Why it's worth your hours

Japan has twelve castles whose keeps survived from the feudal era. Kochi is the only one where the keep and the lord's residential palace both survived together — everywhere else, the palace is gone and only the tower remains. Walking from the tatami rooms into the defensive keep, in sequence, is something you can do here and nowhere else.

Built from 1601 by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, burned in 1727 and rebuilt by 1749, it has stood since. The stairs inside are close to ladders, unchanged, with rope handrails — which tells you more about samurai daily life than any display case.

FAQ

What makes Kochi Castle special?

It is the only one of Japan's twelve surviving original castles where both the keep and the lord's residential palace survived together. Everywhere else only the tower remains, so Kochi is the only place you can walk from the living quarters into the defensive keep in sequence.

How long does Kochi Castle take?

About ninety minutes for the grounds, palace and keep. It sits five minutes from Hirome Market, so castle plus a long market lunch is a comfortable four-hour block from the cruise berth including the shuttle each way.

Whatever the plan: back aboard 60 minutes before all-aboard. Full port context on the Kochi guide.
