The school where 320 people sheltered on the roof on 11 March 2011, kept as the tsunami left it and opened as a memorial. Free; closed Mondays. A long trip by public transport, and one to make only if you mean to.
Arahama Elementary School stood 700 metres from the sea. On 11 March 2011, 320 pupils, staff and residents sheltered on its roof and upper floors as the tsunami came through the second storey; all were rescued. The city kept the building as it was left and opened it in 2017.
