This guide is for passengers whose cruise starts or ends in Kobe, not those with a day in port. Which of the two terminals is yours? How do you get there from Kansai Airport with two large cases? Which district should you sleep in, and what is the earliest flight home you can safely book?

The answers come from the port’s official schedule and the City of Kobe’s terminal pages. They also draw on the timetables and fare pages of the ferry, bus and Port Liner operators, Yamato Transport’s published counter list, and one Kobe taxi company’s published tariff. Journey times for trips that use more than one operator come from a timetable aggregator, using the weekday timetable for Wednesday 7 October 2026. Nobody from this site has done these transfers, so nothing here is first-hand. Where a number is our own estimate, it says so. For the day-in-port version, see the Kobe cruise port guide.

The short version

Question Answer
Which terminal? Usually Naka Pier for the Japanese lines that start and end voyages here. Kobe Port Terminal for almost every international ship. Check your documents
KIX → ship Bay Shuttle ferry and Port Liner: ¥1,880 including the Port Liner, about 70–80 min to Port Terminal. Or the bus to Sannomiya: ¥2,200, about 65 min
Itami → ship Bus to Sannomiya: ¥1,200, about 40 min, then Port Liner (¥210) or taxi
Kobe Airport → ship Port Liner to Port Terminal: 13 min, ¥290
Shin-Kobe → ship Subway and Port Liner to Port Terminal: about 20 min, ¥420. Taxi to Naka Pier: about 12 min
Luggage Yamato same-day delivery to Kobe hotels from Itami, Kobe Airport, Kyoto and Osaka counters. Not from KIX
Where to sleep Sannomiya for most people. The Meriken Park and Motomachi waterfront for Naka Pier. Shin-Kobe if you come by Shinkansen
Earliest flight home About 11:00 domestic from Kobe Airport, 11:30 from Itami, 13:30 international from KIX (assumptions below)

Which terminal: it depends who you are sailing with

Kobe has two cruise terminals, about 1.3 km apart:

Kobe Port Terminal Naka Pier Cruise Terminal
Where Shinko Pier No.4, at the city end of the bridge to Port Island The tip of Naka Pier, beside Port Tower. The terminal is on floors 1–2 of the building that also houses the Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel
Ships Large ships. Ovation of the Seas, MSC Bellissima and Diamond Princess all used it in 2026 Up to the 77,000-ton class. Mostly Japanese ships and small luxury ships
Nearest transit Port Liner “Port Terminal” station, right outside Minato-Motomachi subway, 9 min on foot. JR/Hanshin Motomachi, 15 min
Taxi, official times About 6 min from JR Sannomiya, 10 min from Shin-Kobe About 4 min from JR Motomachi, 8 min from Sannomiya, 12 min from Shin-Kobe
Opening hours (city figures) 8:30–17:30, changed to suit ship calls 8:00–22:30, changed to suit ship calls

Here is what the schedule says about turnarounds. The official schedule puts Kobe in brackets as the previous or next port when a voyage begins or ends here. For October to December 2026, every call marked that way is a Japanese-market ship at Naka Pier: Mitsui Ocean Sakura on 7 and 9 October, Asuka III on 11 and 13 December, and Asuka II on 23, 25 and 26 December. Asuka II’s 26 December sailing goes on to Kaohsiung, so that one is an international voyage from Kobe. The brackets are not complete: Mitsui Ocean Cruises’ own voyage list has a cruise ending in Kobe on 12 October that the schedule does not mark, and it too is Mitsui Ocean Sakura at Naka Pier. Earlier in the year the pattern did not hold: in March 2026 Asuka II turned around at Port Terminal.

International lines, by contrast, use Port Terminal for every call in the same three months except Silver Moon’s on 5–6 October, which is at Naka Pier. The schedule does not mark anyone joining or leaving partway through a voyage. So if you are on an international ship and your booking says you join or leave in Kobe, expect Port Terminal. That is our inference from the pattern, not a rule.

How to tell which one is yours

  1. Your boarding documents. They name the terminal or give an address. Port Terminal is at 4-5 Shinko-cho; Naka Pier is at 5-6 Hatoba-cho. Both are in Chuo ward.
  2. The port’s schedule. The Kobe Tourism Bureau’s ETA table lists every ship by date with a berth code. S-4Q and S-4O mean Port Terminal; NAKA-BC means Naka Pier.
  3. Check again the day before. Several ships, including Asuka II, the two Mitsui ships and Azamara Pursuit, used both terminals on different dates in 2026.

Kobe or Osaka? They are separate ports about 22 km apart. If your documents say Osaka (Tempozan), read the Osaka embarkation guide instead.

From Kansai Airport (KIX)

KIX is across Osaka Bay from Kobe. Kobe Airport is on its own island south of Port Island, and Port Terminal is on the same Port Liner line, between Kobe Airport and Sannomiya. That makes the ferry the natural route.

The Bay Shuttle ferry: quickest, and it lands on your line

  • Fare: ¥1,880 one way (children ¥940). The operator sells a “Port Liner fare included” one-way ticket at the same ¥1,880, so ask for that one. A return valid 120 days is ¥3,060.
  • Payment: cash in yen or the main credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, UnionPay).
  • Getting to the boat: buy your ticket at the Bay Shuttle counter at KIX, then take the free shuttle bus to the pier. From Terminal 1 it goes from bus stop No.12, ground floor; Terminal 2 has its own stop.
  • Crossing: about 31 minutes to the Kobe Airport pier. A free bus links the pier and the airport terminal (2–3 minutes), or it is a 5–6 minute walk.
  • Boarding begins five minutes before departure, and the operator asks you to be at the pier at least 20 minutes early.

21:50 22:00 22:31 (last useful sailing)
23:50 00:00 00:31: no Port Liner connection, and no taxi stand at the ferry terminal

From Kobe Airport station, Port Liner trains towards Sannomiya take 13 minutes to Port Terminal (¥290 if you pay separately). On a weekday morning in our test search, a 10:46 start from the arrivals hall reached Port Terminal station at 11:53. For Naka Pier, stay on to Sannomiya, the end of the line, and take a taxi (about 8 minutes).

The airport limousine bus to Sannomiya

  • ¥2,200 one way (children ¥1,100). Buy from the ticket machine on the day; no reservations are needed towards Kobe.
  • About 65 minutes nonstop from Terminal 1 to Kobe Sannomiya; some buses run via Rokko Island and take about 75.
  • First from KIX at 06:20, last at 22:47 from T2 / 23:00 from T1, reaching Sannomiya at 00:05. Daytime buses run about every 20 minutes.
  • At Sannomiya, the Port Liner station is a few minutes’ walk from the bus stop, and Port Terminal is two stops (¥210). For Naka Pier, take a taxi.

With heavy luggage this is the easiest option: bags go in the hold and you get off in central Sannomiya. It is also the only option after a late landing.

By rail

The fastest rail route in our search took about 1 hour 27 minutes to Sannomiya, for ¥2,440, with two changes. It is slower than the ferry or the bus and has more changes, so we would not use it with big cases.

By taxi

Kobe MK Taxi, one operator, publishes pre-booked fixed fares from KIX: ¥22,000 to central Kobe east of Tor Road, which includes Port Terminal, and ¥23,000 west of it. For Naka Pier, ask which zone applies when you book. Tolls are extra, and the operator puts them at about ¥2,050. On a pick-up at KIX it also charges ¥1,000 for airport parking (¥300 at Itami), and ¥500 if you book a set time with a standard car. Fares go up by 20% between 22:00 and 05:00, and a van for up to nine costs more. These are one company’s prices, not a regulated airport rate.

From Itami (Osaka International Airport)

Itami handles domestic flights. It matters if you connect through Tokyo or arrive from elsewhere in Japan.

Route Time Fare With large luggage
Airport bus to Kobe Sannomiya About 40 min ¥1,200 (IC cards and contactless bank cards accepted) Easy: one ride, bags in the hold
Monorail, Hankyu (change at Hotarugaike and Juso) About 57–64 min to Sannomiya ¥590 Two changes
Kobe MK fixed-fare taxi (pre-booked) Not published; allow about 45 min (our estimate) ¥11,500 to central Kobe east of Tor Road, ¥12,500 west, plus about ¥1,600 tolls Door to door

The Itami bus is run by Hanshin Bus and Hankyu Kanko Bus. It leaves Itami at 07:50 (first) and then every 15–60 minutes until 21:15 (last, arriving 21:55). No reservations: buy the ticket at the stop on the day. The same timetable runs every day.

From Kobe Airport (UKB)

On a domestic connection into Kobe Airport, the Port Liner runs to Port Terminal in 13 minutes for ¥290, with no change. For Naka Pier, ride to Sannomiya (¥340) and take a taxi. Long-haul flights from the US, UK and Australia do not land here.

From the main stations, including the Shinkansen

From To Port Terminal To Naka Pier
Shin-Kobe (Shinkansen) Subway one stop to Sannomiya (2 min, ¥210), walk, Port Liner two stops (¥210): about 20 min, ¥420 Port Loop bus to Meriken Park, ¥230, about every 20–25 min from 09:25 on weekdays (about 28 min; weekend times differ), then a short walk. Or a taxi, about 12 min (city figure)
Sannomiya (JR, Hankyu, Hanshin, subway) Port Liner two stops, about 5 min, ¥210 Kaigan subway line from Sannomiya-Hanadokeimae to Minato-Motomachi (2 stops, ¥210), then 9 min on foot. Or a taxi, about 8 min
Shin-Osaka (Shinkansen) JR rapid to Sannomiya, then Port Liner: about 47 min, ¥790, one change JR to Motomachi, then walk or taxi

Taxi fares. We could not reach the regulator’s Kobe tariff page. Kobe MK publishes its meter rates from 27 November 2025: ¥480 for the first 836 m, then ¥100 per 232 m (or per 1 minute 25 seconds in slow traffic), with 20% more from 22:00 to 05:00. On that tariff, Sannomiya to either terminal comes to roughly ¥1,000–1,500, and Shin-Kobe to either terminal about ¥1,700–2,000. These are our estimates, before any time charges. Japan’s national tourism organisation says not every taxi takes cards, so carry some cash.

The Port Liner is a driverless line with lifts. Wheelchair users are asked to contact the gate staff or use the intercom before boarding.

Luggage: forwarding, storage and porters

Same-day delivery to your Kobe hotel

Yamato Transport’s own counter list (dated 1 September 2026) is the document that matters. Same-day delivery goes to hotels only, and only in named wards. For Kobe the list covers Chuo, Hyogo, Kita, Nagata, Suma, Tarumi and Nishi wards. Sannomiya, Motomachi, Harborland, Shin-Kobe and Port Island are all in Chuo ward.

Hand in at Cut-off Delivery Fee to a Kobe hotel
Itami, Central Building 1F 11:30 From 20:00 Standard rate + ¥1,100
Kobe Airport Terminal 1 or 2 11:30 From 20:00 Standard rate + ¥550
Shin-Osaka East Exit, Osaka Station No.1 and No.4 Buildings, Umeda, Namba 11:30 From 20:00 Standard rate + ¥1,100
Kyoto Station area counters 10:00 From 20:00 Standard rate + ¥1,100
KIX Terminal 1 — — Not available to Kobe hotels. KIX’s same-day hotel service covers Osaka and Kyoto city hotels only. Its home-delivery option (cut-off 10:00) reaches homes in Hyogo, not hotels

So if you land at KIX, you either carry your bags to Kobe or send them the next day. If you spend a night or two in Kyoto or Osaka first, you can send them on to your Kobe hotel the morning you travel, but check in by 20:00 at the earliest.

Standard TA-Q-BIN rates go by size: length + width + height. A typical large suitcase is a 160 size (up to 160 cm and 25 kg). Yamato’s rate table gives ¥3,020 for a 160 size between Kansai prefectures (for example, Osaka or Kyoto to Kobe), and ¥2,410 within one prefecture (for example, Kobe Airport to a Kobe hotel). These are cash prices: take ¥100 off per item if you drop the bag at a counter or convenience store yourself. The maximum is 200 cm and 30 kg.

To the airport for your flight home

Yamato’s airport service delivers to the major airports by the day before your flight. Bags must be handed over two days before departure (three in some areas). It is no use for bags coming off the ship on the morning you fly. It is useful if you stay on in Kobe or Kyoto after the cruise.

To or from the ship

We found no published Yamato service to either Kobe cruise terminal, and nothing official saying a line accepts parcels addressed to the ship. Japanese lines encourage passengers to send bags ahead by courier; Asuka Cruise says so in its FAQ. Whether your line accepts bags sent to the terminal, to which address and by what date, is a question for your line.

Storage and lockers

  • Terminal lockers. Port Terminal has 13 lockers on 3F, to the left of the main entrance past the lift. Naka Pier has 20 on 2F, between the toilets. Both charge ¥600 a day for large, ¥500 for medium and ¥200 for small, and another day’s fee each time midnight passes. The large ones (113 × 46 × 69 cm) may take a suitcase, but there are only 4 at Port Terminal and 5 at Naka Pier, with no reservations. They take ¥100 coins only, and neither terminal has a change machine. At both terminals the lockers can only be used while the building is open. They are for a day bag, not your luggage for a fortnight.
  • Yamato baggage storage at Kobe Airport. Bags must be collected the same day, by 18:00 at Terminal 1 or 17:00 at Terminal 2, at ¥1,000 a piece. It is handy if you fly into Kobe Airport in the morning and board in the afternoon.
  • Porters. On embarkation day the lines take checked bags at the terminal and deliver them to your cabin; Asuka describes exactly this. We found no independent porter service at either Kobe terminal. The port’s “Omotenashi Crew”, a hospitality team in happi coats, help passengers with directions and information.

Where to stay the night before

There are no hotel recommendations here: we have not stayed in them, and we take no commissions. What matters is the district.

District Why Morning to the ship From the airports Yamato same-day?
Sannomiya (Chuo) Both airport buses terminate here. Every rail line meets here. Most rooms Port Terminal: Port Liner 5 min, ¥210. Naka Pier: taxi about 8 min KIX bus 65 min; Itami bus 40 min Yes
Meriken Park, Harborland, Motomachi (Chuo) Shortest walk to Naka Pier. The Naka Pier terminal shares its building with a hotel Naka Pier: on foot or a 4-minute taxi. Port Terminal: taxi 6–7 min (our estimate) Bus to Sannomiya, then taxi Yes
Shin-Kobe (Chuo) Shinkansen arrivals. The KIX bus stops at a hotel here About 20 min, ¥420, to Port Terminal; Port Loop bus to Naka Pier KIX bus about 75 min Yes
Port Island (Chuo) On the Port Liner line between Kobe Airport and Port Terminal Port Liner, a few stops Bay Shuttle and Port Liner, no city traffic Yes
Osaka (Umeda) Most choice; an evening in Osaka JR to Sannomiya 21–27 min (¥420), then Port Liner. Allow an hour door to door with bags — Osaka-ward hotels only

Our pick, as editorial judgement: Sannomiya if your ship uses Port Terminal; the Meriken Park and Motomachi waterfront if it uses Naka Pier. If you are not sure until the week before, choose Sannomiya: it is within a short taxi ride of both.

Check-in, what opens when, and what the terminals have

  • Check-in time is set by your line and printed in your boarding documents. Asuka Cruise says check-in for its Japanese cruises usually runs from about two hours to ninety minutes before departure. International lines give each passenger a time slot. Bring your boarding pass and passport.
  • Border control. The city lists customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) facilities at both terminals, so on a voyage that leaves Japan, departure formalities happen in the building.
  • Inside. Port Terminal has a 2,500-person hall, a lobby, an information desk and an automatic currency-exchange machine. Naka Pier has a lobby, check-in counters and an information corner on 2F. Both have barrier-free boarding bridges.
  • Food and cash. We found no food outlets listed inside either terminal. Port Terminal has nothing close: the nearest convenience stores are 600–800 m away by our map check, so eat and use an ATM in Sannomiya first. Naka Pier is a short walk from the Meriken Park waterfront and Harborland, and convenience-store ATMs are 650–750 m away. Seven Bank machines in 7-Eleven generally take foreign cards.
  • Wi-Fi. It is not on the city’s facility list for either terminal, and we could not confirm it. Have your own data.
  • Parking. Port Terminal: 119 spaces, ¥160 an hour, ¥960 maximum per calendar day, no reservations. Naka Pier: 133 spaces, ¥210 per 30 minutes, capped only overnight (¥840, 20:00–08:00). Both cash only, no ¥5,000 or ¥10,000 notes.

Passes, IC cards and cash

  • The Port Liner takes IC cards (ICOCA, PiTaPa and the other national cards) and contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover and UnionPay. Tap the same card in and out, with one card per person. Contactless bank cards are charged the adult fare even for children, so give children an IC card or a paper ticket. Its ticket machines do not sell tickets on credit cards.
  • The Itami bus takes IC cards and contactless bank cards. The KIX bus sells tickets from machines at the stop. The Bay Shuttle takes yen and the main credit cards.
  • The Port Loop bus takes cash or IC cards; the fare is ¥230.
  • The Kansai Area Pass is gone. JR West stopped selling it on 30 September 2026, though passes already bought stay valid. It never covered the Port Liner, the airport buses or the ferry. For a Kobe turnaround, an IC card or contactless card is all you need.
  • Cash. The terminal lockers take ¥100 coins only, and both terminal car parks are cash only. Carry ¥10,000–20,000 if a long taxi ride is in your plan.

Flying in from overseas the day before

  • Arrive at least the day before. One delay on embarkation day can end the plan.
  • Pre-register on Visit Japan Web (the Digital Agency’s service) for immigration and customs. Japan Customs publishes the duty-free allowances and the rules on restricted items, including some medicines.
  • Immigration time. We have no official queue figure for KIX. Plan as if it can take an hour or more at busy times.
  • Jet lag. In our judgement, two nights before embarkation is kinder than one after a flight from the US, UK or Australia. Embarkation day means luggage, queues and a safety drill. Do it on your second Japanese morning, not your first.

Timeline: embarkation day

This assumes a hotel in Sannomiya, a Japanese-style 17:00 departure from Naka Pier and a line-assigned check-in at 14:30. For Port Terminal, swap the taxi for the Port Liner. Move every step to fit your own documents.

Time Step
09:00 Breakfast. Pack so that one small bag holds what you need until your checked bags reach the cabin
11:00 Check out. Most hotels will hold bags if you want lunch first
12:30 Lunch in Sannomiya or Motomachi, and an ATM stop. Do not count on food at the terminal
14:00 Taxi to Naka Pier (about 8 min, roughly ¥1,000–1,500 by our estimate). For Port Terminal: Port Liner two stops, ¥210, trains every few minutes
14:15 Arrive. Hand checked bags to the line’s staff
14:30 Check-in at your assigned time, then security, immigration if the voyage leaves Japan, and boarding over the bridge
Afternoon Safety drill on board. Checked bags usually reach the cabin during the afternoon or early evening

If you fly in on the day: from KIX, the latest workable connection is the 11:50 bus to the Bay Shuttle (Kobe Airport 12:36, Port Terminal about 13:00), and only if the flight is on time. We do not recommend it.

Timeline: disembarkation day

Our assumptions: you are off the ship and out of the terminal by 09:00, which suits an international ship due in at 06:30–08:00. The Japanese ships ending voyages in Kobe in late 2026 are due alongside at 09:00. On those, assume you are out by about 10:30 and move everything later. If your ship comes from a foreign port, arrival immigration happens in Kobe and takes extra time.

Time Step
09:00 Off the ship with your bags
09:05 To Kobe Airport: Port Liner from Port Terminal, 13 min, ¥290. From Naka Pier, a taxi (our estimate about ¥3,500–4,000 on the meter)
09:15 To KIX by taxi: Kobe MK’s pre-booked fixed fare from central Kobe is ¥22,000–23,000 plus about ¥2,050 tolls. We estimate 60–75 minutes
09:35 To KIX by ferry: Port Liner from Port Terminal (09:35 → Kobe Airport 09:48), Bay Shuttle 10:00, KIX pier 10:31, Terminal 1 departures floor 10:40. ¥1,880 plus ¥290
10:05 To Itami by bus from Sannomiya (after the Port Liner or a taxi), arriving 10:45. The 09:15 bus is possible only if you are very quick off a Port Terminal ship
Any time To KIX by bus from Sannomiya: about 65 min, ¥2,200. The operator warns that buses before 09:00 are busy and you may not get the one you want

Earliest realistic flights, on those assumptions:

Airport and mode Book no earlier than
Kobe Airport (domestic), Port Liner from Port Terminal About 11:00
Itami (domestic), bus or taxi About 11:30
KIX international, Bay Shuttle or fixed-fare taxi About 13:30
KIX international, limousine bus from Sannomiya About 14:00

These are our estimates. They allow for airline check-in margins and a cushion for a late gangway. On a Japanese ship due in at 09:00, add about an hour and a half. On a ship arriving from abroad, add more. If you are staying another night, take the Port Liner or a taxi to a Sannomiya hotel. Then send your bags to the airport with Yamato two days before you fly.

Mistakes passengers make here

We could not read forum threads directly (Cruise Critic blocks automated access), so these are not quotations. They are the mistakes the official facts make predictable. Treat them as editorial and anecdotal.

  1. Going to the terminal beside Port Tower because that is where the photos are taken. International ships almost all use Port Terminal, 1.3 km away. Japanese lines starting a voyage usually use Naka Pier. Read your documents.
  2. Expecting the Port Liner to reach Naka Pier. It does not. Get off at Sannomiya and take a taxi, or use the subway or Port Loop bus.
  3. Missing the last ferry. The Bay Shuttle’s 23:50 sailing has no Port Liner connection and no taxi stand at the other end. After about 21:50 at T1, take the bus to Sannomiya instead.
  4. Booking same-day luggage delivery from KIX to a Kobe hotel. The KIX counter does not offer it. Itami, Kobe Airport and the Osaka counters do.
  5. Arriving at a terminal locker with ¥1,000 notes. The lockers take ¥100 coins only, and there is no change machine.
  6. Planning a 10:00 flight from KIX after disembarking. Even the fastest route puts you in the departures hall at about 10:40.
  7. Buying a Kansai Area Pass on old advice. Sales ended on 30 September 2026, and it never covered the Port Liner or the ferry.
  8. Assuming Kobe and Osaka are the same port. They are separate, about 22 km apart. Read the port name on the ticket, not the region in the cruise title.

For the day itself, including Kyoto from the ship and what fits in a short call, see the Kobe cruise port guide. If your ship actually starts across the bay, the Osaka embarkation guide covers Tempozan.

Questions this raises

Which terminal do cruises start and end at in Kobe?

It depends on the ship. Kobe has two cruise terminals: Kobe Port Terminal on Shinko Pier No.4, and Naka Pier Cruise Terminal beside Port Tower. On the official schedule for October to December 2026, every call marked as starting or ending a voyage in Kobe is a Japanese-market ship (Asuka II, Asuka III or Mitsui Ocean Sakura) at Naka Pier. International lines use Port Terminal for every call in the same period except one (Silver Moon, at Naka Pier on 5–6 October). Earlier in 2026, though, Asuka II turned around at Port Terminal in March, so the split is a pattern, not a rule. If you join or leave an international ship here, expect Port Terminal, but check your documents and the port's schedule.

How do I get from Kansai Airport (KIX) to the Kobe cruise terminal?

The Bay Shuttle ferry is the quickest. A free bus takes you from KIX to the pier, the crossing to Kobe Airport takes about 31 minutes, and the ¥1,880 ticket with the Port Liner fare included takes you on to Port Terminal station, 13 minutes up the line. Allow about 70–80 minutes in total. The other option is the airport limousine bus to Sannomiya: ¥2,200 and about 65 minutes, then the Port Liner (¥210) or a short taxi.

How do I get from Itami (Osaka International Airport) to the Kobe cruise terminal?

Take the airport bus to Kobe Sannomiya: ¥1,200, about 40 minutes, with departures from Itami from 07:50 to 21:15. It takes IC cards and contactless bank cards. From Sannomiya, take the Port Liner two stops to Port Terminal (¥210), or a taxi to Naka Pier (the city gives about 8 minutes). By rail it is about an hour with two changes. One taxi company publishes a pre-booked fixed fare of ¥11,500–12,500 to central Kobe, plus tolls.

How do I get from Shin-Kobe (Shinkansen) to the cruise terminal?

To Port Terminal: the subway one stop to Sannomiya (2 minutes, ¥210), a short walk, then the Port Liner two stops (¥210). That is about 20 minutes and ¥420 in all. To Naka Pier: the Port Loop bus from Shin-Kobe to Meriken Park (¥230, about every 20–25 minutes from 09:25 on weekdays, about 28 minutes), or a taxi, which the city puts at about 12 minutes.

What time can I book my flight home after a Kobe cruise?

Our assumption is that you are off the ship and out of the terminal by 09:00. On that basis, book no earlier than about 11:00 for a domestic flight from Kobe Airport and 11:30 from Itami. From KIX, an international flight should leave no earlier than about 13:30 if you take the Bay Shuttle or a taxi. Japanese ships ending a voyage in Kobe in late 2026 are due in at 09:00, so on those add about an hour and a half.

Can I send my luggage to my Kobe hotel from the airport?

From Itami, Kobe Airport, Kyoto and the main Osaka station counters, yes. Yamato's same-day service delivers to hotels in Kobe's Chuo, Hyogo, Kita, Nagata, Suma, Tarumi and Nishi wards. Cut-off is 11:30 at the airports and Osaka counters, delivery is from 20:00, and the fee is the standard rate plus ¥550–1,100. From KIX, no: the KIX counter's same-day hotel delivery covers Osaka and Kyoto city hotels only.

Where should I stay the night before a Kobe cruise?

Sannomiya, for most people. The KIX and Itami airport buses terminate there, Port Terminal is two Port Liner stops away, and it is in Chuo ward, so Yamato delivers there on the same day. If your ship uses Naka Pier, the waterfront by Meriken Park and Motomachi is shortest; the terminal is in the same building as a hotel. If you arrive by Shinkansen and leave by Shinkansen, Shin-Kobe works too.

Are there luggage lockers at the Kobe cruise terminals?

Yes, but there are few and they take ¥100 coins only, and neither terminal has a change machine. Port Terminal has 13 lockers on 3F, of which 4 are large. Naka Pier has 20 on 2F, of which 5 are large. Both charge ¥600 a day for large (113 × 46 × 69 cm), ¥500 for medium and ¥200 for small, with another day's fee each time midnight passes. At both terminals the lockers can only be used while the terminal is open, and they cannot be reserved.

Is there food, an ATM or Wi-Fi at the Kobe cruise terminal?

Port Terminal has an information desk and an automatic currency-exchange machine, but nothing close by. The nearest convenience stores are 600–800 m away, so use the ATMs at Sannomiya first. Naka Pier has an information corner and shares its building with a hotel; convenience-store ATMs are 650–750 m away. Wi-Fi is not listed for either terminal on the city's page. We could not confirm it, so do not count on it.

Can I park at the Kobe cruise terminal?

Both terminals have car parks, according to the City of Kobe. Port Terminal's has 119 spaces, open 24 hours, at ¥160 an hour with a maximum of ¥960 a day (the cap resets at midnight), so about ¥6,700 for a week by our arithmetic. It cannot be reserved and can fill on big-ship days. Naka Pier's (133 spaces, under the hotel) charges ¥210 per 30 minutes, capped at ¥840 only overnight (20:00–08:00), so a week there costs far more. Both are cash only and take no ¥5,000 or ¥10,000 notes.

What time does check-in open at the Kobe cruise terminal?

Your line sets it, and your boarding documents give your time. Asuka Cruise, for example, tells passengers that check-in for its Japanese cruises usually runs from about two hours to about ninety minutes before departure. The city lists Port Terminal as open from 8:30 to 17:30 and Naka Pier from 8:00 to 22:30, with both hours changed to suit ship calls. Do not arrive hours early.

Is the Kansai Area Pass worth buying for a Kobe cruise?

You can no longer buy it. JR West stopped selling the Kansai Area Pass on 30 September 2026, though passes bought before then stay valid. It never covered the Port Liner, the airport buses or the Bay Shuttle, which are the legs that matter here. An IC card or a contactless bank card covers the trains and the Port Liner.
