Fish shops, a butcher, greengrocers, souvenir stalls and sushi counters sit under one roof on the river mouth, and it is a place locals use as well as visitors.
The easy way to use it is to eat here rather than shop. The complex has a conveyor sushi counter serving local fish, seafood-bowl restaurants and, in season, raw rock oysters eaten on the spot (the tourism page features them). The tourism board places it close to Bandai Bridge, Toki Messe and Niigata Station, so it slots into a short city walk.
The catch is the berth. From the East Port, where the big ships dock, there is no public transport and the quay is closed to the public, so this only works with a ship shuttle that goes to the city or a pricey taxi. From the West Port it is a simple bus and walk. Counters are busiest at midday.
Five things the plaques won't tell you
- Allow about 15 minutes on foot from the Bandai exit of Niigata Station; the Toki Messe convention centre is a 10-minute walk from the market.
- Shops set their own hours inside the 9:00–21:00 envelope, so go for lunch rather than a late visit.
- The tourism board also lists a barbecue area at the market; ask on arrival whether it is running on your day.
- Look for the seasonal oysters: the tourism page highlights raw rock oysters eaten on the spot.
- Bandai Bridge is close by, so a short walk covers both the market and the city's emblem.
