When ash drifts or rain falls, the roofs make it the city’s all-weather room.

Five things the plaques won't tell you
- A regular shirokuma at Mujaki genuinely serves two — order accordingly, or ask for the baby size.
- Agetateya fries satsuma-age to order; eat one warm walking, box six for the cabin.
- Akashiya’s main shop (1854) does the definitive karukan — the plain steamed original, not just the filled ones.
- Shochu shops arrange tastings of the sweet-potato spirit; miniatures fly home safely.
- The Museum of the Meiji Restoration (¥600) is about a 15-minute walk if the history bug bites — but it is closed for renovation from 24 November 2026 to 22 January 2027.

What is shirokuma and where is the original?
A shaved-ice “polar bear”: condensed milk, fruit arranged into a face, first sold at Tenmonkan Mujaki in 1949. The original parlor still serves it in the arcades — expect a fast-moving queue, and know that one regular size feeds two.
Is Tenmonkan enough for a short Kagoshima call?
Yes — it is the honest 2–3 hour answer: about half an hour from Marine Port by shuttle, everything under cover, the city’s food icons within three blocks, and the shuttle straight back.
