The Jogye Order head temple just inside Seoraksan’s Sogongwon gate, rebuilt on this site in 1648. Its gilt-bronze Unification Buddha is 14.6 m tall on a 4.3 m pedestal, paid for by more than 300,000 small donations. Park entry is free; the temple’s former heritage-zone fee is not confirmed, so budget ₩0–3,500. The natural place to wait for a cable-car slot.
- Our number 3 for Sokcho, out of ten. It is the first thing we would spend the hours on.
- Short enough to be certain of: 1 hr 40 min door to door, so even a tender day works.
- No single published ride covers this one. Budget for a taxi both ways, or fold it into a guided day.
Why Sinheungsa and the Unification Buddha is famous
Sinheungsa stands just inside the Sogongwon gate of Seoraksan. Accounts of its founding vary: by the monk Jajang in 637 or 653, when it was called Hyangseongsa. It burned in 699 and again in 1645, and was rebuilt on the present site in 1648. It is a head temple of the Jogye Order. The gilt-bronze Unification Buddha in front of it is 14.6 m tall and weighs 108 tonnes, on a 4.3 m pedestal: 18.9 m in all. It was paid for over more than a decade by some 300,000 small donations, and holds three relics of the Buddha given by Myanmar. Korean national-park entry fees were abolished in 2007, and 65 Jogye temples with state-designated heritage stopped charging in May 2023. Whether Sinheungsa still asks for a heritage-zone fee is not confirmed.
Sinheungsa and the Unification Buddha and your ship
Both pins on one map, so the distance is a fact rather than a feeling.
Where the 1 hr 40 min goes
Counted from the moment you step off the gangway. The hour before all-aboard is not in this bar; it is already set aside.
26 minutes each way is the measured figure for taxi ~26 min each way; then 5–10 min on foot from the park gate, flat, not the optimistic one. If your ship is late, cut the 48 min in the middle. Never cut the hour at the end.
Routes that already include it
Each one is a finished day we have walked and timed, with this stop in it. Read the route rather than assembling it yourself.
What to put beside it
Each of these still lands you back aboard with the hour to spare.
