The reef here is genuinely good and the operators are licensed and used to nervous first-timers. If you have ever wanted to try it in warm, clear, shallow water with someone holding the rope, this is the port for it.
The Yaeyamas sit inside one of the largest coral reef systems in Japan, including the Sekisei Lagoon. Guided snorkelling is the norm because currents here are strong and the reef is protected. What you get is scale: manta rays pass these waters seasonally and the fish counts are not mainland numbers.
