From the berth
About 15 min on foot, free
Sadahama pier at the Toba Marine Terminal, after the ship's tender. Toba has no cruise berth: ships anchor off the Toba Marine Terminal and passengers ride the ship's tenders or local launches ashore. On the council's July 2026 list every call from Oct 2026 to Mar 2027 lands at the Sadahama pier (the Marine Terminal) except Mitsui Ocean Sakura (12 Nov 2026), which lands at the Mikimoto Pearl Island pier. The 15-minute walk is the port council's figure; the aquarium's own page says about 10 minutes from Toba Station. The tender is part of the ship's service, so the walk costs nothing.

Our estimate. The aquarium's site does not give a visit length.
Hours

Elementary and junior high ¥1,600; preschool (age 3 and over) ¥800. No senior discount is listed. A disability-certificate holder pays ¥2,000 as an adult. A ¥4,000 online-only ticket with Mikimoto Pearl Island is on the Mikimoto page. Payment methods at the desk are not stated: unverified.
Why it's worth your hours

Toba Aquarium is the bay's all-weather option: it is open every day of the year, it is a 15-minute walk from the tender landing, and it is indoors. On a wet or windy day, when the tenders may be disrupted anyway, it is the sensible fallback to the island and the bay boat.

The headline animal is Serena, a dugong. The aquarium says she came in on 15 April 1987 and describes her as the only dugong kept in Japan; at arrival she was 147.5 cm and 67 kg, and the 2026 article gives 263 cm and 375 kg. The aquarium's own site also puts its sea otters up front, with a live camera on the sea-otter tank and a book for their 40th anniversary.

The catch is the price and the pace. At ¥2,800 it costs more than Mikimoto Pearl Island, there is no senior discount, and it is a big building that takes a couple of hours. If you only have one stop, take the island and its ama divers instead; if you have a spare hour and a wet day, take the aquarium.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Last entry is 16:00 on ordinary days (16:30 in Golden Week, August and Silver Week), and closing is 17:00, so do not leave it for the last hour on a late call.
  2. Buy the online combination ticket with Mikimoto Pearl Island (¥4,000 adult, valid one month), since the aquarium's desk price is ¥2,800.
  3. It is open all year with no closed days, which makes it the safe choice when other sights are shut.
  4. The aquarium's site mentions a sea-otter live camera, so you can check what the animals are doing before you commit.
  5. The council puts Mikimoto at 10 minutes and the aquarium at 15 minutes from the terminal, and the aquarium itself says Toba Station is about 10 minutes away, so the three are close together.

The aquarium's own site also puts its sea otters up front, with a live camera on the sea-otter tank and a book for their 40th anniversary.
