Why it's worth your hours

Shiroyama is a hill 107 m high on the city's edge, and the observatory on top looks over Sakurajima, the rooftops of Kagoshima and Kinko Bay in one frame. The city tourism site names it as the place to see all three, and it is the standard answer when passengers ask for the postcard view.

You reach it by the City View loop bus, which stops at Shiroyama between the Saigo statue and the Saigo cave stops. The ride is part of the sightseeing: the loop takes about 80 minutes in all and also calls at Sengan-en and the aquarium, so you can fold the viewpoint into a loop day. There is a nature trail of about 2 km with entrances at Tanshoen next to Terukuni Shrine and at the Satsuma Gishi monument.

The catch is the getting there. From Marine Port the shuttle (free or paid depending on your ship) takes about 30 minutes each way and runs every 30 to 60 minutes, then you wait for the City View bus. Haze or ash can spoil the volcano view. If your call is short, a taxi or the aquarium and ferry near Kita-futo are better value.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Pay the ¥230 City View fare in cash into the box when you get off; the day pass (¥700) also covers trams and city buses.
  2. A night-view City View course runs on Saturdays (Fridays and Saturdays in August, December and January) with a ¥250 night pass, which only suits a late sailing.
  3. The nature trail is about 2 km, with entrances at Tanshoen beside Terukuni Shrine and at the Satsuma Gishi monument; on a fine day it is a way to walk back down (our suggestion).
  4. The City View loop starts at Kagoshima-Chuo Station (East stop 4) and takes about 80 minutes; there are 19 buses a day.
  5. Look at the volcano's activity and wind first: ash drifting over the city makes the view hazy.
