Magewappa is bentwood made from Akita cedar: a thin sheet steamed, bent into an oval and stitched with cherry bark. Odate has made it since at least the 1600s, when a lord encouraged it as a winter income for low-ranking samurai. The cedar regulates moisture, which is why rice keeps in it.
