Why Sankyo Warehouses is famous
Rice warehouses built in 1893 that stored rice for 129 years, until September 2022, with a double roof and a line of zelkova trees planted along the back specifically to shade the north wall and keep the grain cool. Sakata was the port where the Mogami river met the sea route to Osaka, and this is what that trade built.
Sankyo Soko is the image of Sakata: nine white-walled storehouses built in 1893 as a rice store, under a double roof that helps control humidity, with 35 zelkova trees more than 150 years old planted in front. The tourism association calls it the symbol of the Shonai rice region, and it became a national historic site on 26 March 2021.
The warehouses stopped serving as active rice storage in September 2022 after 129 years, so what you come for now is the view: the long line of white walls and the trees. The trees change with the seasons, and the association says autumn colour peaks in late October. The shop-and-restaurant complex that used to occupy buildings 11 and 12 moved to Iroha-gura Park in March 2025.
The catch is that it is a look, not a visit: it is free, flat and photogenic, and it takes under an hour. It is also about 6 km from the berth, so a cruise passenger depends on the ship's shuttle or a taxi to reach it, and the Rice History Museum in building 1 is closed. Skip it only if the shuttle is not running; otherwise it is the first stop on any Sakata day.
Things worth knowing
- Look at the trees in late October: the tourism association says autumn colour peaks then.
- The information centre is open 9:00–16:30, but the exterior is open all day, so an early call loses nothing.
- Ask the ship's shuttle desk for the drop point: it is not published, and Sankyo is a short walk from the old-town cluster.
- A pre-booked taxi or guide entering the quay by the staff gate needs a city permit applied for three working days ahead, so book through the ship or a licensed operator.
