The little railway whose 2019 full reopening became the symbol of the coast’s recovery — the Miyako–Taro hop rides cliffs the whole way. Trains leave Miyako at 9:20, 10:45, 12:35 and 15:00 and come back from Taro roughly every 100 minutes, 11:40–15:00, so pick a pair before you leave the ship.
- 4 hr door to door needs a 6-hour call: a 2–3 hour stop cannot hold it. Pick something closer instead.
- No single published ride covers this one. Budget for a taxi both ways, or fold it into a guided day.
Why Sanriku Railway Rias Line is famous
The Rias Line runs 163 kilometres along a drowned-valley coast, and it is the railway that was rebuilt after 2011 rather than abandoned. Long sections are on viaducts between tunnels, so the ride is a sequence of sudden bays. It is a third-sector line the towns chose to keep.
