The story

Why Kushiro Marsh is famous

Kushiro Marsh is Japan's largest wetland, 28,000 hectares, and the country's first Ramsar site in 1980. It was saved because it was thought useless for farming. It is the breeding ground of the red-crowned crane, which was believed extinct in Japan until about twenty were found here in 1924.
