Our winter overview gives the general rule: winter itineraries go south. This page puts the 2026–27 season’s real calls against it, port by port, with what the weather, the clock and the New Year holiday do to each one.
Where the ships are
Counts are from the ports’ own lists in our cruise calendar. Some lists do not reach February yet: Yokohama adds January to March in early December, and Kobe, Sakaiminato and Sasebo stop at the end of December. Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Osaka and Shimizu have not published December at all. The 2027 entries on the Okinawa lists are berth bookings filed by agents, and not all of them may turn into calls.

Temperatures and snow days: JMA 1991–2020 normals for the city's station ("snow days" are days on which any snow or sleet fell, summed for the three months). Sunsets: National Astronomical Observatory of Japan tables for 2026–27; * computed by us for the port's coordinates with the NOAA solar formula, which matches NAOJ's Naha table to the minute. Calls: port lists as held in our calendar.
No call is listed at Hakodate, Aomori or Otaru from December to February. Hakodate’s list runs to March 2027: after MSC Bellissima on 5 November, the next call is Vasco da Gama on 7 March. The snow-and-lights north stays a land trip this winter.
The short days are the real constraint
In December the sun sets between 16:17 (Sendai) and 17:24 (Nagasaki, on the 31st) at every mainland port in the table, and before 17:00 all month from Tokyo to Kobe. On a ship that sails at 18:00 or later, the last hour or more ashore between Tokyo and Kobe is in the dark, and the gardens close earlier still: the Imperial Palace East Gardens at 16:00 from November to February, Kochi Castle at 17:00, and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum at 17:30. Plan the outdoor part first and keep the indoor or after-dark part for the end.
Some calls are built for the dark. Star Navigator at Kochi on 2 December arrives at 11:00 and stays to 20:00, so Kochi Castle has to come first, before 17:00. Spectrum of the Seas at Nagasaki on 24 December stays to 19:00, and Glover Garden is open to 20:00 through December. Mt Inasa’s ropeway runs 9:00–22:00 all year, though the operator says bad weather can stop it.
The rule still applies: be back aboard an hour before departure, and count that hour when you work out how much daylight the call has.
The New Year calls
Japan’s holiday runs roughly 29 December to 3 January, and closures follow each venue’s own calendar. The calls in that week:
- Nagasaki, 1 January. Dream is in from 12:00 to 22:00. The Atomic Bomb Museum closes only 29–31 December, so it is open on New Year’s Day, 8:30–17:30. Glover Garden is open too, 8:00–18:00. Sunset is 17:25.
- Naha, 29, 30 and 31 December, 2, 3 and 4 January. The Makishi Public Market is open every day in December but closed 1–3 January, which matters for the 2 and 3 January calls. MSC Bellissima is in on 30 December and 3 January.
- Ishigaki, 29, 30 and 31 December; Miyakojima, 29 and 31 December and 2 January. The Yaeyama Museum and the Miyakojima City Museum both close 29 December to 3 January. Ishigaki’s town market also closes on 27 December, a fourth Sunday, when MSC Bellissima is in.
- Tokyo, 3–4 January. Mitsui Ocean Fuji arrives at 19:00 on the 3rd and leaves at 16:00 on the 4th. The East Gardens are closed 28 December to 3 January, and also every Monday and Friday: 4 January is a Monday, and so is 1 February, Mitsui Ocean Fuji’s next Tokyo call.
Okinawa: cherry blossom and the bulk of the season
Okinawa’s cherry is hikan-zakura, a deep-pink species that opens two months before the mainland’s. By the JMA normals it first blooms on 16 January in Naha, 17 January on Miyakojima and 18 January on Ishigaki, and reaches full bloom on 4, 9 and 10 February. From those first-bloom dates to the end of February the lists hold 47 Naha calls on 32 different days, 15 at Miyakojima and 12 at Ishigaki. The whale-watching boats from Naha run from early January to the end of March.
January in Naha averages 17.3°C, so the day ashore is not a beach day but every plan works. The ships doing most of it are Star Navigator, MSC Bellissima, Adora Mediterranea and Spectrum of the Seas. Westerdam (24 February), Regatta (11 February) and Sapphire Princess (16 December and 27 January) add one or two each.
Nagasaki in February
Nagasaki has nine February calls, more than any month this winter, and six fall during the Lantern Festival (5–21 February 2027): Dream on 7, 12 and 17 February (14:00–22:00), Spectrum of the Seas on 11 February (07:00–19:00), Costa Deliziosa on 18 February and Navigator of the Seas on 21 February (07:00–19:00). The festival is in Shinchi Chinatown and Minato Park, beside the Matsugae berth. February’s mean is 8.1°C and sunset on the 15th is 18:06.
The mainland, port by port
Tokyo. Ten calls in January and February: MSC Bellissima on 17 January (05:30–19:00), Sapphire Princess on 23 January (05:30–16:00), Costa Deliziosa overnight from 13 February, Navigator of the Seas on 25 February, Seabourn Encore on 27 February and Westerdam on 28 February, plus Japanese ships. January and February carry the year’s best odds for seeing Mt Fuji.
Kochi. Seven calls, from Star Navigator on 2 December to Seabourn Encore on 22 February. Kochi gets 190.7 hours of sunshine in January by the normal, close to Tokyo’s 192.6 and nearly double Nagasaki’s 103.7.
Hiroshima. Five December calls and none in January or February, on a list that runs to March. Norwegian Jade on 4 December is the only non-Japanese-line ship among them. Hiroshima has 12 snow days in January by the normal, the most of any port in the table with January figures, Sendai aside.
Kobe and Yokohama. December only so far, and apart from Star Navigator at Kobe on 1 December all Japanese ships: Asuka II, Asuka III, Mitsui Ocean Fuji and Sakura, and Pacific World. At Kobe, the Nunobiki Herb Gardens say their ropeway may stop for wind or thunder. Kobe Luminarie runs 29 January to 7 February 2027, after Kobe’s list currently ends.
Nagoya and Toba. Mostly Mitsui Ocean Sakura turnarounds, with Navigator of the Seas at Nagoya on 26 February and Seabourn Encore at Toba on 25 February, 10:00–19:00.
Sendai-Shiogama, 1 December. Mitsui Ocean Sakura, 07:00–15:00, is the only call north of Tokyo all winter. Sendai’s December averages 4.5°C with 17.6 snow days, and sunset is 16:17.
The honest verdict
A winter cruise to Japan in 2026–27 is, by the numbers, an Okinawa cruise with mainland stops: 159 of the 248 listed calls are in Okinawa, and the north has none. The mainland calls that are there are cold rather than snowy at the coast, short of daylight, and busier with Japanese ships than international ones. Plan each one around sunset, check the New Year week venue by venue, and treat February in Nagasaki and late January in Naha as the two windows with something only winter has.
