It exists, it is glorious, and from this port it is a 90-minute limited express that runs every two hours at ¥3,420 each way. Independent day-trippers get ~3 hours in the city with no safety margin — take the ship’s coach or choose Amanohashidate.
- This needs 10 hr, so it only fits a long call. On a short one it will cost you the ship, not the view.
- No single published ride covers this one. Budget for a taxi both ways, or fold it into a guided day.
Why Kyoto city: the verdict is famous
Kyoto is about two hours each way from Maizuru by road. That is the honest figure, and it means a Kyoto day from this berth only works on the longest calls and leaves very little Kyoto in it. Amanohashidate, forty minutes away, is the better use of the same hours.
Routes that already include it
Each one is a finished day we have walked and timed, with this stop in it. Read the route rather than assembling it yourself.
What to put beside it
Each of these still lands you back aboard with the hour to spare.
