Niigata is a city of bridges, breweries and fish markets, where Japan's sake heartland meets its longest river, the Shinano. It is known for sake above all: the prefecture has more breweries than any other, and a brewery of 1767 stands a short walk from the station. Bandai Bridge, six granite-faced arches of 1929 that rode out the 1964 earthquake, crosses the river downtown; small ships dock near the centre, big ones 24 km out.

Runs E2 from Suehirobashi: 3–4 an hour through the day, every day. Suica-type IC cards (and Mobile Suica) work on Niigata Kotsu buses; no top-up on board; the change machine takes ¥1,000 notes. The quay is opened to the public on call days — locals come to wave ships off.

Maples at the nearest JMA observation tree turn around Nov 15 by the 1991–2020 normals — and recent years have run later. Two very different places. Large ships — Spectrum of the Seas, Diamond Princess, Crystal Symphony — use the East Port (Chuo Wharf), an industrial harbor about 24 km from the city by road: ordinary vehicles and the public are barred from the quay on call days, so plan on whatever your ship arranges (shuttle details are not published) or a taxi of about 24 km (roughly 20–40 minutes, about ¥9,000 each way). Smaller ships — Seabourn Encore, Azamara Pursuit, Nautica — berth at the West Port’s Yamanoshita Wharf: walk 11 minutes to the Suehirobashi stop and the E2 bus reaches Niigata Station in about 16 minutes (¥260, Suica OK). Your daily program names the berth; read it before you plan.
Two, and they stack: the Ponshukan tasting hall inside Niigata Station, where ¥1,000 buys five coins against a wall of the prefecture’s breweries — and Imayo Tsukasa, a 1767 brewery a 15-minute walk from the station, which runs booked 30-minute tours daily (Japanese ¥200) and an English tour at 14:00 on weekdays (¥550). Do the brewery first: it will not let you in after you have been drinking. No car needed for either.
