Things to do in Sokcho on a cruise port day

The one thing: Granite peaks above the pines, and a cable car to a fortress rock, 26 minutes from your gangway.

What Sokcho isSokcho is a fishing and resort town on Korea's north-east coast, about 50 km by road from the DMZ at Goseong and backed by the granite peaks of Seoraksan. Its cruise terminal stands on the Cheongho-dong spit, where refugees from the north settled during the Korean War and still serve squid sundae. Most of the 26 million people who visit each year are Korean weekenders; cruise passengers are a few thousand a year, and Saturday is the busy day.

Seoraksan: the cable car to Gwongeumseong

A cable car of about 1.2 km rises in five minutes to about 700 m, then a 20–30 minute walk over rock reaches the fortress site of Gwongeumseong.

From the ship Taxi from the terminal, 13.7 km and about 26 minutes, ₩13,500–20,900 each way on the meter.

The Tourist & Fishery Market and its chicken alley

About 450 shops, mostly under cover: fish in the basement, dried squid, and the alley of dakgangjeong shops that sells sweet-chilli fried chicken by the box.

From the ship 1.3 km and 20 minutes on foot from the terminal, including the Gaetbae crossing.

The stories behind them: Seoraksan · Abai Village · Naksansa · The Sokcho table · Why Sokcho is Sokcho →

Your call, your day

What fits the time your ship gives you?

Your hours, or your ship. The page picks your day and the one booking, with the hour before all-aboard set aside.

Why Sokcho is worth getting off the ship for

Ships come to Sokcho for a mountain. Seoraksan National Park begins 13.7 km from the berth: granite peaks to 1,708 m and a cable car to the fortress rock of Gwongeumseong. Below them are the Jogye temple of Sinheungsa and gorge paths to waterfalls. The ship's tours all go there.

The second reason is at the terminal door. Abai Village is the quarter that refugees from North Korea built on the spit in the 1950s. Its squid sundae, its mural lane and the Gaetbae, a ferry you haul across the channel yourself, are nine minutes on foot. The Tourist & Fishery Market is twenty.

What this port is not: a big-city call. Sokcho has about 80,000 people and no rail station yet. There is no official cruise schedule, no ATM listed at the terminal and no published shuttle timetable. No tour puts an on-time return in writing. The town's 26 million visitors a year are Korean weekenders, and Saturday is the crowded day.

This guide is built from Sokcho City's cruise pages and walking map, the bus timetable, the cable-car operator and the Korea National Park Service. The tours come from the lines' own pages. Everything was read on 8 October 2026.

One berth: the International Cruise Terminal at Cheongho-dong

There is nothing to choose. Every cruise ship uses the Sokcho Port International Cruise Terminal (속초항 국제크루즈터미널), 136-58 Seorakgeumgangdaegyo-ro, on the Cheongho-dong spit at the mouth of Cheongcho Lake. The Donghae Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries runs it. Cheongho Beach is beside it and the Geumgang bridge behind.

Holland America's port page says ships "dock at Daepo Harbor". By the city's own address that is wrong: Daepo is a fishing harbour 4.9 km south, a 10-minute taxi. Plan from Cheongho-dong.

The building has three floors. The arrivals hall holds 8 immigration desks, 3 customs X-ray lanes, a currency-exchange counter, a cafeteria and a nursing room. The departures hall adds a duty-free shop and a tax-refund counter. Nothing on the official list says ATM, Wi-Fi or information desk. On ship days the city has set up a tourist desk, foreign-language volunteers, a K-culture zone and a local-goods market inside.

Berth length, depth and the tonnage limit are not published. The largest ship on record is Costa Serena, 114,261 GT and about 290 m, which first called in 2018 and again on 12 May 2026. A taxi rank is marked on the city's terminal map; the call-taxi number is 033-639-1000.

Getting from the cruise terminal into Sokcho and to Seoraksan

The spit is flat, and the city's walking map starts at the terminal door. Everything beyond the market is a taxi or a bus.

Walking times are the city's own where its map covers the route. Road times are our estimates from map routing with a quarter added for traffic. Taxi fares are the distance-only floor of the official Sokcho tariff: ₩4,600 for the first 2 km, then ₩100 per 131 m to 4 km and ₩200 beyond.

Two taxi figures appear where the over-4-km rate could be read either way. Whether taxis take foreign cards is not published.

City buses cost ₩1,700 in cash or ₩1,530 by Korean transit card; whether a foreign contactless card can be tapped is not published. Routes 7 and 7-1 run from the Intercity Bus Terminal past the Express Bus Terminal to the Sogongwon car park, every 17–20 minutes, the last bus down at 20:35. The Express Bus Terminal stop is the nearest to the ship, 2.3 km away; the routes do not pass the terminal.

The Foreign Tourist Taxi is the city's own deal for passport holders: ₩30,000 for 3 hours, ₩20,000 per extra hour, up to 4 passengers, fees and meals extra. Book it on the spot at the Express Bus Terminal desk (033-639-2689, 09:00–17:30, closed 12:00–13:00) or online in advance. For a couple it undercuts three one-way taxis to the mountain and back.

Seoraksan from the ship: taxi out, timetable back

The sensible entry on a port day is Sogongwon (소공원), the Seorak-dong gate, where the cable car, Sinheungsa and the trailheads share one car park. Park entry is free; Korea abolished national-park fees in 2007. Sinheungsa's heritage-zone fee is not confirmed. The Jogye Order stopped charging at its heritage temples in May 2023, yet the cable-car site still prints an enquiry line for it. Budget ₩0–3,500.

Go out by taxi, about 26 minutes from the rank. Come back by the bus, because its departures from the Seoraksan terminus are published and the taxi stand is not. Route 7 leaves at 15:53, route 7-1 at 16:10, route 7 at 16:27, and so on every 17–20 minutes to 20:35. The ride to the Express Bus Terminal stop is 30–45 minutes on secondary accounts; the official timetable gives only the 50-minute end-to-end time.

Holland America's page calls Seoraksan "30 minutes by bus from the cruise terminal". No bus runs from the terminal; that is the coach on its own tours.

The Seorak cable car: tickets, queues and the walk to Gwongeumseong

The Seorak Cable Car (설악 케이블카) climbs about 1.2 km of track in five minutes to a station at about 700 m. From there a 20–30 minute walk over bare rock reaches Gwongeumseong, the fortress site, with outer Seorak and the sea in view. There is no trail down and no one-way ticket.

Tickets are ₩16,000 return, children ₩12,000, under 36 months free. There is no advance booking: you buy a timed ticket at the ground-floor counter on the day. It is refundable in full up to 10 minutes before the slot and less 20% after it; a weather cancellation refunds in full.

Every discount, including the 65+ fare of ₩14,000, is for Korean nationals with ID. The senior fare is also suspended in the peak windows, which in 2026 were 18 July–23 August and 19 September–15 November.

Hours are posted on the operator's homepage each day because they change with season and weather; secondary sources give 09:00–18:00, last boarding 17:30. Cars run every 10–15 minutes, every five when busy. The last car up allows about 20 minutes at the top.

The operator's own FAQ says most weekends are busy. The tourism organisation says a wait of more than an hour after buying is normal in peak season and at weekends. Holland America's tour text says to expect a delay and a long line. The answer is the order of the model day: ticket first, Sinheungsa while you wait, then the ride.

Sinheungsa (신흥사), the Jogye head temple of the district, and its 14.6 m bronze Unification Buddha stand 5–10 minutes inside the gate on the flat. The cable car is wheelchair-accessible by lift to the boarding deck; prams are not allowed on board and are stored free. Use the Sogongwon toilets first.

Trails from Sogongwon: Biryong, Heundeulbawi and Ulsanbawi

Biryong Falls at the end of the gorge path from Sogongwon
Biryong Falls at the end of the gorge path from SogongwonPhoto: Jhkangphoto / CC BY-SA 4.0

All distances and times are the park service's own, one way from the Sogongwon gate.

TrailDistanceTime one wayCharacter
Biryong Falls2.4 km1 hFirst 1.2 km step-free, then steel decks in the gorge; +0.4 km and 30 min of stairs to the Towangseong Falls viewpoint
Heundeulbawi (rocking rock)2.8 km1 hGentle; the park says no great difficulty for children or older walkers
Ulsanbawi3.8 km2 hHeundeulbawi, then 1.0 km of steep stairs; 10-hour calls only
Geumganggul cave3.6 km2 h3.0 km gentle to Biseondae, then 0.6 km of steep stairs

Biryong Falls is the pairing for the cable car on a 10-hour call: a gorge walk with a waterfall at the end, and the step-free first half is a fair turn-back point. Heundeulbawi is the gentler alternative, and the Seabourn hiking tour's destination. The park closes the high trails above Biseondae in the fire-prevention and thaw seasons; the city's "Seorak-dong closed 15 November to 15 December" note is that closure, not the park gate.

Ulsanbawi is the view on every Seoraksan poster, and reaching it is two hours up and two down. It fits a 10-hour call and nothing else fits with it; the third model day is built for it. The park rates the colour best from mid-October to early November.

Near the gate, Seorak Hyanggiro is a lit 2.7 km loop with a 1 km cherry tunnel, a skywalk and a 98 m suspension bridge. It is free and open 06:00–22:00 from March to October.

Abai Village, the Gaetbae and the market on foot

The Gaetbae (갯배) is a 32-passenger cable ferry across the 50 m channel between the spit and the town. Passengers pull it with iron hooks on a cable; the crossing takes five minutes. It runs 05:30–22:30 from November to April and 05:00–23:00 from May to October, every day, weather permitting, and residents ride free.

The fare is ₩500 one way, ₩300 for primary-school children. How you pay is disputed: the city's cruise walking map says credit card only at the ticket machine, while secondary guides say cash only. Carry ₩500 coins in case the machine refuses a foreign card. There is a step down onto the deck, and the city warns of a wide gap.

Abai Village (아바이마을) is 582 m from the terminal. The mural lane on Cheongho-ro is open all hours; the sundae kitchens open from about 08:30 on secondary listings. Dancheon Sikdang, Sindasin, Narutbae Sikdang and Bukcheong Jeontong are the named places, and only Dancheon's hours were found.

The Tourist & Fishery Market (속초관광수산시장, the old Jungang Market) has about 450 shops and is mostly under cover. Fish and the sashimi centre are in the basement; the chicken alley sells dakgangjeong by the box. Hours are not confirmed: secondary listings give 08:00–24:00 for the market and about 10:00–20:00 for the food alley. The market joined the national K-Tourism Market programme in March 2026 with cruise-linked events, and a tourist desk inside opens 09:00–18:00.

Naksansa, Daepo Port and the DMZ by taxi or tour

Naksansa (낙산사) is the seaside temple of 671 in Yangyang, rebuilt after the fire of 2005, with the Uisangdae pavilion on its cliff and the 16 m Haesugwaneum statue. It is 11.8 km and about 24 minutes by taxi, ₩12,100–18,000 each way. Its hours and fee are not confirmed: secondary sources give 06:00–18:30 or 06:00–20:30 and either free entry or ₩3,000. Return taxis at the gate are not confirmed, so ask yours to wait. Allow 2.5 hours door to door.

Daepo Port, the round fishing harbour 4.9 km south of the terminal
Daepo Port, the round fishing harbour 4.9 km south of the terminalPhoto: Bernard Gagnon / CC0 1.0

Daepo Port (대포항) is the harbour the cruise line confuses with the berth: a round basin with a fish centre and dozens of raw-fish restaurants, always open, free, and a 15–20 minute path to a viewpoint over the harbour and Ulsanbawi. By taxi it is about 10 minutes. It pairs with Naksansa for a 4-hour afternoon on the Holland America pattern.

Goseong Unification Observatory is about 51 km north, 70 minutes each way by road, and the taxi floor is ₩42,000–78,000 each way. Entry goes through the Unification Security Park registration office with a passport and a security briefing, and you do not enter the DMZ itself. The DMZ Museum beside it closes on Mondays. Independently this is a full day; the tours below do it in seven hours.

Not realistic on a port day: Daecheongbong, the 1,708 m summit; Gangneung, 68 km and 80 minutes each way, except on the 7-hour coach tours; Seoul, 2.5 hours by express bus.

The best things to do in Sokcho on a port day

Our full list, with the time each takes from the berth, is on the Sokcho top 10. In brief:

  1. Seorak Cable Car and Gwongeumseong: five minutes up, a 20–30 minute walk, ₩16,000; 2.5–3 hours from the ship.
  2. Abai Village and the Gaetbae ferry: nine minutes on foot; pull the ferry yourself for ₩500.
  3. Sinheungsa and the Unification Buddha: the temple for the cable-car wait, on the flat.
  4. Ojingeo sundae lunch in Abai Village: the refugees' stuffed squid, at Dancheon Sikdang.
  5. Biryong Falls or the Heundeulbawi walk: an hour each way from the gate; the 10-hour call's second half.
  6. The Tourist & Fishery Market and dakgangjeong: 450 shops under cover; the rain plan.
  7. Naksansa: the cliff temple in Yangyang, 24 minutes by taxi; hours not confirmed.
  8. Ulsanbawi: four hours of walking; 10-hour calls and hikers only.
  9. Mulhoe at the Daepo Port stalls: iced raw-fish soup in the harbour the line thinks you dock at.
  10. The best-reviewed DMZ day: the Goseong observatory, lunch and Wanggok village, with your passport.

One day in Sokcho: model days

Cable car, Sinheungsa, a trail and an Abai sundae dinner: the 10:00–20:00 Saturday

Fits Westerdam on Saturday 17 April 2027 and Saturday 17 October 2026, and Noordam on Saturday 15 April 2028, all 10:00–20:00 as the lines publish them. The Seabourn Encore calls of 08:00–18:00 and 09:00–19:00 take the same route one to two hours earlier.

The mountain first, by taxi, with the fixed bus timetable as the way down; then the market, the ferry and the village at the end. Times assume 10:00–20:00, so all-aboard about 19:30 and our target back at the gangway 18:30. Saturday is the cable car's busy day, so the timed ticket comes before everything.

  1. 10:30Off the ship. Taxi from the rank to Seoraksan Sogongwon (설악산 소공원, 케이블카): 13.7 km, about 26 minutes, ₩13,500–20,900 on the meter.
  2. 11:00Buy cable-car tickets at the ground-floor counter, ₩16,000 return each, with a printed boarding time. On a Saturday expect a wait; in peak weeks it can pass an hour.
  3. 11:10While you wait: Sinheungsa (신흥사) and the 14.6 m Unification Buddha, 5–10 minutes inside the gate on the flat. Use the Sogongwon toilets now; the top has only foam toilets.
  4. 12:00Cable car up, five minutes, then the 20–30 minute walk over rock to Gwongeumseong (권금성) and back. Cars run every 10–15 minutes, every five when busy.
  5. 13:00Lunch at the Sogongwon restaurant row below the gate, or a snack at the top station. Restaurant names and hours are not published, so take what is open.
  6. 13:40Biryong Falls (비룡폭포): 2.4 km and an hour each way, the first 1.2 km step-free, then gorge decks. Gentler knees: Heundeulbawi (흔들바위), 2.8 km and an hour each way, rated easy by the park.
  7. 15:53Bus 7 down from the Seoraksan terminus at 15:53, or 7-1 at 16:10, or 7 at 16:27, to the Express Bus Terminal stop: ₩1,700 cash, 30–45 minutes. Or a taxi from the stand, about 26 minutes.
  8. 16:45Taxi or walk from the Express Bus Terminal to the Tourist & Fishery Market (속초관광수산시장): dakgangjeong at Mansuk, dried fish, the basement fish floor. Market hours are not confirmed.
  9. 17:30Gaetbae ferry (갯배) across to Abai Village, ₩500, five minutes. Dinner at Dancheon Sikdang (단천식당): ojingeo sundae or Abai sundae, ordered by 18:15 for its 18:30 last order.
  10. 18:20Walk the 582 m, nine minutes, to the terminal. At the gangway by 18:30, on target, with an hour before all-aboard.

On foot from the terminal: Abai Village, the Gaetbae, the market and Cheongcho Lake

Fits any call of 6 hours or more, and any rainy day. Written for Seabourn Encore's 08:00–18:00 Monday call on 19 October 2026, when the City Museum is closed; on the 10:00–20:00 calls shift everything two hours later.

No taxi and no mountain: about 2.5 hours of walking on the city's own eight-course map, with the ferry as the only ride. Times assume 08:00–18:00, all-aboard about 17:30, target gangway 16:30. The Expo Tower opens at 09:00 and runs to 22:00, so it comes in the afternoon.

  1. 08:45Off the ship. Walking course A to Abai Village (아바이마을), 582 m and nine minutes: the mural lane on Cheongho-ro, open all hours, and the fish centre by the water.
  2. 09:15Gaetbae across the channel, ₩500 at the ticket machine, then the 10 minutes on to the Tourist & Fishery Market (course B, 20 minutes in all from the ship).
  3. 09:30The market: the basement fish floor, dried squid, and dakgangjeong at Mansuk from 10:00 (secondary hours). The tourist desk inside the market opens at 09:00 if you want a map.
  4. 11:30Back across on the Gaetbae. Early lunch at Dancheon Sikdang in the village: ojingeo sundae, a plate for two, open from 08:30.
  5. 12:45Walking course G along the lake to the Expo Tower (속초엑스포타워), 3.0 km and 41 minutes on the city's map, on the flat.
  6. 13:30Expo Tower, 73.4 m, 09:00–22:00; the fee is not confirmed, about ₩2,500 on a secondary listing. The lakeside park around it is free and always open.
  7. 14:30Walk back the 41 minutes to the terminal, or take a taxi for about ₩5,000 if the legs have had enough.
  8. 15:15Cheongho Beach, the small beach beside the terminal, for the last half hour; the city's page says the cruise terminal is right next door.
  9. 15:45At the gangway, 45 minutes ahead of target.

Ulsanbawi: the four-hour walk, for hikers only, on a 10-hour call

Fits the 10:00–20:00 Westerdam and Noordam calls and the 09:00–19:00 Seabourn Encore call on 26 October 2027 for walkers who climb stairs for an hour without stopping. It is the wrong choice for most passengers; the cable-car day above shows the same peaks.

Sogongwon to Ulsanbawi is 3.8 km and two hours each way on the park's own guide, the last kilometre on steep stairs. That is four hours of walking plus transfers, so nothing else fits. Times assume 10:00–20:00, target gangway 18:30.

  1. 10:30Off the ship. Taxi to Sogongwon, about 26 minutes and ₩13,500–20,900. Water and a layer: the ridge is several degrees colder than the coast.
  2. 11:00Through the park gate, no fee, past Sinheungsa on the flat. Check the posted trail notices: the park closes high trails in the fire-prevention and thaw seasons.
  3. 12:00Heundeulbawi (흔들바위), the rocking rock, 2.8 km and an hour from the gate on a gentle path; Gyejoam hermitage is beside it.
  4. 13:00Ulsanbawi (울산바위), 1.0 km and an hour of stairs from the rock, to the top with Sokcho and the sea below. Thirty minutes at the top.
  5. 13:30Down, two hours on the park's guide, stairs first. Do not shorten the rests; this is where tired knees go wrong.
  6. 15:45Back at Sogongwon. A late lunch at the restaurant row below the gate, names and hours not published.
  7. 16:27Bus 7 down from the Seoraksan terminus at 16:27, or 7-1 at 16:44, ₩1,700 cash; or a taxi from the stand, about 26 minutes.
  8. 17:15Taxi from the Express Bus Terminal to the terminal, about 5 minutes and ₩4,800. Say 국제크루즈터미널, the international cruise terminal.
  9. 17:30At the gangway, an hour ahead of target. The spare hour is the margin for a slow descent, not for adding the cable car.

How to think about your hours

Work backwards from the ship. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure (check the daily programme), and you want to be at the gangway an hour before that. The first half hour after arrival goes on clearance through the eight immigration desks and the walk off. So the time you can use is the call length minus about two hours.

CallUsableWhat fits from the Cheongho-dong terminal
4 hoursabout 2Abai Village, the Gaetbae and the market on foot. Or the foot spa by taxi. Not Seoraksan.
6 hoursabout 4The cable car alone, 2.5–3 hours door to door with a modest queue, plus Abai on the way back. Or Naksansa and a Daepo lunch by taxi.
8 hoursabout 6Cable car, Sinheungsa and Heundeulbawi, then the market or Abai. Not Ulsanbawi.
10 hoursabout 8The first model day: cable car, temple, Biryong Falls, market, ferry, sundae dinner. Or Ulsanbawi and nothing else.
13 hoursabout 11The first model day plus Naksansa by taxi in the afternoon; the market after dark.

Every published Western call is 10 hours except Seabourn Encore's 13-hour Sunday on 25 October 2026. The two Saturdays, 17 October 2026 and 17 April 2027, are Westerdam's 10:00–20:00 pattern between Fukuoka and Kanazawa. Mitsui Ocean Fuji calls on 7 May 2027 with no times published. Neither the city nor the port office publishes a schedule; the list on cruises to Sokcho comes from the lines' itineraries.

Tours worth booking, by how many hours you have

One pick per length of call. Every card opens our own page first: what the operator includes, who should skip it, and which upcoming Sokcho calls it fits. Prices are the operator's "from" price as of 26 Sep 2026.

9h+The DMZ day for the 10-hour calls: observatory, lunch and a 400-year-old village

Seven hours plus the usual margin is 8.5–9 hours, so these fit every published 10-hour call. Agree the pickup time against your arrival in writing, especially on the 08:00 Seabourn days. Carry your passport: entry to the observatory area goes through the port's security registration.

Tours are booked through Viator (a Tripadvisor company). If you book, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend — which is why each tour page has a "think twice" note.

About the return to the ship. The catalogue for this port has nine listings, and not one of their records puts an on-time return in writing. The shared DMZ day (397011P2) comes closest: its description says you can visit the DMZ "while disembarking at the Sokcho cruise terminal", which is a pickup, not a promise. The private DMZ day (397011P1) starts at the Express Bus Terminal unless you agree a terminal pickup. The Seoraksan-and-DMZ car (5575066P3) lists hotel pickups and says it is also available for cruise tourists.

Both DMZ days are seven hours, 8.5–9 with the usual margin, so they fit every published 10-hour call. On the 08:00 Seabourn days agree the pickup time against your arrival in writing. Every observatory visit goes through the security registration that asks for your passport, which none of the records mentions.

Off the catalogue, the Shore Excursions Group sells a 9-hour private day from the pier for 1 to 30 people. Its header carries a "Guaranteed Return to Ship" label, with no terms shown anywhere on the page. It includes a Gangneung market that is an hour-plus each way, so on a 10-hour call it leaves no margin. Book it only with the return time in writing and Gangneung dropped.

Whatever you book, tell the guide your all-aboard time at the start and agree the gangway an hour before it.

The ship's excursions: Holland America and Seabourn at Sokcho

Holland America's Sokcho pages (port code KSH) listed these seven on 8 October 2026. Prices are "from", per person, in US dollars; Seabourn sells the same operator's tours at higher prices, listed after.

Money, cards and the practical stuff

Carry won. Cash is confirmed on the buses and expected at the market stalls; card acceptance is published almost nowhere.

PlacePay with
City buses 7 and 7-1Cash ₩1,700 or a Korean transit card ₩1,530; foreign contactless not confirmed
Gaetbae ferryTicket machine: the city says credit card only, secondary guides say cash only; carry coins
Cable carCounter sales; card acceptance not stated
Taxis, Foreign Tourist TaxiCash safest; foreign cards not published
Market stalls, Abai kitchensCash safest; per stall
City Museum, Expo TowerCash safest; not published

The terminal lists a currency-exchange counter and no ATM; whether the counter opens on every call is not confirmed. Korean Global ATMs in banks and convenience stores take foreign cards for a fee of roughly ₩3,000–6,000, but none near the terminal is confirmed. The previous port on the Westerdam loop is Fukuoka, whose machines dispense yen, not won. Change money on board or at the terminal counter, and do not count on the counter.

Entry. Sokcho is Korea, not Japan. Nationals of K-ETA-exempt countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, need no K-ETA until 31 December 2026 and file the free e-Arrival Card instead. Nothing had been announced for 2027 when we checked on 8 October 2026, so the 2027 calls may need one for passengers aged 18–64. Over-64s are always exempt. Follow your line's landing instructions.

Closed days against the call dates. The City Museum and the Seokbong Ceramic Museum close on Mondays, which catches Seabourn Encore on 19 October 2026 and cancels the Introduction tour's performance. The DMZ Museum also closes Mondays. Cheoksan Foot Spa closes December to February, outside every listed call. The Bada Hyanggiro coastal walk south of Sokcho Beach has been closed for repairs since 1 December 2025. Saturday 17 April 2027 is not a Korean public holiday.

Food on the route. The city's list of signature foods starts with Abai sundae and ojingeo sundae, then hoe and mulhoe from the fish centres, dakgangjeong, Hamheung naengmyeon, sundubu from the tofu villages and red snow crab in autumn. The three places on the model days, Dancheon Sikdang, Mansuk Dakgangjeong and the Daepo stalls, have hours from secondary listings only.

When to go: seasons and crowds

  • Mid-April (Westerdam 17 April 2027, Noordam 15 April 2028): highs of 16.5 °C and mornings of 7 °C, 73 mm of rain over about 9 wet days, so one day in three. Gwongeumseong at about 700 m runs several degrees colder; bring a layer. The Yeongnangho cherry festival was 11–12 April in 2026, so 17 April may be at or just past peak.
  • Mid-October (17, 19 and 25 October 2026; 26 October 2027): highs of 19.5 °C, 88 mm and 7 wet days, the driest tourist month. It is also foliage season: the 2026 forecast put Seoraksan's peak at 20 October, the cable car's peak rule removes the senior fare, and queues of an hour or more are normal.
  • Early May (Mitsui Ocean Fuji, 7 May 2027): about 21 °C, 89 mm. Korea's Children's Day is 5 May; the call itself is a Friday.
  • Typhoons affecting Korea average 3.4 a year, almost all from July to September; October's normal is 0.1 and April's zero. The cable car stops in strong wind and refunds in full.
  • Yellow dust in spring can haze the view from Gwongeumseong; the east coast behind the mountains usually sees fewer days than Seoul, but Sokcho's own figures were not captured.
  • Rain plan: the covered market, the City Museum except Mondays, the Expo Tower, the terminal's own K-culture zone on ship days. The gorge decks to Biryong are fine in light rain; the cable car in cloud is not.

Mistakes we see passengers make

  1. Planning for Daepo Harbor because the cruise line's page says so. The ship is 4.9 km north at the Cheongho-dong terminal, nine minutes from Abai Village. Daepo is a taxi of about ₩7,000.
  2. Waiting for a port shuttle to Seoraksan. The city's free shuttle, when it runs, goes to the market. The mountain is a taxi, the Foreign Tourist Taxi or bus 7 from the Express Bus Terminal.
  3. Taking the cable-car queue lightly on a Saturday or in foliage season. Buy the timed ticket first, then walk to Sinheungsa. If the posted wait passes 90 minutes, refund it and walk to Biryong Falls instead.
  4. Attempting Ulsanbawi on an 8-hour call. Four hours of walking plus transfers leaves no margin. On 8 hours do the cable car and Heundeulbawi; Ulsanbawi is for the 10-hour calls.
  5. Expecting the 65+ cable-car fare. It is for Korean ID holders only and suspended in peak windows. Foreign seniors pay ₩16,000.
  6. Arriving without won or coins. No ATM is listed at the terminal, buses take cash, and the Gaetbae machine's card rule is disputed. Bring won and ₩500 coins from your last Korean port, or change money on board.
  7. Telling the driver 'the ferry terminal' on the way back. Sokcho has an older coastal passenger terminal. Say 국제크루즈터미널, the international cruise terminal, or show the address 설악금강대교로 136-58.

Researched from official timetables, operators and the port authority. Every time and fare in this guide was checked against the sources listed above on 9 October 2026; where we had to estimate (a walk, a taxi in traffic), the text says so. Timetables change — if you find one that has, tell us and we will fix it.
