Thin beef seared on a hot plate and finished with a lemon and soy sauce, then rice tipped into the remaining sauce at the end. It grew out of the steak the US Navy brought here after the war, adapted to Japanese taste, and almost nowhere else in Japan serves it.
- Short enough to be certain of: 2 hr door to door, so even a tender day works.
- Reachable on foot from the berth, so no timetable can strand you.
- 2 hr door to door needs a 4-hour call: a 2–3 hour stop cannot hold it. Pick something closer instead.
Why Lemon steak is famous
Lemon steak is thin beef on a hot iron plate with a soy and lemon sauce, which grew out of the steak the US Navy brought here after the war, adapted to Japanese taste. The remaining sauce is poured over rice, which is the part locals insist on.
