What Fushiki–Toyama isFushiki–Toyama is three ports in one bay: the cargo wharf at Fushiki where the big ships dock, the small-ship berth at Shinminato beside a 1930 sailing ship, and Toyama city 25 km away. Takaoka, the town behind the wharf, was founded by the Maeda lords in 1609 and still casts bronze; its temple Zuiryuji is a National Treasure. Across the water stand the 3,000-metre Tateyama peaks, the reason the ships come, visible only when the weather allows.

Why people sail here
The three reasons to get off the ship in Fushiki–Toyama
Toyama city: the glass museum and the cherry-blossom boats
Kengo Kuma's TOYAMA Kirari building holds the Glass Art Museum (permanent collection ¥200) and, 10 minutes away in the castle park, the Matsukawa boats run under the cherry trees from 20 March to 25 April 2027 if the plan holds.
From the shipTakaoka Station to Toyama Station by Ainokaze Toyama Railway, ¥390, about 20 minutes; then a tram of about 12 minutes to Grand Plaza-mae.

Why Fushiki–Toyama is worth getting off the ship for
Ships come to this bay for a view. Across Toyama Bay, on the days the weather allows, stand the 3,000-metre peaks of the Tateyama range, still white in April and October. The classic place to see them is the Amaharashi Coast, 3 km from the big-ship wharf. Onna-iwa rock sits in the shallows, the Himi-line train runs along the shore, and the mountains stand behind.
Behind the wharf is Takaoka, a castle town founded in 1609 by the Maeda lords of Kanazawa, which has cast bronze ever since. Its temple, Zuiryuji, has three National Treasure buildings; its Daibutsu is a bronze Buddha the town's own founders finished in 1933. Twenty-five kilometres east, Toyama city has Kengo Kuma's glass museum and, in early April, boats under the cherry trees of the castle park.
What this port is not: a walk-off port. The big ships dock at a cargo wharf with no terminal, no shops and no ATM. The mountains are hidden on most wet days, and this is one of Japan's wettest cities.
This guide is built from the prefecture's call lists, the railways' timetables, the official taxi tariff and the sights' own hours. Everything was checked on 9 October 2026.
First: which berth are you at?
Two berths, 8 km apart, and the official lists for 2023–2026 show a clear rule. Every ship over about 32,000 tons went to Fushiki; the small ships went to Shinminato.

Seabourn Quest, at 32,477 tons, went to Fushiki, so the line is not a simple tonnage rule; the prefecture announces the berth for each call. Of the eight 2026 calls, five used Fushiki and three used Shinminato.
For 2027 the prefecture has not yet published a list; it usually appears in late December. Every Westerdam call since 2024 has used Manyo No. 3, so plan on it and check the daily programme the night before.
On ship days Takaoka City and the prefecture close the wharf compound, part of the Manyo Wharf green space and some port roads. There are no public ship tours. The road to Fushiki Station passes through the cordon, so follow the marshals; nobody who is not a passenger can meet you at the gangway.
Getting from Manyo No. 3 into Takaoka and Toyama
Everything starts with the 8.5 km to Takaoka Station, and there are only three ways to cover it. The ship's shuttle, where it exists, is paid. Princess's 2026 port sheet says wharf to Takaoka Station front, fare announced on board; a 2024 passenger paid US$22. Holland America's arrangement is not published anywhere we could find.

Road times are our estimates from map routing without traffic, so add a quarter to a half. Taxi fares are the distance-only floor of the official Toyama tariff (¥600 for the first 0.93 km, then ¥100 per 195 m), without waiting time. Train fares are the operators'.
Hourly taxi hire is ¥4,400 per 30 minutes, which four people sharing may find simpler than three separate rides.
The Himi line is the only public transport from the wharf, and it is sparse. Weekday trains from Fushiki towards Takaoka leave at 08:39, 09:11, 09:45, 10:38, 12:13, 13:02, 14:40 and 16:25 on the October 2026 timetable, with gaps of up to 95 minutes. Coming back, the 15:23 from Takaoka reaches Fushiki at 15:36 and the 16:22 at 16:35; the next is 17:25. ICOCA, Suica and the other national IC cards work at all seven Himi-line stations since 14 March 2026.
Ainokaze Toyama Railway runs Takaoka to Toyama Station for ¥390, about 20 minutes, and takes the same IC cards. You cannot buy an IC card with a credit card there, and you charge it in ¥1,000 units with cash.
From the Kaiwo Berth
Small ships berth beside Kaiwomaru Park, and the day is on foot and by tram. The Manyosen tram leaves the Kaiwomaru stop, about 10 minutes' walk from the park, every 15 minutes from 06:24. It reaches Takaoka Station in 45 minutes (09:09 to 09:54, for instance) and comes back in 47.
Its fare table is published only as an image, so we do not quote it. A one-day pass costs ¥900 on board, and a pass plus Kaiwomaru boarding is ¥1,200. It takes national IC cards or cash on exit; no credit-card option is published.

Fushiki to the Tateyama view: Amaharashi on a clear morning
The view is the port's reason for being, and it is cheap and close. Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi, the road station on the coast, has an observation deck on its second and third floors, open at all hours. The café and shop open 9:00–17:00, every day.
From the Fushiki wharf it is a taxi of about 4 minutes and ¥1,800. Amaharashi Station is 5–6 minutes' walk from the deck. Trains on to Takaoka (¥240, about 20 minutes) leave at 09:03, 09:38, 10:30, 12:05, 12:55, 14:32 and 16:17.
The catch is the weather. Toyama records 2,374 mm of rain a year, about 1.5 times Tokyo's, and the mountains disappear on wet days. April and May are the driest and sunniest months, which puts the 6 April Westerdam call and the late-April Azamara calls in the best window.
Even so, visibility on any given morning is a coin toss. Look east across the bay from the deck at breakfast. If the peaks are out, go to the coast first; the clear-morning model day below is built for that. If not, give the morning to Takaoka and the museums.
The same range shows over the port from the Shinminato Bridge walkway (Ainokaze Promenade), free, under the road deck, with lifts at both ends. It opens 6:00–21:00 from May to October and 6:00–20:00 from November to April, and closes in strong wind.
Zuiryuji and Takaoka's old town
Zuiryuji is a 10-minute walk south of Takaoka Station, or about 17 minutes and ¥5,100 by taxi from the wharf. The Maeda family built it in 1663 as the mortuary temple of Toshinaga, the lord who founded Takaoka; the gate, the Buddha hall and the lecture hall were designated National Treasures in 1997. It opens 9:00–16:30 with last entry at 16:00 (closing 16:00 from 10 December to 31 January). Admission is ¥500, with no senior rate; plan on 45–60 minutes. Volunteer guides can be requested in advance through the temple's site, and the covered corridors make it the best rain option in Takaoka.
The Takaoka Daibutsu, a bronze Buddha cast by the town's own foundersPhoto: くろふね / CC BY 3.0
The Takaoka Daibutsu, a bronze seated Buddha finished in 1933, is free. It sits beside the Manyosen's Sakashita-machi stop, four stops and 7 minutes from Takaoka Station, or 0.65 km on foot. It opens 9:00–17:00, with occasional irregular closures. Two minutes further by tram is Katahara-machi, the stop for Yamachosuji, the merchant street of earthen-walled storehouses and the museum of the Mikurumayama festival floats.
Kanaya-machi, the casting quarter founded in 1611, is about 10 minutes from the station by Kaetsuno bus: stone paving, latticed house fronts, and the Casting Museum (9:00–16:30, ¥300). Do not confuse Takaoka Station with Shin-Takaoka, the Shinkansen station 10 minutes away by taxi. The tram, the Ainokaze line and the Himi line all use Takaoka.
Near the wharf itself, Shokoji is the one sight on foot, about 2 km and 25 minutes. It is a Pure Land temple whose main hall of 1795 and great hall of 1653 became National Treasures in December 2022. It opens 9:00–16:30 from March to November, ¥500, and is closed to visitors on 13–17 November 2026.
The Fushiki Kitamaebune Museum, 10 minutes' walk from Fushiki Station, is ¥300 (¥240 at 65 and over), 9:00–16:30, closed Tuesdays.
Toyama city by train: the glass museum, the castle park and the Matsukawa boats
Inside the Toyama Glass Art Museum: the timber-lined interior and escalators of Kengo Kuma's TOYAMA Kirari buildingPhoto: 極地狐 / CC BY 2.0
Toyama city is 25 km from the wharf and a ¥390, 20-minute train ride from Takaoka, so it belongs to the long calls. The Glass Art Museum shares Kengo Kuma's TOYAMA Kirari building with the city library. It opens 9:30–18:00 (entry to 17:30); the permanent collection is ¥200, special exhibitions are priced per show, and Dale Chihuly's Glass Art Garden is included in the ¥200.
It closes on the first and third Wednesdays, and the café every Wednesday. From Toyama Station the tram takes about 12 minutes to Grand Plaza-mae, then 2 minutes on foot.
Toyama Castle Park is a free park about 10–15 minutes' walk from the station, around a rebuilt keep that houses the Folk Museum (¥210). Inside the park, the Matsukawa Chaya sells tickets for the Matsukawa river boats: 30 minutes under the cherry trees. The 2026 fare was ¥3,000 while the blossom was out and ¥2,000 otherwise; 2027 fares are not yet published.
There are no individual reservations, and in 2026 the boats did not run on Mondays or the day after a holiday.
The 2027 spring season is planned for 20 March to 25 April. Toyama's full bloom is normally 8 April, so the 6 April Westerdam call lands inside both. The 2026 departures were 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00; check the 2027 list before you plan around one.
Lunch is in the station: Shiroebi-tei for white-shrimp tempura over rice (11:00–21:00), Nishicho Taiki's branch for Toyama Black ramen, Minamoto's kiosk for a masu-zushi box. Further east, the Hotaruika Museum at Namerikawa runs live firefly-squid light shows from 20 March to late May, ¥820. It is 8 minutes' walk from Namerikawa Station, about 15 minutes and ¥390 by Ainokaze from Toyama. It is 38 km from the wharf and realistic only with a car on a long call.
Shinminato: the Kaiwomaru, the bridge walkway and the fish market
Shinminato is where the small ships dock and where the big-ship passengers come by taxi, 7–8 km and about ¥4,000. The Kaiwomaru is a four-masted training barque of 1930, moored in a free park beside the Kaiwo Berth. Boarding is 9:30–17:00 (last boarding 30 minutes before), ¥500 for adults since April 2026, and it is closed every Wednesday.
About 30 minutes on deck is enough. Ten full-sail days a year are announced in advance; 2025 managed four of them because of weather, and the 2027 dates are not yet published.
The Kittokito Ichiba market, 0.8 km away, is open 9:00–17:00 (closed only on 1 January) with restaurants inside and crab in season. The draw is the midday auction at the fishing port next door, free to watch from about 12:30. It is five minutes' walk from the Higashi-Shinminato tram stop. It is not held on Sundays, Wednesdays or port holidays.
The Shinminato Bridge walkway is a short walk from the park, 2 minutes from the Koshinokata tram stop. Along the Uchikawa canal in the old town, a kimono-and-matcha shop sits a minute from Kawa no Eki Shinminato. It is the one Viator listing on foot from the small-ship berth.
Gokayama, Shirakawa-go and the Alpine Route: ship tour or not at all
The World Heritage villages of Gokayama, Ainokura and Suganuma, are 54 km from the wharf. That is 52 minutes by free-flow routing, about 70 in practice, each way. A taxi that far is about ¥28,000 each way at the tariff floor.
The World Heritage Bus from Takaoka Station sells a two-day ticket for ¥2,800 to Gokayama (¥4,000 to Shirakawa-go) and takes contactless credit cards. It runs only a few times a day and takes about 80 minutes; its timetable is published as an image.
On a 10-hour call Gokayama fits by private car or ship tour (Holland America's Inami and Gokayama coach is about 5 hours), and then little else fits. Shirakawa-go is 73 km each way and belongs to the ship's coach.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is the thing most asked about and the thing least possible. It opens in mid-April (15 April to 30 November in 2026; 2027 not yet announced), so the 6 April 2027 call cannot use it. From Fushiki it is 47 km to Tateyama Station before five changes of transport up to Murodo.
The one catalogue tour that goes there is a 10-hour bus day from Toyama Station needing a 13-hour call, longer than any published here.
The best things to do in Fushiki–Toyama on a port day
Our full list, with the time each takes from the berth, is on the Fushiki–Toyama top 10. In brief:
Takaoka then Toyama by train: the 10-hour Westerdam day
Fits the 08:00–18:00 Westerdam call on Tuesday 6 April 2027 at Manyo No. 3 (the berth every Westerdam call has used since 2024; the 2027 allocation is not yet published), and any 10-hour-plus call there.
Takaoka's temple and old streets in the morning, Toyama city after lunch. Times assume 08:00 arrival and 18:00 departure, so all-aboard about 17:30 and our target back at the gangway 16:30. 6 April 2027 is a Tuesday, so no Wednesday closure applies.
08:30Off the ship. Ship shuttle to Takaoka Station (Princess: paid; Holland America: not published) or a taxi, 8.5 km, about 14 minutes and about ¥4,500.
09:00Zuiryuji (opens 9:00, ¥500), 10 minutes' walk south of the station. Allow an hour for the gate, the Buddha hall and the corridors.
10:00Back past the station to the Takaoka Daibutsu (free) and the Yamachosuji merchant street: Manyosen tram 4 stops to Sakashita-machi, or 0.65 km on foot.
11:30Ainokaze Toyama Railway Takaoka to Toyama, ¥390, about 20 minutes. IC cards work; charge them in ¥1,000 units with cash.
12:00Lunch inside Toyama Station: Shiroebi-tei for the white-shrimp tempura bowl (11:00–21:00), or Nishicho Taiki's station branch for Toyama Black ramen.
13:00Tram to Grand Plaza-mae, about 12 minutes, then 2 minutes to the Glass Art Museum (9:30–18:00; permanent collection ¥200). Thirty minutes is enough.
13:45Walk 10 minutes to Toyama Castle Park. Buy a Matsukawa boat ticket at the Matsukawa Chaya (¥3,000 while the blossom is out, no reservations) for the 14:00 sailing: 30 minutes under the trees.
15:00Walk 10 minutes back to Toyama Station; Ainokaze to Takaoka, arriving about 15:30.
15:35Shuttle or taxi back to the wharf, about 20 minutes.
16:00Back at the gangway, 30 minutes ahead of target. Rail for the day: ¥390 + about ¥240 + ¥390, about ¥1,020, plus the shuttle or taxi at each end.
Amaharashi first: the clear-morning day for Takaoka and Shinminato
Fits the 10-hour Westerdam call (08:00–18:00) at Manyo No. 3. On Diamond Princess's 9-hour 09:00 call, or any 8-hour call, see the note. Only on a morning when the range is visible across the bay.
Decide at breakfast. If the Tateyama peaks are out, the view does not wait for the afternoon, so go to the coast before anything else. Times assume 08:00–18:00, target gangway 16:30. It is a taxi day: three rides, about ¥12,600 at the tariff floor.
08:30Off the ship. Taxi to Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi, 3 km, about 4 minutes and about ¥1,800. The deck is open all hours; Onna-iwa rock and the peaks are in front of you.
09:30Walk 5–6 minutes to Amaharashi Station for the 09:38 Himi-line train to Takaoka (¥240, about 20 minutes). The 09:03 is the earlier option.
10:00Zuiryuji (¥500), 10 minutes' walk from Takaoka Station: an hour inside.
11:00The Takaoka Daibutsu (free) and a short walk along Yamachosuji, back to the station by 11:45.
11:45Taxi Takaoka Station to Kittokito Ichiba, 12 km, about ¥6,500 (the official worked example to the park next door is ¥6,700). The Manyosen tram takes about 43 minutes to Higashi-Shinminato if you prefer.
12:30The midday fish auction at the fishing port beside the market: free, from about 12:30, not Sundays or Wednesdays. Then lunch inside the market (9:00–17:00).
14:00Kaiwomaru Park, 0.8 km on foot: board the 1930 barque (¥500, closed Wednesdays), then the Shinminato Bridge walkway (free, lifts at both ends) for the mountains over the port.
15:15Taxi to the Fushiki wharf, 8 km, about 15 minutes and about ¥4,300.
15:45Back at the gangway, 45 minutes ahead of target.
Shinminato on foot, Takaoka by tram: an 8-hour small-ship day from the Kaiwo Berth
Fits Azamara Pursuit's 08:00–16:00 calls at the Kaiwo Berth (27 April 2027, and the 2026 pattern) and any other small ship sent to Shinminato.
The small-ship berth is the easy one: the sailing ship, the bridge and the fish market are on foot, and the Manyosen tram runs every 15 minutes to Takaoka. Times assume 08:00–16:00, all-aboard about 15:30, target gangway 14:30.
08:20Off the ship. The Shinminato Bridge walkway (Ainokaze Promenade) is 2 minutes from Koshinokata tram stop: free, lifts at both ends, open from 6:00. Mountains over the port if the air is clear.
08:55Walk about 10 minutes from the park to the Kaiwomaru tram stop. Trams run every 15 minutes; the 09:09 reaches Takaoka Station at 09:54. IC cards or cash on exit; credit cards are not listed.
10:05Zuiryuji (¥500), 10 minutes' walk from the station, until about 11:00.
11:10Back to the station; a coffee or a masu-zushi box from the station shops if you want lunch early.
11:30Manyosen tram towards Koshinokata, about 43 minutes to Higashi-Shinminato, 5 minutes' walk from the fishing port.
12:30The midday auction (not Sundays or Wednesdays), then lunch inside Kittokito Ichiba: crab in season, white shrimp, masu-zushi.
13:35Walk 0.8 km to Kaiwomaru Park and board the barque (¥500; last boarding 30 minutes before the 17:00 close; closed Wednesdays). Thirty minutes on deck.
14:15Back at the gangway beside the park, 15 minutes ahead of target.
How to think about your hours
Work backwards from the ship. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure (check the daily programme), and you want to be at the gangway an hour before that. The first half hour after arrival goes on clearance and getting off. So the time you can use is the call length minus about two hours.
From Fushiki, every plan below also assumes the paid shuttle or a taxi to Takaoka Station. The Himi line's gaps make it a plan of its own.

For 2027 the lines' pages show Westerdam on 6 April (08:00–18:00), Diamond Princess on 15 April (10:00–18:00) and Azamara Pursuit on 27 April (08:00–16:00). The list is on cruises to Fushiki–Toyama; the Westerdam voyage is on the port-by-port journal.

5h+An hour or three with a guide, near where you already are
Both meet at the sight, not the ship. The temple hour suits anyone doing Takaoka by shuttle or taxi; the kimono morning is the one listing on foot from the small-ship berth.
9h+Gokayama by car, with the wharf pickup confirmed in writing
Gokayama is about 70 minutes each way by car from Fushiki, so a car tour is the only way it fits a day call. The record says it is designed for passengers arriving at Fushiki Port and lists 'Port Pickup', but its pickup places are Toyama hotels: confirm the wharf and the return time before you pay.
If your call is longer, or the day before or after the cruise
10h+The whole day handed to a guide, from the wharf
The Viator listing built around Fushiki Port, with the vehicle included. It fits the 10-hour Westerdam calls, not the 8-hour ones, unless the operator agrees a shorter day.
Tours are booked through Viator (a Tripadvisor company). If you book, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend — which is why each tour page has a "think twice" note.
About the return to the ship. The catalogue for this port is thin. Of eleven Viator listings, two name Fushiki Port: 92136P738 (private, up to 7, priced per person, vehicle included) and 452423P297 (Gokayama, 'Port Pickup' listed but Toyama hotels as pickup places). One says in so many words that meeting at Fushiki Port is excluded (92136P497).
The rest meet at Toyama Station, Toyama hotels or the sight itself, 25 km from the wharf. None of them promises an on-time return in writing, and the Alpine Route bus day needs a longer call than any ship has here. For most passengers the realistic choices are the ship's own excursions, listed below, or a shuttle-and-train or taxi day from this guide.
Whatever you book, tell the guide your all-aboard time at the start and agree the gangway an hour before it.
The ship's excursions: what Holland America sells at Toyama
Holland America's Toyama excursion pages (port code TOY) showed these tours on 9 October 2026, each marked activity level Moderate. Prices are 'starting at', in US dollars. No page names the berth or says how far the wharf is from anything.

The Tin Casting tour is the one that stays in Takaoka: the Nousaku foundry and the Wakatsuru brewery. The Inami and Gokayama coach is the cheapest way to a gassho village from this wharf. Shirakawa-go is about 1½ hours each way by coach and Kanazawa about 75 minutes, which is why the ship, not a taxi, is the way to reach them.
Princess and Seabourn sell their own programmes; Seabourn's half-day private car at Toyama was listed at US$1,500 per vehicle.
Money, cards and the practical stuff

There is no ATM at either berth, and no convenience store is mapped within 1.5 km of the Fushiki wharf. Fushiki Post Office is about 710 m from the wharf (counter Monday–Friday 9:00–17:00; ATM hours not published). Takaoka and Toyama Stations have 7-Eleven and Japan Post cash machines, which generally take foreign cards, so get cash there before the sights.
Tourist information. Takaoka Station has a tourist information desk on its second-floor concourse, according to a forum report; no desk on the wharf is published. The Fushiki Community Centre, which holds Japanese-culture welcome events on some ship days, has an information corner on its ground floor.
Closed days against the call dates. Wednesday is the day to watch: the Kaiwomaru, the fish auction, the Glass Art Museum (first and third Wednesdays) and Nishicho Taiki's main shop. In 2026 that caught Azamara Pursuit on 1 April, Asuka III on 29 April and Diamond Princess on 8 July; in 2027 it catches Mitsui Ocean Fuji on 5 May. The Kitamaebune Museum closes Tuesdays, which is the Westerdam's day on 6 April 2027. Shokoji is closed to visitors 13–17 November 2026, when no ship is in.
Food on the route. In Toyama Station: Shiroebi-tei (white-shrimp tempura bowl, 11:00–21:00), Nishicho Taiki's branch (Toyama Black ramen, 10:00–21:00) and Minamoto's masu-zushi kiosk. In Shinminato: the Kittokito market restaurants, 9:00–17:00. In Takaoka: restaurants around the station; the arcade has many shuttered shops, so do not count on choice. Toyama Bay Sushi, a prefecture-wide set of ten local pieces for ¥2,750–5,500, is sold at member sushi shops.
When to go: seasons and crowds
April is the window the ships use: highs of 17.6 °C, lows of 7.4 °C, 134 mm of rain and 174 hours of sunshine, the driest and sunniest month with May. Cherry blossom opens around 3 April and peaks around 8 April in a normal year, so the 6 April Westerdam call is at or just before full bloom.
October brings highs of 21.6 °C, 172 mm of rain and the Shinminato Hikiyama floats on the 1st. The ginkgo turns around 19 November and the maples around 24 November, after the last call.
Summer is wet and hot: July has 246 mm of rain and August highs of 31.4 °C. The Owara Kaze no Bon dancing in Yatsuo is 1–3 September, an evening event beyond any day call.
Typhoons approach the Hokuriku coast about 2.8 times a year, most often in September (about 1 a year), and a 2026 Azamara call at Maizuru the day after a Toyama call was cancelled for one.
Firefly squid fishing opens on 1 March and the Namerikawa museum's live shows run from 20 March to late May; white shrimp and snow crab (November to March) are the market's other seasons.
Rain plan: the Glass Art Museum, the Kittokito market hall, the castle museum, Zuiryuji's corridors and the Kaiwomaru's decks below (not Wednesdays). The bridge walkway closes in strong wind, and the sail-drills and the Matsukawa boat cancel in bad weather.
Winter has no calls: Toyama gets 253 cm of snow a year, most of it between December and February.
Mistakes we see passengers make
Expecting to dock in Toyama city. The big-ship berth is at Fushiki in Takaoka City, 25 km and about 36 minutes by road from Toyama Station. Even the small-ship berth at Shinminato is 18 km away.
Expecting a walk-off port.Manyo No. 3 has no terminal, shops or ATM, and the compound is closed to the public. The only sights within walking range are Shokoji temple (2 km) and the Kitamaebune Museum.
Assuming a free shuttle. No port authority publishes one. Princess's shuttle to Takaoka Station is paid (a 2024 passenger reported US$22), and Holland America's arrangement is not published. Budget for a taxi.
Relying on the Himi line.It runs roughly hourly from Fushiki Station with gaps of up to 95 minutes, and the station is a 20-minute walk from the wharf. A missed train costs the afternoon.
Turning up on a Wednesday. The Kaiwomaru is closed, the fish auction does not run, the Glass Art Museum closes on the first and third Wednesdays and Nishicho Taiki's main shop is shut. Build the day around Takaoka and Amaharashi instead.
Counting on the mountains.Toyama has 2,374 mm of rain a year, about 1.5 times Tokyo's. On a wet day there is nothing to see from Amaharashi; have the museum plan ready.
Booking the Alpine Route or Shirakawa-go on a day call. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route opens in mid-April (15 April in 2026) and is a full day from Toyama; a 6 April call cannot use it. Shirakawa-go is 73 km each way.
Researched from official timetables, operators and the port authority. Every time and fare in this guide was checked against the sources listed above on 9 October 2026; where we had to estimate (a walk, a taxi in traffic), the text says so. Timetables change — if you find one that has, tell us and we will fix it.
On the day
Cash, Wi-Fi, toilets, steps: the practical facts
Tender or dock
No. Ships berth alongside: big ships at Manyo No. 3 in Fushiki, small ships (Azamara Pursuit, Le Soléal) at the Kaiwo Berth in Shinminato. The prefecture names the berth per call.
At the terminal
None. Manyo No. 3 is a cargo wharf inside a restricted compound; no building, exchange desk, shop or Wi-Fi is published. Takaoka City staff have greeted arriving ships.
Cash, cards, ATM
No ATM at either berth. Fushiki Post Office is about 710 m from the wharf (ATM hours not published). Get cash at Takaoka or Toyama Station, where 7-Eleven and Japan Post machines generally take foreign cards.

Nothing is published for the wharf; use the ship before you leave. Takaoka Station, the road station at Amaharashi and the Kittokito fish market are the public buildings on the route.
Luggage
No lockers are published at either berth or in our station sources. Travel light; there is nowhere to leave a bag at Fushiki.
Steps and slopes
Zuiryuji is a flat 10-minute walk from Takaoka Station; the Shinminato Bridge walkway has lifts at both ends. The Kaiwomaru is a 1930 sailing ship; ask at the park about access. The port-pickup tour (92136P738) lists wheelchair-accessible transport.
English
No English desk is published on the wharf. Takaoka Station has a tourist information desk on its second-floor concourse (a forum report). The fish-auction phone line is Japanese only.
Pharmacy, hospital
Dial 119 for an ambulance and 110 for police; the JNTO Japan Visitor Hotline, 050-3816-2787, answers in English 24 h. No clinic or pharmacy is published at either berth.
With children
The Takaoka Daibutsu is free; the Kaiwomaru charges ¥200 for children and ¥600 for a family ticket; the Glass Art Museum is free for high-school age and under.
If this is your first Japanese port, everyone goes through face-to-face immigration at the terminal; allow 30 to 60 minutes after the ship clears. What happens at your first Japanese port →

11:00–21:00 (the shop's own page); some listings give a 14:00–16:00 break on weekdays
Masu-zushi, pressed trout sushi in a wooden boxTake-away; it keeps for the ship. Also sold at the Kittokito market in Shinminato.
Ships over about 32,000 tons use Manyo No. 3 Berth in the Fushiki district of Takaoka City, a cargo wharf with no terminal. Westerdam, Diamond Princess, Noordam, Asuka and MSC Bellissima have all used it. Small ships such as Azamara Pursuit and Le Soléal use the Kaiwo Berth at Shinminato, 8 km east, beside Kaiwomaru Park.
Is there a cruise terminal or shuttle bus at Fushiki port?
No terminal: no building, shop, exchange desk or ATM is published at Manyo No. 3. No shuttle is run by the prefecture or Takaoka City. Princess runs a paid shuttle to Takaoka Station (US$22 reported in 2024); Holland America's arrangement is not published. A taxi to Takaoka Station is 8.5 km, about 14 minutes and about ¥4,500.
How do I get from Fushiki port to Takaoka Station?
Ship shuttle (where offered) or taxi, about 15 minutes. Or walk about 20 minutes to JR Fushiki Station and take the Himi line, 14 minutes and ¥210; weekday trains towards Takaoka leave at 08:39, 09:11, 09:45, 10:38, 12:13, 13:02, 14:40 and 16:25. IC cards work on the line since March 2026.
How do I get from the cruise port to Toyama city?
Shuttle or taxi to Takaoka Station, then the Ainokaze Toyama Railway to Toyama Station: ¥390, about 20 minutes. A taxi all the way is 25 km, about 36 minutes and about ¥13,300 at the tariff floor. From Toyama Station a tram reaches the Glass Art Museum in about 12 minutes.
Can you see the Tateyama mountains from the cruise port?
Only on a clear day, and best from the Amaharashi Coast, 3 km from the wharf: a taxi of about 4 minutes and ¥1,800, or two stops on the Himi line. The Shinminato Bridge walkway gives the same range over the port. Look across the bay at breakfast; if the peaks are hidden, plan a museum day.
Can I visit the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route on a cruise call?
No. It opens in mid-April (15 April in 2026; 2027 not announced), so a 6 April call misses it, and from Fushiki it is 47 km to Tateyama Station and then five modes of transport to Murodo. The only Alpine Route tour in the catalogue needs a 13-hour call, longer than any published call here.
Can I get to Gokayama or Shirakawa-go from Fushiki port?
Gokayama's Ainokura village is 54 km from the wharf, about 70 minutes each way by car; a taxi is about ¥28,000 each way at the tariff floor, so a ship tour or a car tour is the practical way. The World Heritage Bus from Takaoka Station costs ¥2,800 but runs only a few times a day. Shirakawa-go is 73 km each way and not advisable on an 8–10-hour call without a guide.
What can I do on an 8-hour call at Fushiki?
About 6 usable hours. From Manyo No. 3: Takaoka (Zuiryuji, the Daibutsu, Yamachosuji, lunch) plus Amaharashi by taxi on the way back, or Takaoka plus Toyama city by train with no Amaharashi. From the Kaiwo Berth: the Kaiwomaru, the bridge walkway and the fish market on foot, with Takaoka by tram if you want it.
How much does the Zuiryuji temple cost, and when is it open?
¥500 for adults, with no senior rate; 9:00–16:30 (last entry 16:00), closing at 16:00 from 10 December to 31 January. It is a 10-minute walk from Takaoka Station or about 17 minutes and ¥5,100 by taxi from the Fushiki wharf. Allow 45–60 minutes.
Do I need cash at Fushiki–Toyama?
Yes. No sight, market or restaurant in our sources publishes card acceptance, the Manyosen tram takes cash or IC cards only, and there is no ATM at either berth. The nearest cash machine to the wharf is Fushiki Post Office, about 710 m away; the reliable ones are at Takaoka and Toyama Stations.
Is there a Wednesday problem at this port?
Yes. The Kaiwomaru sailing ship is closed every Wednesday, the Shinminato fish auction does not run on Sundays or Wednesdays, the Glass Art Museum closes on the first and third Wednesdays and Nishicho Taiki's main shop is shut. The 6 April 2027 Westerdam call is a Tuesday; the 5 May 2027 Mitsui Ocean Fuji call is a Wednesday.
What is the best tour from the Fushiki–Toyama cruise port?
For a party of up to seven on a 10-hour call, the private day with a guide and vehicle that names Fushiki Port (92136P738, US$388 per person). For Gokayama, the car tour that lists port pickup (452423P297), confirmed in writing, or Holland America's Inami and Gokayama coach (US$149). Holland America's excursions start at US$119. No listing promises in writing to return you to the ship.
