Why Kobe sweets & sake bottles is famous
Kobe's pastry trade begins with the foreign residents of the 1870s and the German and Swiss bakers who followed. The city now has one of the highest concentrations of patisseries in Japan, and its sake, from Nada, travels in bottles small enough for a cabin.
The Nada district, on the shore east of central Kobe, is where many of Japan's best-known sake brands are brewed. Hakutsuru's brewery museum shows the process in a self-guided walk with videos explaining each step, and it is free.
It is the easy, cheap way to cover the Nada sake story on your own. The museum says visits are self-guided (it links to an English museum page). Groups of ten or more must book online; smaller parties can walk in.
The catch: Hakutsuru's own notices describe a free tasting, but the current museum page does not confirm it, so ask at the door rather than count on it. If you want a brewer to explain what you are drinking, the guided tour adds that. It also doesn't suit a very short call, as it is a rail trip east and then back.
Things worth knowing
- Get off at Hanshin Sumiyoshi, not Uozaki; the museum puts Sumiyoshi at 5 minutes on foot.
- Parties of ten or more must reserve online; for 100+ or same-day group bookings, phone 078-822-8907.

- There is no quick ship shuttle here; allow the return trip before all-aboard.

Where the 1 hr 30 min goes
Counted from the moment you step off the gangway, about 30 minutes after the ship arrives. The hour before all-aboard is not in this bar; it is already set aside.
15 minutes each way is the measured figure for motomachi arcades — about 15 min walk from naka pier; port liner to sannomiya from port terminal, not the optimistic one. If your ship is late, cut the 1 hr in the middle. Never cut the hour at the end.
