From the berth
About 50–60 min from Wharf No.3: walk to Otaru Station (about 15 min), Chuo Bus route 9 (17–20 min, ¥240), then the ropeway (about 5 min)

Summer season 25 Apr–3 Nov 2026: up 9:00–20:48, down to 21:00

No senior fare is listed for the ropeway; the 60+ discount is for the ski lift only. Children ¥900 return.
Why it's worth your hours

Mount Tengu is the hill behind the town. The ropeway takes about five minutes over a 735 m line and a rise of 271 m, and the operator pitches the top as an aerial stroll over Otaru's old townscape, with the Shakotan Peninsula, the Shokanbetsu mountains and the Sea of Japan in view. The ropeway company also bills the night view as one of Hokkaido's three great night views.

The practical draw is the one thing the walkable port cannot give you: height. You see the harbour, the wharf where you are berthed and the town in one frame. There is a cafe-restaurant at the top with a window-bar counter of about 20 m, a shop, a zipline (daily 13 Oct to 3 Nov) and a hot-air balloon ride (to 20 Oct).

The catch is time and weather. It is a bus and a cable-car ride away, your ship has to be in port late enough for dusk, and in cloud the view disappears. The ropeway shuts for the gap between 4 and 27 November, so late-season calls can miss it entirely. If the ship leaves before 17:00, go up in daylight or skip it.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Take the route 9 bus from stand 4 at the Otaru Station terminal; the city-line fare is ¥240 and the ¥800 day pass gives a ropeway discount at the ticket window.
  2. Ropeway cars leave at :00, :12, :24, :36 and :48 past the hour, and every 6 minutes at busy times.
  3. The summit cafe's food last orders are at 20:00 and the cafe closes at 20:30, so a late visit is for drinks, not dinner.
  4. The ropeway is closed from 4 to 27 November 2026, between the summer and winter seasons.
  5. The top station is 271 m above the base, so dress a layer warmer than you would at the port.

There is a cafe-restaurant at the top with a window-bar counter of about 20 m, a shop, a zipline (daily 13 Oct to 3 Nov) and a hot-air balloon ride (to 20 Oct).
