From the berth
From West Port (Yamanoshita): about 1 h to 1 h 15 min with a taxi, and ¥260 plus the onward leg — city bus to Niigata Station (15–20 min), then taxi about 25 min or a Niigata Kotsu bus (about 27 min, ¥599). From East Port: shuttle or taxi to the station first
¥260 is Niigata Kotsu's flat city fare (revised September 2023), confirmed for the Suehirobashi–Niigata Station E10 ride on the operator-fed planner (18 min, October 2026); the taxi time is the museum's own access page (25 min from Niigata Station); the bus (¥599, 27 min on board) is from a Yahoo route search for 13 Oct 11:08, with the return at 12:50, 13:57 and 16:04 that day. The bus runs few times a day. The 15.3 km station-to-museum road distance is OSRM routing; at the December 2025 Niigata tariff band a taxi comes to roughly ¥5,000–6,000, which is our estimate, not a quoted fare.
Time inside
About 1 h
The museum's own guide; a free staff-led tour of about 15 minutes is offered, with priority to booked groups.
Hours
9:00–17:00 (to 16:30 Dec–Mar); open every day in Apr, May, Oct and Nov; otherwise closed Tuesdays (the next day if Tuesday is a holiday) and 1–2 Jan
The museum advises arriving at least 30 minutes before closing. In October 2026 the kitchen is in use for an event on the 8th and the kitchen and great hall on the 19th and 29th.
Cost
¥800 adults; ¥700 for ages 70 and over (with proof of age); ¥400 for children (free on Sundays and holidays)
Prices change on 1 April 2027 (the new rates are in an image on the museum's notice that we could not read). There is no restaurant nearby: the miso-gura restaurant is suspended, a soba shop opens only on weekends and holidays (11:00–15:00 in October) and a cafe runs 9:30–16:00.
Why it's worth your hours

This is what a great landowner's estate looks like. The museum bills itself as a 'great farmer's mansion' (a goho no yakata), with its buildings, gardens and exhibits spread out far enough that the museum puts a visit at about an hour.

What you do is walk the great hall, look into the kitchen and wander the garden. The museum offers a short staff-led guide, and its notices list a seasonal programme of events and exhibits. Part of the great hall's earth wall is under repair this autumn, so some rooms may be less than perfect.

The catch is the journey and the lunch. It is a taxi-length trip out of town on a sparse bus line, so it needs a proper day, and food is limited. Eat in the city first, or you may be left with a drinks-only cafe if the soba shop is closed on a weekday.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Take a taxi from Niigata Station and ask the driver to wait or agree a return pick-up; the regional bus is sparse and the return buses on 13 Oct in the route planner are 12:50, 13:57 and 16:04.
  2. Ask at the desk for the staff-led walk-through of about 15 minutes; it is free and given on request, with booked groups first.
  3. Bring lunch plans: in October the soba shop is open on weekends and holidays only, and the cafe serves from 9:30 to 16:00.
  4. Open every day in October and November; in other months check the Tuesday closure.
  5. Look at the museum's notice board when you arrive for events that close a room that day.

Quick answers

Questions people ask here

Is the museum open on Tuesdays?

It is closed on Tuesdays, except in April, May, October and November, when it opens every day. If Tuesday is a public holiday it opens and closes the next day instead.

How much is the entry now?

¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children; people aged 70 and over pay the ¥700 group rate with proof of age. Prices change on 1 April 2027.

Can I get there by bus?

Yes: a Niigata Kotsu bus from Bandai City bus centre stops at Kami-Sawami Hakubutsukan-mae, a 2-minute walk away. It runs only a few times a day, so a taxi is the safer choice for a ship's deadline.
