The Yaeyama islands are 400 km from Okinawa and 270 from Taiwan, and they have their own language, weave and history. This is not a smaller Naha.
Ride the shuttle. The cruise quay (New Port, opened 2021) takes big ships alongside, but town is 40–50 minutes on foot — most lines run free shuttles to the island ferry terminal, and from there Euglena Mall is 3–5 minutes on foot. Check your daily program for the shuttle, not the map for a walking route.
Ferries leave from the island terminal every 30 minutes or so and take 10–15 minutes. Buy a return with a named departure time and treat the one before your deadline as the real last boat.
It is ~35 minutes each way by car and you cannot swim there — the glass-bottom boat is the point. On short calls, Taketomi is the better use of the clock.
According to measurements and operator documents compiled by Port of Japan (verified August 16, 2026), cruise ships at Ishigaki use New Port cruise quay — Big ships dock — no tender. Town is a shuttle away (~40–50 min on foot).

No. Swimming is prohibited because the currents are strong and the bay is used for black pearl cultivation. Glass-bottom boats run from the beach instead, and they are the intended way to see the water. For swimming, the island’s other beaches — Sukuji and Yonehara among them — are the alternatives.
