The half-day is "The volcano crossing" (~5h door to door), which needs a 7-hour call or longer (off the ship 30 minutes after arrival, back at the gangway an hour before all-aboard) — every transit leg counted from the berth, with an escape route if you run late. ① Kagoshima City View loop bus (from Tenmonkan, or Kagoshima-Chuo Station stop 4) to Sengan-en-mae Fare: ¥230 (day pass ¥700, also covers trams). Runs every ~30 min, 8:30–17:30. The Machi-meguri bus has been suspended since April 2025 — City View is the one that runs. It takes contactless credit cards (tap on and off), not Suica-type IC. Or JR Nippo Line from Kagoshima-Chuo to Sengan-en Station, ~10 min, about 2 trains an hour.

The last decade has run roughly 5–6 days earlier than those normals, and the date wanders by a week or more each year. Maples at the nearest JMA observation tree turn around Dec 15 by the 1991–2020 normals — and recent years have run later. Kagoshima sits on the Southern Kyushu coast, which averages 3.9 typhoon approaches a year (JMA 1991–2020 normals) — the peak is August to September. No — the city ferry runs every 15–20 minutes like a bus (¥250, paid on the Sakurajima side) and needs no booking. Yunohira observatory, the highest point visitors may reach, is on the city’s Sakurajima Island View bus: every 30 min from the ferry port 9:30–16:30, 40 min each way, ¥230 a ride (day pass ¥500, contactless cards accepted). A tour only adds the far side of the island (Arimura lava viewpoint).

Light ashfall is Kagoshima normal: shops open, ferries run, umbrellas appear. Only a rare heavy advisory pauses the crossing — in which case Sengan-en garden gives you the volcano as scenery from a safe distance.

Day to day, yes — the volcano puffs ash routinely and the island is inhabited, monitored and set up for visitors, with marked trails and visitor facilities. Follow local guidance on the day; if activity rises, the ferry and viewpoints on the city side still give you the spectacle.

Not necessarily. The shuttle-plus-ferry combination covers the signature experience on your own. Tours earn their fare by combining Sakurajima with Sengan-en garden and the Shiroyama viewpoint in one timed loop.
