In 1852, Chinese labourers being shipped to California revolted aboard an American vessel that then wrecked here. Islanders sheltered the survivors; British and American ships hunted them. The memorial is loud, ornate, and almost nobody visits it.
In 1852 a ship carrying several hundred Chinese labourers to California was wrecked here after a revolt; survivors were hunted by British and American crews and many died on the island. The Tojinbaka is their grave, rebuilt in 1971 in full Chinese style. It is an unusually direct monument to the coolie trade.
