Town (Tenmonkan): ① Ship shuttle to the Tenmonkan area — standard on cruise calls; drop point varies by call

Sakurajima volcano: ① From Tenmonkan: tram Line 2 to Suizokukan-guchi, then ~5 min walk to the ferry terminal ② Sakurajima Ferry — pay ¥250 on the Sakurajima side Fare Tram ¥200 + ferry ¥250. Ferry every 15–20 min (4:00–23:30 — no longer 24h).

Sengan-en garden: ① Kagoshima City View loop bus (from Tenmonkan, or Kagoshima-Chuo Station stop 4) to Sengan-en-mae Fare ¥230 (day pass ¥700, also covers trams). every ~30 min, 8:30–17:30.

Shiroyama observatory: ① City View bus to the Shiroyama stop, then ~3 min walk up Fare ¥230. every ~30 min.

THE TWO-MINUTE PORT TALK — read aloud at breakfast

Satsuma. Britain shelled this city in 1863 and achieved nothing except an alliance. Two boys from one narrow lane went on to build modern Japan and to destroy each other. Kagoshima has never entirely got over either event.

Sakurajima. It erupts a couple of hundred times a year. Children walk to school in hard hats, ash goes out in yellow bags like recycling, and a city ferry crosses to the mountain every 15–20 minutes from before dawn to almost midnight — the famous around-the-clock service ended in 2025.

Shōchū. Kagoshima has no meaningful sake tradition, because the soil that grows a volcano does not grow good rice. It grows sweet potatoes — and around 113 distilleries turning them into something Scotland would recognise as a protected regional spirit.

Satsuma crafts. One craft was killed by a British bombardment and rebuilt in 1985 by reverse-engineering museum specimens. The other was founded by Korean potters brought here against their will in 1598, and their descendants are still working.
