About

About Sokcho

Sokcho is a fishing and resort town on Korea's north-east coast, about 50 km by road from the DMZ at Goseong and backed by the granite peaks of Seoraksan. Its cruise terminal stands on the Cheongho-dong spit, where refugees from the north settled during the Korean War and still serve squid sundae. Most of the 26 million people who visit each year are Korean weekenders; cruise passengers are a few thousand a year, and Saturday is the busy day.

Quick answers

Sokcho cruise port questions

Is a short (2-3 hour) call enough to see Sokcho?

Yes, if you plan it tightly. Our timed plan "Abai Village, the Gaetbae and the market" runs ~2h door to door from the gangway and still banks 60 minutes before all-aboard. The minute-by-minute version is on the plans page at port-of-japan.com/sokcho/plans/.

How much can you do in Sokcho with 4-6 hours ashore?

The half-day is "Cable car, Sinheungsa and Abai Village" (~4.5h door to door) — every transit leg counted from the berth, with an escape route if you run late. The timed steps are on the plans page at port-of-japan.com/sokcho/plans/.

Which cruise ships call at Sokcho in 2026?

Westerdam all include Sokcho on their 2026 Japan itineraries. Each ship has its own guide on this site decoding every port it calls at, and this page carries plans sized to the hours each ship typically spends here. The full official 2026 call list — every ship with counts and seasons — is at port-of-japan.com/cruises-to/sokcho/.

How do you get from the Sokcho cruise terminal into town?

① The buses do not pass the cruise terminal. Taxi ~5 min (about ₩4,800) or walk 2.3 km, ~31 min, to the Express Bus Terminal stop ② Bus 7 or 7-1 to the Seoraksan car-park terminus (= Sogongwon); 30–45 min from the bus terminals (secondary; the stop offset is not published) ③ Back: from the Seoraksan terminus the official timetable is reliable — 15:53, 16:10, 16:27, 16:44 … last 20:35 (7-1), 19:00 (7) Fare: Adult ₩1,700 cash or ₩1,530 by Korean transit card; one free transfer within 90 min with a card · tapped foreign cards not confirmed. Cash is accepted on Sokcho buses, unlike Jeju. Use the bus for the fixed return from the terminus rather than the outbound run with 20-plus stops. Operators Gangwon Yeogaek 033-633-2277 and Donghae Sangsa 033-636-2162; the city’s timetable files are dated 29 November 2024. For today's exact departure times, open Google Maps transit directions from the pier — local timetables change by day, and the app knows today's.

How do you get from the Sokcho cruise port to Seoraksan Sogongwon by taxi, or the Foreign Tourist Taxi?

① Taxi from the rank at the terminal: 13.7 km, 21 min without traffic, about 26 min in practice — our estimates. Say “설악산 소공원 / 케이블카” ② Back from the Sogongwon taxi stand, or bus 7/7-1 from the terminus every ~20 min ③ Foreign Tourist Taxi: ₩30,000 for 3 h (+₩20,000 per extra hour), up to 4 passengers, passport required. Book at the Express Bus Terminal tourist desk (09:00–17:30, closed 12:00–13:00) or at gangwontaxi.com Fare: About ₩13,500–20,900 each way on the official tariff, distance only, our estimate. Tariff: ₩4,600 for 2 km, ₩100 per 131 m to 4 km, ₩200 per 131 m beyond · cable car ₩16,000 return · park entry free. Runs Taxi rank marked at the terminal; Seorak Call Taxi 033-639-1000, no call fee 04:00–22:00. Card acceptance in taxis is not confirmed; carry won. For a couple the Foreign Tourist Taxi is cheaper than three one-way taxis, but it departs from the bus terminals, not the cruise terminal. Sinheungsa’s heritage-zone fee is not confirmed: budget ₩0–3,500.

How do you get from the Sokcho cruise port to Abai Village and the Gaetbae ferry?

① On foot from the terminal: 582 m, 9 min (Sokcho City walking course A) ② The Gaetbae: a 32-passenger cable ferry that passengers pull across the 50 m channel with iron hooks, about 5 min ③ Over the water is the Tourist & Fishery Market side; the whole terminal-to-market walk is 1.3 km, 20 min (course B) Fare: Ferry ₩500 one way (child ₩300) at a ticket machine. The city’s map says it takes credit cards only; carry coins in case a foreign card is refused. Runs Ferry 05:00–23:00 May–Oct, 05:30–22:30 Nov–Apr, every day, weather permitting. The deck sits below the quay with a wide gap (the city’s note); not a step for everyone. The village lanes and mural street are flat and always open. Dancheon Sikdang in the village closes at 19:00 (secondary).

How many cruise ships visit Sokcho in 2026?

6 cruise calls are on the official Korean news quoting Sokcho City (Herald Economy, MTN) and cruise-line itineraries via CruiseDig, CruiseMapper and CruiseTimetables — neither the city nor the port office publishes a dated schedule schedule for 2026 (Calendar 2026 (ships named in Korean news and line itineraries; the city counts 7, the seventh unnamed)), 6 by international ships and 0 by Japanese-operated ships. Every ship and its season is listed at port-of-japan.com/cruises-to/sokcho/.

Where do cruise ships dock at Sokcho?

At the Sokcho Port International Cruise Terminal, 136-58 Seorakgeumgangdaegyo-ro, Cheongho-dong, run by the Donghae Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries. It stands on the spit at the mouth of Cheongcho Lake, beside Cheongho Beach; Abai Village is the same neighbourhood. Holland America’s port page says ships “dock at Daepo Harbor”. That is wrong: Daepo is a fishing harbour 4.9 km south. Berth length, depth and tonnage limit are not published; the largest caller on record is Costa Serena, 114,261 GT.

How do I get to Seoraksan from the ship?

The park gate at Sogongwon is 13.7 km. A taxi from the rank at the terminal takes about 26 minutes, our estimate, for roughly ₩13,500–20,900 each way on the official tariff. Say “설악산 소공원” or “케이블카”. City buses 7 and 7-1 run every 17–20 minutes to the Sogongwon terminus, ₩1,700 cash or ₩1,530 by transit card, but they do not pass the cruise terminal: the nearest stop is the Express Bus Terminal, 2.3 km away. A Foreign Tourist Taxi costs ₩30,000 for three hours for up to four people, booked at the Express Bus Terminal desk. The city’s free shuttle, when it runs, goes to the market, not the mountain.

Can I climb Ulsanbawi on a 10-hour call?

Only if you do nothing else. The Korea National Park Service gives 3.8 km and 2 hours each way from Sogongwon: 2.8 km of gentle path to Heundeulbawi, then a kilometre of steep stairs. With taxis that is about 5.5 hours door to door before any rest, on a day that gives you about 8 usable hours. Heundeulbawi alone (1 hour each way) or Biryong Falls (2.4 km, 1 hour each way, the first 1.2 km step-free) leave room for the cable car. On an 8-hour call Ulsanbawi is the wrong choice.

How do cable-car tickets work, and is there a senior fare?

Same-day sales only, at the 1F counter, with a boarding time printed on the ticket. No reservations. ₩16,000 return for anyone of middle-school age and over; one-way tickets are not sold and there is no trail down. All discounts, including the 65+ fare, are for Korean nationals with ID only, so foreign seniors pay ₩16,000. Full refund up to 10 minutes before your slot, or in full if the weather stops the car. Hours are posted daily on the operator’s homepage; secondary sources give 09:00–18:00. The last car of the day allows only about 20 minutes at the top.

Do I need cash? Do the buses take cards?

Sokcho buses take cash, ₩1,700, and Korean transit cards at ₩1,530; whether a tapped foreign card works is not confirmed. The Gaetbae is ₩500 at a ticket machine that the city’s map says takes credit cards only, while secondary guides say cash only; carry coins. Taxis and market stalls: card acceptance not confirmed, so bring won. The terminal lists a currency-exchange counter but no ATM. Korean “Global ATM” machines in convenience stores take foreign cards (secondary). A couple’s independent day is about ₩80,000–120,000 in cash-safe form, plus ₩32,000 for the cable car.

Do I need a K-ETA or an e-Arrival Card for a cruise stop in Sokcho?

Nationals of the countries currently exempt from K-ETA (including the USA, UK, Canada and Australia) do not need one through 31 December 2026. Under-18s and over-64s are always exempt. Every published Sokcho call after that date — Westerdam 17 April 2027, Mitsui Ocean Fuji 7 May 2027, Seabourn Encore 26 October 2027, Noordam 15 April 2028 — falls outside the exemption, and no extension had been announced by 8 October 2026. The e-Arrival Card applies to exempt-country nationals without a K-ETA, from three days before arrival. Cruise passengers land on a permit arranged by the ship; follow your line’s instructions.

The 17 April 2027 call is a Saturday. How busy will it be?

Busy at the cable car and the market, with domestic weekenders rather than other cruise passengers: Sokcho had 26 million visitors in 2025, 1.3% of them foreign. The operator’s FAQ says most weekends are busy; the Korea Tourism Organization says the wait after buying a ticket can pass an hour at weekends and in peak season. Buy the timed ticket first and walk to Sinheungsa while you wait. If the posted wait passes about 90 minutes, drop the ride and walk a trail instead. 17 April is outside the operator’s peak windows and no public holiday falls on it.

What is closed on a Monday? The 19 October 2026 Seabourn call is one.

The Sokcho City Museum, the Displaced Civilians Folk Village and the Seokbong Ceramic Museum close on Mondays, and the cruise lines’ “Introduction to Sokcho” tour skips its folk performance on Sundays and Mondays. The DMZ Museum at Goseong is closed on Mondays too. The cable car, Sinheungsa, the park trails, the Gaetbae, the market and Naksansa are open. Separately, the Bada Hyanggiro coastal walk has been closed for repairs since 1 December 2025, and the Cheoksan Foot Spa closes December to February.
