Japan’s towering realist photographer left his life’s work to his hometown — about 135,000 works in a modernist lakeside building worth the ride on its own. Adults ¥900 from 17 October 2026 to 17 January 2027; open daily to the end of November, 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30).

Why Ken Domon Photography Museum is famous
Ken Domon was the leading Japanese documentary photographer of the twentieth century, born in Sakata, and he gave the city his entire archive, about 135,000 works. The museum built for it in 1983 is by Yoshio Taniguchi, with a courtyard sculpture by Isamu Noguchi and a garden by Hiroshi Teshigahara.
