Beppu is Japan's hot-spring capital, a port town in Oita where steam rises from drains, gardens and the gaps between houses. People come for the seven hells of Kannawa, boiling ponds coloured cobalt blue, grey mud and iron red, and for baths of every kind, hot sand included. Beppu Port — Taxi to the hells ~15 min, or route 24 bus from Shiomicho (0.9 km walk), about 15 min. Getting into town: ① Walk about 0.9 km (about 10 min) to the Shiomicho stop on the main road ② Kamenoi Bus route 24 toward APU, about 15 min to Umi Jigoku-mae. The "Sunflower Terminal" stop by the port only has buses at ferry times (none 9:00–16:00)

Around Mar 24 for first bloom and Apr 4 for full bloom, by the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 records as computed by Port of Japan (reference station: Oita station). The last decade has run roughly 5–6 days earlier than those normals, and the date wanders by a week or more each year. Beppu sits on the Northern Kyushu coast, which averages 3.8 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. The hells are for viewing, not bathing — they are boiling. The bathing happens elsewhere: Takegawara’s historic bathhouse and sand baths downtown, and countless onsen across town. Do both: view the hells, then soak like a local.
The main cluster sits in the Kannawa district, about 15 minutes by taxi from the port (from about ¥1,650). There is no shuttle bus. The cheap way is the route 24 bus from Shiomicho, a 10-minute walk. Five of the seven hells are walkable from each other once you arrive; the red Chinoike pond is a short hop further.
