Photo: 運動会プロテインパワー / CC BY-SA 4.0Sakata Kaisen Ichiba is a seafood hall beside the regular ferry terminal in the harbour. The city page lists a fishmonger selling Shonai-coast fish on the ground floor, a sushi restaurant, Wan, that cooks fish bought from that fishmonger, and upstairs Kaisen Donya Tobishima, whose seafood bowls and boat platters come with a view of Sakata port. Tobishima opens at 7:00, when most sights in town are still shut.
Tobishima's signature dishes, per the tourism association, are a kaisen-don, a limited-quantity funamori-zen boat-style sashimi set, ikura-don, uni-ikura-don and crab-don, with ingredients depending on the day's catch. Across the road, the Minato Ichiba holds shops selling local sake, souvenirs, fresh fish and a wonton-noodle canteen.
The catch is the clock and the cash. Tobishima closes between the morning and midday sessions, takes no cards, and publishes no prices. On Wednesdays most Minato Ichiba shops are closed. It is also well away from the old town (about 1 km on foot from Sankyo by OpenStreetMap routing), so make it a lunch stop on the loop or a taxi, not a long walk.
Five things the plaques won't tell you
- Bring cash: the tourism page lists credit cards as not accepted at Tobishima.
- Do not arrive between 9:00 and 11:00: the restaurant is between sessions (the tourism association says the morning ends at 9:30, the market's own site 9:00).
- Wednesdays are weak: most Minato Ichiba shops across the road close on Wednesdays, though Tobishima states no weekly closed day.
- Phone numbers are on the listings if your guide wants to check hours: Tobishima 0234-26-6111, and Sugawara fishmonger 0234-23-5522.
- There is parking for about 300 cars and large coaches, so the market is a coach-friendly lunch stop.
