 11:40, 12:40, 13:40, 15:40, and the last useful return before 16:10 is 14:10. Or ride the Umineko-maru boat from Desaki pier (¥600, 10 min). The free loop bus runs only on Jul–Sep weekends.
