Why we send people here

The one sight you can walk to from the big-ship berth. A Pure Land temple whose main hall of 1795 and great hall of 1653 became National Treasures in December 2022. 9:00–16:30, ¥500. Closed to visitors 13–17 November 2026.

Why it earns the hours
  • Short enough to be certain of: 1 hr 40 min door to door, so even a tender day works.
Before you count on it
  • Closed to visitors 13–17 November 2026. Check the day before you plan around it.
The story

Why Shokoji temple, on foot from the wharf is famous

Shokoji began in 1471 as a temple of the Pure Land reformer Rennyo. It moved to its present site at Fushiki in 1584. It grew under the Maeda lords of Kaga through the Edo period. A repair programme begun in 1998 took more than twenty years. In December 2022 the main hall of 1795 and the great hall of 1653 were designated National Treasures. The other ten buildings are Important Cultural Properties.

Where it is

Shokoji temple, on foot from the wharf and your ship

Both pins on one map, so the distance is a fact rather than a feeling.

The arithmetic

Where the 1 hr 40 min goes

Counted from the moment you step off the gangway. The hour before all-aboard is not in this bar; it is already set aside.

Out25 minAbout 2 km / 25 min on foot from the Manyo wharf
There50 minWhat you came for
Back25 minTo the gangway

25 minutes each way is the measured figure for about 2 km / 25 min on foot from the manyo wharf, not the optimistic one. If your ship is late, cut the 50 min in the middle. Never cut the hour at the end.
