The hells are for viewing, not bathing — they are boiling. The bathing happens elsewhere: Takegawara’s historic bathhouse and sand baths downtown, and countless onsen across town. Do both: view the hells, then soak like a local.
The main cluster sits in the Kannawa district, roughly 15–20 minutes by taxi or shuttle from the port. Five of the seven hells are walkable from each other once you arrive; the red Chinoike pond is a short hop further.
