Otaru is a harbour town of 100,000 in Hokkaido that for thirty years around 1900 was the richest town on the island, built on herring. Then the herring stopped coming, and what was left is unusually beautiful: a 1923 canal of stone warehouses and 63 gas lamps, stone banks, and glass workshops. Every call since 2024 has used No.3 Wharf, five to ten minutes' walk from the canal, with a whole street of sushi counters in the old town.

Yes. From No.3 Wharf — which every call since 2024 has used — the canal is about 500 metres (5–10 minutes on foot), JR Otaru Station about 15 minutes and Sakaimachi street about 20, which makes Otaru one of the most walkable cruise ports in Hokkaido. Sapporo is 33–35 minutes by Rapid Airport train (¥800) if you have a long call.
The city condemned it for a road in the 1960s. A citizens’ preservation movement fought for about a decade, and the outcome was a compromise: half the canal was filled in for the road, and half was kept and landscaped. What you walk beside is the half that survived the argument.
