A seafood market hall on the road out of town — sweet shrimp, grilled snacks, and from November to March the Echizen crab that makes Fukui famous. Shops open by 10:00 and close 17:00–18:00 by season and day, so go before mid-afternoon. Closed 1 January and a few calendar days.

Why Nihonkai Sakana Machi is famous
A large seafood market hall near the port, stocked from Wakasa Bay: crab in winter, flatfish, and the salted mackerel that gave the old Saba Kaido, the mackerel road to Kyoto, its name. It is a market for people buying to take away, which keeps the prices honest.
