Takamatsu is the port city of Kagawa, Japan's smallest prefecture, on the Seto Inland Sea, a water of some three thousand islands. It is known for Ritsurin, a garden of six ponds and a thousand hand-trained pines, for Naoshima, the art island an hour offshore, and for Sanuki udon. Every ship ties up at the Sunport quay in the city centre, a castle moated by seawater 10–12 minutes on foot and the garden seven by train.

No, and there are barely any to book. Takamatsu is a walk-it and ride-it port: the castle is five minutes from the berth, the island ferries leave from the same pier, a tram reaches Ritsurin Garden, and the udon shops are self-service. It is one of the easiest independent port days in Japan.
On ten hours or more, yes; on eight only on the 10:14 ferry out and the 14:20 back, with no later boat that returns in time. The ferry is 50 min out and 60 back, from the ferry office about 8 minutes’ walk from the cruise quay. On anything shorter, take Megijima or Ogijima instead: twenty to forty minutes out, also art islands, and almost empty.
