Things to do in Nagoya on a cruise port day

The one thing: A castle palace, a sword shrine and eel rice, one train away.

What Nagoya isNagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture, and every railway into it meets at Nagoya Station. Big cruise ships berth on Kinjo Pier, beside a railway museum, LEGOLAND and an exhibition hall; the city centre is 24 minutes away by the Aonami Line. What people come for is a castle with a rebuilt palace, the sword shrine of Atsuta Jingu, the Toyota industry museum and a food culture of red miso, eel and fried chicken wings.

Your call, your day

What fits the time your ship gives you?

Your hours, or your ship. The page picks your day and the one booking, with the hour before all-aboard set aside.

Why Nagoya is worth getting off the ship for

Nagoya is a working city, not a resort, and its sights are spread out. Three of them carry the day. Nagoya Castle has its main keep closed, but the walls and the rebuilt Hommaru Palace are open. Atsuta Jingu is one of the country's great shrines, with a Treasure Hall and a sword museum. The Toyota Commemorative Museum sits one stop from Nagoya Station.

The fourth reason is lunch. Nagoya eats differently from Tokyo and Osaka: hitsumabushi eel rice, miso-katsu, miso-nikomi udon, tebasaki chicken wings and flat kishimen noodles. Atsuta Horaiken, the hitsumabushi house in this guide's plans, has a branch at the shrine gate.

What this port is not: a walk into town. The big ships berth on Kinjo Pier, a pier of exhibition halls and theme parks with no cruise terminal building. The city is 24 minutes away by train after a walk of about 1.2 km. Plan the day around Nagoya Station.

Nobody from this site has walked Nagoya. This guide is built from the Nagoya Port Authority's schedules, MLIT, the City of Nagoya, the Aonami Line's timetables and the sights' own pages, all read on 13 October 2026.

First: which pier is your ship at?

Nagoya has two cruise piers, 9.4 km apart by road on our routing. The Port Authority's rule of thumb is that most cruise ships use Garden Pier and larger ones use Kinjo Pier.

The four calls this guide is built for are all at Kinjo 80–81:

DateShipArrive–departFrom → to
Tue 10 Nov 2026Norwegian Jade08:30–18:00Osaka → Shimizu
Sat 14 Nov 2026Norwegian Jade06:30–16:00Shimizu → Kobe
Sat 28 Nov 2026Norwegian Jade08:30–19:00Osaka → Shimizu
Fri 26 Feb 2027Navigator of the Seas08:00–17:00Yokohama → Osaka

Mid-size ships move between the two. Norwegian Spirit (75,904 GT) used Garden No.3 on 26 May 2025, then Kinjo on 12 June 2025 because China Merchants Eden held Garden that day. The one small ship listed at Kinjo in 2026 is Mitsui Ocean Sakura on 16 December, when Asuka II holds Garden No.3. Check the berth in the daily programme the night before.

Kinjo Pier on a cruise day: what is there and what is not

Berths 80–81 are on a cargo and exhibition pier at about 35.0456 N, 136.8410 E. The Port Authority's Kinjo page lists Port Messe Nagoya, the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park, LEGOLAND Japan, Maker's Pier and the Kinjo Pier Arena. It lists no cruise facility.

The berths sit inside a restricted area. Entrants must show photo ID, and tour and transfer vehicles must be registered at least 5 days ahead. Friends cannot walk onto the quay to meet you, and a private car must be booked well before the call.

Where passengers leave the quay, and whether a tent or temporary terminal is set up, is not confirmed. Neither is a taxi stand. In 2016 the Port Authority ran a free shuttle between the quay and Kinjo-futo Station, 08:00–17:15, for a Diamond Princess call. No notice was found for any call since. Whether one runs in 2026 is set by the ship and the port on the day.

Food and Wi-Fi at Kinjo. Maker's Pier, 4 minutes from Kinjo-futo Station, is a shopping and dining complex. Its shops include CoCo Ichibanya, a Nagoya-food restaurant called Nagoya-meshi Dokoro Wami, a pizzeria and a gyukatsu shop. Hours vary by shop and closing days are irregular. Its free Wi-Fi network is MakersPier-Wifi.

A convenience store or ATM on Kinjo Pier is not confirmed. Bring yen from the ship's previous port, or withdraw at Nagoya Station.

From Kinjo Pier to Nagoya Station, step by step

Every rail route into Nagoya from Kinjo goes through Nagoya Station. The Aonami Line has no other subway interchange.

  1. Leave the ship and follow the ship's directions out of the restricted quay. If a shuttle is running, take it.
  2. Walk to Kinjo-futo Station on Mexico-odori. By map routing it is 1,176 m, or 15–17 minutes; MLIT gives about 10. The straight line is 831 m.
  3. Pay at the gate. Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and manaca all work. A single ticket is ¥360 (child ¥180). The ticket window sells manaca and opens 7:30–12:00, 16:00–18:30 and 20:00–22:30.
  4. Ride 24 minutes to Nagoya, 11 stations and 15.2 km. The city mentions 17-minute non-stop trains, but none appear in the current timetable, so plan on 24.
  5. Change at Nagoya for the subway, JR or Meitetsu.

On weekends they leave at :00 :15 :30 :43 in the 17 o'clock hour and :00 :13 :30 :45 in the 18 o'clock hour. Add 24 minutes for the arrival, then about 15 minutes on foot to the ship.

The Aonami Line 1-Day Ticket costs ¥800 and only pays off with more than two rides. The ¥620 Donichi Eco Kippu does not cover the Aonami Line at all.

By taxi. The Nagoya tariff from 14 October 2025 is ¥500 for the first 0.91 km, then ¥100 per 232 m. The fares below are our estimate: free-flow drive distances from berth 80/81 on that distance tariff only. Traffic time and any expressway tolls come on top.

A taxi stand at the quay or at Kinjo-futo Station is not confirmed. For four people the taxi to Nagoya Station costs about five times the train fares.

By water bus. Cruise Nagoya boats link Kinjo, Garden Pier and Sasashima-raibu near Nagoya Station. Kinjo to Garden is 40 minutes and ¥1,200; Kinjo to Sasashima, changing at Garden, is ¥2,000. Whether the boats run on the November call dates is not confirmed.

Getting around from Nagoya Station

Nagoya has six subway lines, with single fares of ¥210–¥340. Contactless credit cards work at every city subway gate from 3 September 2026.

The SCMAGLEV museum's 2026 calendar lists 4, 10, 17 and 24 November as closed. Ghibli Park closes every Tuesday. The Treasure Hall closes on 25–26 November, between the calls. Tokugawaen and Shirotori Garden close on 2, 9, 16, 24 and 30 November.

For Navigator of the Seas on Friday 26 February 2027, none of these Tuesday closures applies. Check each operator's 2027 calendar nearer the date.

Nagoya Castle and the Hommaru Palace in 2026

The castle opens 9:00–16:30, with last entry to the castle and the Hommaru Palace at 16:00. It closes only from 29 December to 1 January. Adult admission doubled on 1 October 2026, from ¥500 to ¥1,000; junior-high pupils and younger are free. A combined ticket with Tokugawaen costs ¥1,040.

The main keep is closed, and the castle's own guide page says so. What you see is the grounds, the stone walls and the Hommaru Palace, about 10 minutes on foot from the Main or East Gate. Give it two hours.

The Nagoya Castle Autumn Festival runs from 19 September to 23 November, so it is on for all three Jade calls. Meijo Park, next to the castle, colours in mid to late November. For food, Kinshachi Yokocho by the gate has a Yamamotoya branch open 10:30–17:30.

The station is Nagoyajo on the Meijo Line, Exit 7, then 5 minutes on foot. The city bus stop "Nagoyajo Seimon-mae" is right at the gate.

Atsuta Jingu, hitsumabushi and Shirotori Garden

Atsuta Jingu's grounds are free. Official opening hours for the grounds are not published. The Treasure Hall opens 9:00–16:30, last entry 16:00, adults ¥500. It shows contemporary Tokai swordsmiths from 30 October to 24 November, then a corner exhibition from 27 November.

The Kusanagi-kan sword museum keeps the same hours, also ¥500. A combined ticket for both is ¥800, sold until 15:30.

The shrine is 3 minutes from Meitetsu Jingu-mae, 8 minutes from JR Atsuta and 7 from Atsuta Jingu Nishi on the subway. Meitetsu limited expresses reach Jingu-mae from Nagoya in about 8 minutes.

Atsuta Horaiken has three dining branches. Jingu-ten stands just outside the shrine's south gate and closes on Tuesdays. Honten, the main shop in Godo-cho, closes on Wednesdays and the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, so it is the one open on 10 November. Lunch last orders are 14:00 at Honten and 14:30 at Jingu-ten. Expect a queue; only kaiseki courses are reserved.

Miya Kishimen Jingu-ten, inside the grounds, serves kishimen 9:00–16:30 (last order) every day. It is the fallback when Horaiken's queue is too long.

Shirotori Garden is a Japanese garden near Atsuta Jingu, reached from Atsuta Jingu Nishi Station. It opens 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, for ¥300; a combined ticket with Tokugawaen is ¥480. Whether the fee changed in the city's October 2026 revision is not confirmed. Its autumn light-up runs on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 14 to 29 November, open to 20:00.

Toyota, Noritake and the SCMAGLEV museum

The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology opens 9:30–17:00, last admission 16:30, and closes on Mondays. Adults pay ¥1,000. It is 3 minutes from Meitetsu Sako station, one stop from Meitetsu Nagoya on local trains, or 5 minutes by taxi from Nagoya Station. The Me~guru bus stops at the main entrance.

Noritake Garden is the nearest sight to Nagoya Station: 15 minutes on foot from JR Nagoya, or 5 from Kamejima Exit 2. The grounds are free. The Craft Center and Museum opens 10:00–17:00 for ¥500 and closes on Mondays. You can paint a 12 cm plate for ¥2,500, with reception until 16:00.

The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park is the one big sight on Kinjo Pier, 2 minutes from Kinjo-futo Station. It opens 10:00–17:30, last entry 30 minutes before closing, for ¥1,200. It closes on Tuesdays, so it is shut on 10 November and open on 14 and 28 November. On the Saturday calls it is the way to fill the last two hours before the ship.

LEGOLAND Japan, also on Kinjo Pier, is open on all three November dates, 10:00–17:00; SEA LIFE Nagoya opens 11:00–18:00. A dated 1-Day Pass starts at ¥4,900 for adults and ¥3,700 for children aged 3–18. Lost Kingdom Adventure is closed 9–13 November and Rebuild The World Center 4–19 November.

Autumn colour, Ghibli Park and Inuyama on 28 November

The Genji scrolls are out. The Tokugawa Art Museum shows two chapters of the National Treasure Tale of Genji picture scrolls, chapter 37 "Yokobue" and chapter 49 "Yadorigi (II)", from 14 to 29 November 2026 (Tokugawa Art Museum). That covers the Saturday 14 and 28 November calls, not Tuesday 10 November. They are the oldest surviving illustrated Genji, and the museum shows only one or two scenes a year.

The Saturday 28 November call, 08:30–19:00, is the one with room for a bigger day.

Autumn colour. Visit Nagoya's foliage windows put Tokugawaen and Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens at mid-November to early December, and Meijo Park at mid to late November. Yagoto Koshoji runs late November to early December. No 2026 forecast was found; on 10 and 14 November the colour will be early. Higashiyama's autumn light-up runs 14 November to 6 December.

Tokugawaen opens 9:30–17:30, last entry 17:00, for ¥300. The Tokugawa Art Museum beside it opens 10:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, at ¥2,000 for adults; the fee varies with the exhibition. Its special exhibition runs 8 October to 15 November, so it is on for the first two calls only. Reach both by JR Chuo Line to Ozone, about 20 minutes, then a 10-minute walk.

Ghibli Park closes every Tuesday and sells only date-specified tickets in advance; none are sold at the gate. Sales open on the 10th of the month two months ahead, at 14:00 Japan time, so November is already on sale. A Premium Day Pass covering all five areas is ¥7,800 at weekends; a Standard pass is ¥3,800. Weekend hours are 9:00–17:00.

The park is beside Ai-Chikyuhaku-kinen-koen Station on the Linimo line, reached by subway to Fujigaoka. The riding time from Nagoya Station is 41 minutes, transfers excluded. From the berth that adds up to about 1¾–2 hours each way. On 28 November that leaves about 10:45–15:30 in the park. On 14 November it leaves 3 hours at most, and we do not recommend it.

Inuyama Castle opens 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, for ¥1,000. Meitetsu runs from Meitetsu Nagoya to Inuyama in about 25 minutes or more, then it is a 20-minute walk. From the berth, allow about 1½–1¾ hours each way. It is sensible only on 28 November.

What to eat, and which branch is open on your date

Nagoya's food is the reason many people choose a city day over a tour. The catch is that the famous branches keep different closing days.

Tebasaki, the peppery fried chicken wings, is mostly an evening dish. The Sekai no Yamachan branch by the Shinkansen side of Nagoya Station is the only one confirmed open at lunch; most branches open at 17:00. Furaibo opens only from 17:00, which suits the 28 November call at a stretch.

Kishimen is also sold at stands on the JR Nagoya Station platforms. Their official hours are not confirmed, and secondary sources say they take cash only.

Morning service is Nagoya's breakfast habit. At Komeda's Coffee, from opening to 11:00 every day, a drink comes with free toast or a roll, an egg, or ogura sweet red-bean paste. Branch hours vary. On the 06:30 arrival of 14 November it is the obvious breakfast.

At Kinjo Pier itself, Maker's Pier has a Nagoya-food restaurant, Nagoya-meshi Dokoro Wami. Its hours are not published.

Garden Pier No.3, for the Japanese ships

Most Japanese-market ships, and the smaller luxury ships, berth at Garden Pier No.3. It is about 5 minutes on foot from Nagoyako Station, the terminus of the subway Meiko Line. From Sakae take the Meijo Line towards Kanayama, which runs through onto the Meiko Line; from Kanayama take the Meiko Line. From Nagoya Station allow 30–40 minutes with one change.

The Garden Tourist Information Office (052-654-7000) gives facility, event and cruise-arrival information. The Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium is on the pier: 9:30–17:30, entry closing an hour earlier, closed Mondays, adults ¥2,030. From December to mid-March it closes at 17:00.

Much of the rest of the pier is shut until 30 November 2026. The Nagoya Port Building with its observation deck and Maritime Museum, the icebreaker Fuji and Port House closed on 1 August for Asian Games athlete accommodation. The aquarium stays open.

From Garden Pier the city works the same way as from Kinjo, only by subway. Every plan in this guide still runs through Nagoya Station or Sakae.

The best things to do in Nagoya on a port day

Our full list, with the time each takes from the berth, is on the Nagoya top 10. In brief:

  1. Nagoya Castle and the Hommaru Palace: the keep is closed, the palace is the visit; ¥1,000.
  2. Atsuta Jingu and the Kusanagi-kan sword museum: free grounds, ¥800 for both museums.
  3. Hitsumabushi at Atsuta Horaiken: Honten is the branch open on Tuesdays.
  4. Osu Kannon and the Osu shopping streets: free, with the antique market on the 28th.
  5. Toyota Commemorative Museum: one stop from Nagoya, open every call date.
  6. SCMAGLEV and Railway Park: 2 minutes from Kinjo-futo Station; closed Tuesday 10 November.
  7. Tokugawaen and the Tokugawa Art Museum: autumn colour from mid-November.
  8. Miso-katsu at Yabaton and miso-nikomi at Yamamotoya: pick the branch by the date.
  9. Noritake Garden: 15 minutes on foot from Nagoya Station, free grounds.
  10. A private car day from the terminal: castle, garden, bamboo and Osu, back to the ship.

One day in Nagoya: model days

Toyota, Atsuta Jingu and hitsumabushi: the Tuesday 08:30–18:00 call

Written for Norwegian Jade on Tuesday 10 November 2026, the day the SCMAGLEV museum, Ghibli Park and two Horaiken branches are shut. It also fits Navigator of the Seas on Friday 26 February 2027 (08:00–17:00) one hour earlier, if the 14 March 2026 weekday timetable still runs.

Two sights that are open on Tuesday, one stop apart on the Meitetsu line, with eel rice at the Horaiken main shop between them. All-aboard is assumed at 17:30, 30 minutes before departure; check the daily programme. The train to plan on back is the 16:00 from Nagoya.

  1. 09:00Off the ship. Walk to Kinjo-futo Station (about 1.2 km, 15–17 minutes by our routing), or take the shuttle if the ship's programme lists one. Tap Suica, PASMO or manaca, or buy a ¥360 ticket.
  2. 09:29Aonami Line to Nagoya, arriving 09:53. Weekday trains leave Kinjo-futo at 09:11, 09:29 and 09:44, so a quick walk catches the earlier one.
  3. 10:15Meitetsu one stop to Sako (local trains), then 3 minutes on foot to the Toyota Commemorative Museum (9:30–17:00, adults ¥1,000). Or a taxi from Nagoya Station, about 5 minutes. Give it two hours.
  4. 12:30Back through Meitetsu Nagoya to Jingu-mae, about 8 minutes by limited express from Nagoya. The total time from Sako is not confirmed.
  5. 12:50Lunch: hitsumabushi at Atsuta Horaiken Honten, 503 Godo-cho (check the walk from Jingu-mae on a map), open on Tuesdays, lunch last order 14:00. The Jingu-ten at the south gate is closed today. If the queue is too long, Miya Kishimen inside the shrine serves kishimen to 16:30.
  6. 14:00Atsuta Jingu: the grounds are free. The Treasure Hall (¥500, last entry 16:00) has a special display of contemporary Tokai swordsmiths to 24 November; the combined ticket with the Kusanagi-kan is ¥800, sold until 15:30.
  7. 15:30Meitetsu from Jingu-mae to Meitetsu Nagoya, about 8 minutes, then walk to the Aonami Line platform at Nagoya.
  8. 16:00Aonami Line to Kinjo-futo, arriving 16:24. The 16:15 (arriving 16:39) is the fallback. Do not plan on the 16:30.
  9. 16:40Walk back to berths 80–81. At the gangway about 16:40, 50 minutes before the assumed 17:30 all-aboard; about 16:55 on the fallback train. The sun sets at 16:50.

Atsuta, Shirotori Garden, the Osu antique market and Sakae: the 08:30–19:00 Saturday

Written for Norwegian Jade on Saturday 28 November 2026, the longest call, inside every official autumn-colour window and on the Osu Kannon antique-market day. All-aboard is assumed at 18:30.

The south of the city in the morning, the old temple quarter in the afternoon and Sakae as the light goes. Saturday rules apply: the ¥620 Donichi Eco Kippu covers the subway and city buses today, but not the Aonami Line. Plan on the 17:00 from Nagoya.

  1. 09:00Off the ship and on foot to Kinjo-futo Station, about 15–17 minutes.
  2. 09:29Aonami Line to Nagoya (Saturday timetable), arriving 09:53. Buy the Donichi Eco Kippu (¥620) at a subway machine if you will ride the subway twice or more.
  3. 10:15Meitetsu to Jingu-mae, about 8 minutes, then Atsuta Jingu. The Treasure Hall reopened on 27 November with a new corner exhibition (¥500, last entry 16:00).
  4. 11:30Lunch at Atsuta Horaiken Jingu-ten, outside the south gate: it opens at 11:30, is open on Saturdays, and the queue starts early. Hitsumabushi is the dish.
  5. 13:00Shirotori Garden (9:00–17:00, adults ¥300), near Atsuta Jingu Nishi Station, for the autumn colour. Walking minutes from the station are not published; check the map.
  6. 14:15Subway to Kamimaezu (Exit 8 or 12, 2 minutes) or Osu Kannon (Exit 2). Today is the 28th: the antique market fills the temple precinct. Then the Osu shopping streets.
  7. 15:45Subway to Sakae: the glass roof of Oasis 21 and the Mirai Tower (daytime adults ¥1,300). The tower's hours for 28 November are not confirmed. The sun sets at 16:41.
  8. 16:35Higashiyama Line from Sakae to Nagoya, then walk to the Aonami platform.
  9. 17:00Aonami Line to Kinjo-futo, arriving 17:24. The 17:15 (arriving 17:39) is the fallback; the 17:30 (arriving 17:54) is the last with any margin.
  10. 17:40At the gangway about 17:40, 50 minutes before the assumed 18:30 all-aboard. The next port is Shimizu.

Breakfast at the station, the castle at opening and Osu: the 06:30–16:00 Saturday

Written for Norwegian Jade on Saturday 14 November 2026, arriving from Shimizu at 06:30 and leaving for Kobe at 16:00. All-aboard is assumed at 15:30.

The early arrival is the asset: breakfast in Nagoya Station, the castle as it opens at 9:00, and lunch in Osu. The ¥620 Donichi Eco Kippu is valid on the subway today. The day ends early, so plan on the 13:45 from Nagoya.

  1. 07:00Off the ship and on foot to Kinjo-futo Station. Its ticket window opens at 7:30; IC cards work at the gate before then.
  2. 07:30Aonami Line to Nagoya. Four trains leave Kinjo-futo in the 7 o'clock hour on Saturdays (exact minutes not captured); the 08:00 reaches Nagoya at 08:24.
  3. 08:00Breakfast in the station: miso-katsu at Yabaton JR Nagoya-eki-ten (opens 7:00), or a Komeda's Coffee morning service until 11:00: order a drink and get free toast with an egg or ogura bean paste.
  4. 08:40Subway to Nagoyajo (Sakura-dori Line to Hisaya-odori, then the Meijo Line, about 9 minutes), Exit 7 and 5 minutes on foot.
  5. 09:00Nagoya Castle as it opens (¥1,000): the grounds, the walls and the Hommaru Palace, about 10 minutes from the Main or East Gate. The keep is closed. The Autumn Festival is on.
  6. 11:00Subway to Osu Kannon (Exit 2) and the temple, free, then the Osu shopping streets. Lunch at Yabaton Yabacho Honten (opens 11:00) or the stalls.
  7. 13:15Subway back to Nagoya Station and the Aonami platform.
  8. 13:45Aonami Line to Kinjo-futo, arriving 14:09. The 14:00 (arriving 14:24) is the fallback.
  9. 14:25At the gangway about 14:25, an hour before the assumed all-aboard.

Half a day: Nagoya Station, Noritake Garden and miso-nikomi, back by 13:40

Fits any call of six hours or more, and anyone who wants the afternoon on board or on Kinjo Pier. Times use the weekday timetable of Tuesday 10 November; on Saturdays the 09:29 still runs and the return trains are the same.

No subway at all: one Aonami ride each way, a 15-minute walk to Noritake's garden and lunch in the station towers. Every sight here is open on Tuesdays.

  1. 09:00Off the ship and on foot to Kinjo-futo Station, about 15–17 minutes.
  2. 09:29Aonami Line to Nagoya, arriving 09:53, ¥360.
  3. 10:10Walk 15 minutes from JR Nagoya Station to Noritake Garden. The grounds are free; the Craft Center and Museum opens 10:00–17:00, adults ¥500, closed Mondays.
  4. 10:30Optional: paint a 12 cm plate (¥2,500, reception until 16:00). The shop opens 10:00–18:00.
  5. 11:45Walk back for lunch at Yamamotoya Sohonke Towers-ten, JR Central Towers 13F, from 11:00: miso-nikomi udon. Or miso-katsu at Yabaton in the station or the Esca underground mall.
  6. 13:00Aonami Line to Kinjo-futo, arriving 13:24. Trains leave Nagoya at :00, :15, :30 and :45 between 13:00 and 16:59 on every day.
  7. 13:40At the gangway about 13:40. Or, on any day but Tuesday 10 November, stay at Kinjo for the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park (to 17:30, ¥1,200).

How to think about your hours

Work backwards from the ship. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure (check the daily programme), and you want to be at the gangway well before that. The first half hour goes on getting ashore. On top of that, Kinjo costs about 45 minutes each way to Nagoya Station: the walk, a wait and 24 minutes on the train. So the time you can use in the city is the call length minus about three and a half hours.

CallIn the cityWhat fits from Kinjo Pier
6 hoursabout 2½Kinjo Pier only: the SCMAGLEV museum (not Tuesdays), LEGOLAND or the Maker's Pier food tour. Or Nagoya Station, Noritake and lunch.

9–9½ hours (10 and 14 Nov, 26 Feb)about 5½–6Two sights: Toyota and Atsuta, or the castle and Osu.
10½ hours (28 Nov)about 7Atsuta, Shirotori, the Osu market and Sakae. Or Tokugawaen and the castle. Or Ghibli Park with tickets, or Inuyama.

The four big-ship calls in this guide run 9 to 10½ hours. The 14 November call arrives at 06:30, which gives breakfast in the city and the castle at opening but ends at 16:00. Daylight is short: the sun sets at 16:50 on 10 November and 16:41 on 28 November. The full list of calls is on cruises to Nagoya.

Tours are booked through Viator (a Tripadvisor company). If you book, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend — which is why each tour page has a "think twice" note.

About the return to the ship. One listing, the private car day (483236P3), writes that it picks you up at the boat terminal and returns you there in time. Kinjo's quay is a restricted area, and tour vehicles must be registered at least 5 days ahead. Book it well before the call and ask the operator to confirm the registration.

The Highlight Tour (122385P4) can meet you at the port if you give the ship's name and arrival time, but on 13 October 2026 it showed no open dates on the Jade days. Every other listing meets in the city, so the walk and the Aonami Line come on top, about 45 minutes each way. The Kinjo food tour meets inside Kinjo-futo Station.

Whatever you book, tell the guide your all-aboard time when you meet. Agree on the train back from Nagoya before you start: the 16:00 on 10 November, the 13:45 on 14 November, the 17:00 on 28 November.

IC cards. manaca is sold at the ticket windows of Nagoya and Kinjo-futo stations on the Aonami Line, and it costs ¥2,000 including a ¥500 deposit. Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and the other big regional cards work in the manaca area under nationwide mutual use. If you already hold one, top it up and use it.

ATMs. None is confirmed on Kinjo Pier. Seven Bank machines at 7-Eleven take Visa and Mastercard 24 hours, in 11 languages, up to ¥100,000 per withdrawal with a chip card. Japan Post Bank machines take most foreign cards, open 7:00–23:00 Monday to Saturday and 7:00–21:00 on Sundays, with a ¥50,000 limit and a ¥220 fee for some cards.

Tax-free shopping changed on 1 November 2026. All the Nagoya calls fall under the new refund method. You pay the tax-inclusive price in the shop. Within 90 days, at the departure airport or seaport, you scan your passport at a tax-free kiosk and carry the goods for customs to confirm. The shop or its agent then refunds the tax.

The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per shop per day, and goods used up in Japan do not qualify. JNTO says cruise passengers also need their landing permit, and the sealed-bag rule for consumables is gone. Whether Kinjo has a kiosk is not confirmed. Keep receipts and goods ready for the check at the ship's last Japanese port.

Wi-Fi. NAGOYA Free Wi-Fi (networks 00_, 01_ and 02_NAGOYA_Free_Wi-Fi) is free and unencrypted, and asks you to log in again every 30 minutes. It covers tourist information centres, Me~guru buses, Tokugawaen and Shirotori Garden. Aichi_Free_Wi-Fi is the prefecture's network.

When to go: weather, daylight and the next port

  • November in Nagoya averages 17.3 °C by day and 8.6 °C at night, with 79.1 mm of rain over about 6 wet days (1991–2020 normals). Pack a layer and an umbrella.
  • Daylight is the tight resource. The sun rises at 6:22 and sets at 16:50 on 10 November; 6:26 and 16:47 on 14 November; 6:39 and 16:41 on 28 November. Evening light-ups start after the ship has sailed or near it.
  • Autumn colour peaks after the first two calls. The 28 November call sits inside every official window: Tokugawaen, Higashiyama, Meijo Park and Shirotori Garden.
  • Events on 10 and 14 November: the Nagoya Castle Autumn Festival, the Horikawa Cruise and the Higashiyama Autumn Festival, all to 23 November. On 14 November the Aichi-Nagoya International Animation Film Festival runs (13–18 November). On 28 November the Nippon Domannaka Festival is at Morikoro Park in Nagakute, not central Nagoya.
  • February (Navigator of the Seas, 26 February 2027): this guide's weather figures are for November. Check the forecast before you sail, and note the aquarium closes at 17:00 from December to mid-March.
  • Rain plan: the Toyota museum, the Tokugawa Art Museum, the Noritake Craft Center, the SCMAGLEV museum (not on 10 November) and the aquarium are all indoors.

The next port. After the 10 and 28 November calls, Norwegian Jade sails on to Shimizu; our Shimizu guide picks up the next day. After the 14 November call it goes to Kobe. Navigator of the Seas goes on to Osaka.

Mistakes we see passengers make

  1. Believing the ship is three minutes from Kinjo-futo Station. That figure is for the small water-bus landing. Berths 80–81 are about 1.2 km away by our routing, 15–17 minutes on foot; MLIT says about 10. Plan the walk both ways.
  2. Riding the subway to Shiyakusho for the castle. The station is now called Nagoyajo (Nagoya Castle). Use Exit 7, 5 minutes on foot. Jingu-nishi is likewise now Atsuta Jingu Nishi.
  3. Planning the SCMAGLEV museum or Ghibli Park on Tuesday 10 November. Both are closed. The railway museum shuts on 4, 10, 17 and 24 November; Ghibli Park shuts every Tuesday. Go on 14 or 28 November instead.
  4. Queueing at the wrong Horaiken on a Tuesday. Jingu-ten at the south gate and Matsuzakaya-ten in Sakae close on Tuesdays. Honten, in Godo-cho, is open on 10 November; lunch last order is 14:00.
  5. Buying the Donichi Eco Kippu for the trip from the pier. The ¥620 weekend pass covers the city subway and buses only, not the Aonami Line, and it cannot be used at all on Tuesday 10 November. Pay ¥360 each way on the Aonami.
  6. Expecting to climb the castle keep. The main keep is closed. The ¥1,000 ticket covers the grounds and the Hommaru Palace.
  7. Catching a late Aonami train back. From Nagoya, the train plus the walk is about 40 minutes. On 10 November plan on the 16:00 and treat the 16:15 as the fallback; on 28 November plan on the 17:00.
  8. Counting on an ATM at the pier. None is confirmed on Kinjo Pier. Withdraw at Nagoya Station; Seven Bank machines take foreign cards.

Quick answers

Nagoya cruise port questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Nagoya?

Large international ships use Kinjo Pier, berths 80–81, at about 35.0456 N, 136.8410 E: Norwegian Jade on 10, 14 and 28 November 2026 and Navigator of the Seas on 26 February 2027. Most Japanese-market and smaller luxury ships use Garden Pier No.3, about 5 minutes on foot from Nagoyako Station on the Meiko subway line. Kinjo has no cruise terminal building listed in any official source.

How do I know whether my ship is at Kinjo Pier or Garden Pier?

The Port Authority's rule is that most cruise ships use Garden Pier and larger ships use Kinjo. Both Norwegian Jade and Navigator of the Seas are listed at Kinjo 80–81. Mid-size ships move: Norwegian Spirit used Garden No.3 on 26 May 2025 and Kinjo on 12 June 2025, when another ship held Garden. Check the daily programme the night before.

How do I get from Kinjo Pier to Nagoya Station?

Walk about 1.2 km, 15–17 minutes by our routing (MLIT says about 10), to Kinjo-futo Station, or take the shuttle if your ship runs one. Then the Aonami Line: 24 minutes and ¥360 to Nagoya, child ¥180. On weekdays trains leave Kinjo-futo at 09:11, 09:29 and 09:44; back from Nagoya, every 15 minutes between 13:00 and 16:59.

Is there a shuttle bus from the Nagoya cruise port?

Not confirmed for 2026. When Diamond Princess berthed at Kinjo in 2016, the Port Authority ran a free shuttle between the quay and Kinjo-futo Station, 08:00–17:15. No notice was found for later calls. Whether one runs, and whether it is free, is decided on the day; check the daily programme.

How much is a taxi from Kinjo Pier to Nagoya Station?

About ¥7,300, our estimate: 16.6 km and 19 minutes without traffic on the Nagoya tariff of ¥500 for the first 0.91 km and ¥100 per 232 m after, in force from 14 October 2025. Traffic time and any expressway tolls come on top. A taxi stand at the quay is not confirmed.

What is closed in Nagoya on Tuesday 10 November 2026?

The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park on Kinjo Pier, Ghibli Park, Atsuta Horaiken's Jingu-ten and Matsuzakaya-ten, and Yamamotoya Sohonke's Honke in Sakae. Open that day: Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Jingu and its Treasure Hall, the Toyota museum, Tokugawaen, Noritake Garden, the aquarium, LEGOLAND, Horaiken Honten and Yamamotoya Towers-ten.

Can I visit Ghibli Park from a Nagoya cruise stop?

Realistically only on Saturday 28 November, and only with a date-specified ticket bought in advance; none are sold at the park. It is closed every Tuesday. From the berth it is about 1¾–2 hours each way, giving roughly 10:45–15:30 in the park. A Premium Day Pass is ¥7,800 at weekends, a Standard ¥3,800.

Can I go inside Nagoya Castle's main keep?

No. The main keep is closed. The ticket, ¥1,000 for adults from 1 October 2026 and free for junior-high pupils and younger, covers the grounds and the Hommaru Palace. Hours are 9:00–16:30, last entry 16:00. Take the Meijo Line to Nagoyajo Station, Exit 7.

Where can I eat hitsumabushi near Atsuta Jingu, and is it open on my date?

Atsuta Horaiken has three dining branches. Honten in Godo-cho is open on all three Jade dates (closed Wednesdays and 2nd and 4th Thursdays). Jingu-ten at the shrine's south gate and Matsuzakaya-ten in Sakae close on Tuesdays, so they are shut on 10 November and open on 14 and 28 November. Expect a queue; only kaiseki courses are reserved.

Can I use Suica or a credit card on Nagoya's trains?

Suica and PASMO work on the Aonami Line and the subway through manaca's nationwide mutual use. Contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover and UnionPay cards work at every city subway station from 3 September 2026. Card touch on the Aonami Line is not confirmed, so use an IC card or a ¥360 ticket there.

How does tax-free shopping work for cruise passengers from November 2026?

From 1 November 2026 you pay the full price in the shop. Within 90 days, at the departure airport or seaport, you scan your passport at a tax-free kiosk and show the goods to customs; the shop then refunds the tax. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per shop per day. JNTO says cruise passengers also need their landing permit.

What can I do at Kinjo Pier without going into the city?

The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park, 2 minutes from Kinjo-futo Station (10:00–17:30, ¥1,200; closed Tuesday 10 November). LEGOLAND Japan (10:00–17:00, adults from ¥4,900), open on all three November dates. Maker's Pier, 4 minutes from the station, for food and free Wi-Fi; its shop hours vary.
