Somaya, a high-class restaurant for over a century, restored as Somaro in 2000, where Sakata maiko dance in the afternoon — the rare place outside Kyoto to see it, at a fraction of Kyoto’s price. Usually closed on Wednesdays, but it opens for ships on cruise days and sets that day’s show times; check somaro.net for your date and book before you sail (2 or more people).

Why Somaro maiko performance is famous

A restored 1890s teahouse where maiko perform a short dance most afternoons at two. Sakata's wealth supported an entertainment quarter that vanished almost everywhere else in northern Japan. The building itself is a registered Tangible Cultural Property and the performance is the reason to time your day.
