Why we send people here

Tempura-fried chicken with ponzu and mustard — invented at Toyoken in 1926 and still their kitchen’s pride. Order the original zabuton cut and taste why Oita fights over it.

Before you count on it
  • No single published ride covers this one. Budget for a taxi both ways, or fold it into a guided day.
The story

Why Toriten at the source is famous

Toriten is chicken tempura, and it is Oita's, invented at Toyoken in 1926. It is battered lighter than karaage and eaten with ponzu and mustard rather than salt. The prefecture serves it everywhere including school lunches, which is the clearest sign a dish is genuinely local.

Where to have it

Three places, three different answers

The one the queue agrees on, the one people who live here use instead, and the one nearest your ship. Opening days change; check before you build a day around one.

If you have longer

What fits alongside it

Each of these still lands you back aboard with the hour to spare on a 6-hour call.

Timing

What Beppu is doing when you call

The same place is a different day in March and in November. This is the Beppu year, in order.

March
Mild and quiet

Bathing weather without the cold. The hells steam more visibly in cool air.

April
Cherry blossom on Mount Takasaki

Comfortable everywhere, and the monkeys are active.

May
Warm and green

The best month for combining Beppu with Yufuin on a long call.

June–July
Rainy season

Kyushu rains hard. Bathing and steam-cooking are unaffected — this is a rain-proof port.

August
Hot and humid

A hot spring town in August is a hard sell. Go early, use the sand bath, drink reimen.

September
Typhoon season

Kyushu is exposed. Check your itinerary rather than assuming.
