Sasebo Cruise Port: The Complete Guide for 2026–27

Sasebo is a do-it-yourself port, and a cheap one. Most ships tie up at Miura, beside JR Sasebo Station, and from there a ¥390 bus puts you on the Kujukushima boat through a drowned coastline of 208 islands, with the Tenkaiho viewpoint, a Sasebo burger and a kilometre of covered arcade fitting round it on the usual 08:50–18:00 call. The alternative is Huis Ten Bosch, a Dutch-style resort town that opens at 10:00 and costs ¥7,600 a day: 20–30 minutes by train from Miura, 10 minutes by free shuttle bus from the second berth at Uragashira. On a 9-hour call pick one of the two; both fit only on about 10 hours. Kuroshima Church does not fit any scheduled call. The decision to make: islands or the Dutch town — and your berth, which you should check the night before, largely makes it for you.

Your call, your day

What fits the time your ship gives you?

Pick your ship from the official Sasebo schedule — or just the hours you have — and this page picks the plan and the tours that fit, with the hour before all-aboard already set aside.

Kujukushima, the ninety-nine islands

Officially 208 islands, large and small, strung 25 km north from the harbour mouth — said to be the densest island cluster in Japan, and a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World club since 2018. You see it best from the 50-minute Pearl Queen boat, then from above at Tenkaiho.

From the ship From Miura, walk 5 minutes to Sasebo Station and take the Saihi bus to Pearl Sea Resort: 18 minutes on the rapid service, ¥390. A taxi takes about 10 minutes, from about ¥2,700. From Uragashira, take the free water bus to the station first (about 20 minutes).

Huis Ten Bosch

A full-scale Dutch-style resort town with canals, reached by train or, from the second berth, by a free shuttle bus. It opens at 10:00 and needs at least three hours inside to justify the ticket.

From the ship From Uragashira, a free shuttle bus of about 10 minutes. From Miura, JR from Sasebo Station to Huis Ten Bosch in 18–31 minutes, ¥340, then a 7-minute walk to the gate. 1DAY Passport ¥7,600 (¥5,900 for 65+).

The Sasebo burger and the covered arcade

Hamburgers came to Sasebo with the US Navy around 1950; today more than 25 shops make a Sasebo burger to an official definition — cooked after you order, with fresh vegetables and the shop's own sauce. Eat one in the arcade, a covered street about 1 km long.

From the ship On foot from Miura: Sasebo Station 5 minutes, the arcade about 8 minutes. On the official burger map most burgers cost about ¥700–¥1,400.

Why Sasebo is worth getting off the ship for

Sasebo is a naval and dockyard city, and what it offers a cruise passenger lies just outside the town. North of the harbour mouth, Kujukushima — "ninety-nine islands", though the official count is 208 — spreads for 25 km: wooded islets packed so closely that the city calls it the densest island cluster in Japan. You see it from a boat that leaves every hour, and from a hilltop viewpoint 165 m above it. Across the bay is Huis Ten Bosch, a full-scale Dutch-style resort town with canals. And in town there is the Sasebo burger, a legacy of the US Navy base, sold along a kilometre of covered arcade.

The good news is cost and simplicity. From the central berth the islands are a ¥390 bus ride, the boat is ¥2,200, the viewpoint is free, and nothing needs booking. The one real choice is between the islands and the Dutch town: each fills most of a 9-hour call. This guide is built from the prefecture's official call schedule, the city's own terminal leaflets and maps, and the bus, boat, park and ferry operators' published times and fares, all checked on 30 September 2026.

What Sasebo is not: a temple-and-castle town. If a hidden-Christian church is the reason you chose this cruise, read the Kuroshima section before you get your hopes up.

First: which berth are you at?

Sasebo has two cruise berths, one in the city centre and one across the bay, and each suits a different day. The names cause confusion, so here are the official ones.

Both terminals have toilets, including accessible ones, and a tourist-information desk; Miura also has Wi-Fi and a shop, and Uragashira a lift.

The official schedule for October–December 2026 lists 16 calls: 13 at Miura and 3 at Uragashira. You will read that "the biggest ships go to Uragashira". The schedule says otherwise: MSC Bellissima, at 171,598 tons the largest ship calling this year, uses Miura on all eight of its 2026 calls, and Adora Magic City did too. In practice Uragashira takes the second ship on two-ship days — Mitsui Ocean Fuji on 21 December, while Eastern Venus has Miura — and some ships regardless of size, often China-market ones such as Adora Mediterranea. That is our reading of the 2025 and 2026 lists, not a published rule, so check your berth in the ship's daily programme the night before.

Getting from the Miura terminal into Sasebo

Miura is the easy berth: JR Sasebo Station and its bus terminal are a 5-minute walk, and almost everything starts there.

Weekday buses from Sasebo Station to Pearl Sea leave at 7:17, 8:29, 9:31 (rapid), 10:31, 11:33, 12:31, 13:31, 13:50, 14:31 and 15:28; weekend and holiday departures are 7:19, 8:31, 9:31, 10:31, 11:33, 12:31, 13:31, 13:53 and 14:31. The 18-minute rapid buses are the 9:31, 10:31, 12:31, 13:31 and 14:31. Buses back from Pearl Sea leave at 9:59, 10:59, 12:05 (12:03 at weekends), 12:59, 13:59, 14:29 (14:30), 14:59 and then 16:00 on weekdays but 17:04 at weekends. Saihi's map of stops affected by its 1 October 2026 timetable change does not mark this route. You take a numbered ticket when you board and pay in cash as you get off; we could not confirm that IC cards work on it.

Taxi fares here are our estimates: the distance charge in the official Sasebo tariff (¥770 for the first kilometre, then ¥100 per 263 m), which leaves out waiting time, so treat them as the floor. Drive times come from map routing without traffic; allow a quarter to a half more. Taxis wait at the terminal, but the city itself says they are limited when app users take them and recommends GO, Uber or DiDi.

The Sasebo Tourist Information Center, inside the station, is open 9:00–18:00 every day, takes cash, cards and PayPay, sells naval harbour cruise tickets and books the fixed-price taxi plans.

Getting out of Uragashira

Uragashira is not the dead end it is often said to be. The city's own English map for the Sasebo Cruise Center lists:

ToHowTimeCost

The map adds that the shuttle bus "may not be available at all times", and the timetables are not published, so ask at the terminal desk as soon as you land when the shuttle and water bus run and when the last one returns. There is no cash machine or convenience store within 1.5 km of the terminal on the map — bring yen or rely on cards.

Sasebo to Kujukushima: what is actually possible

Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort, where the island boats leave

Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort, about 6 km by road from the station, is the base for the island boats, the aquarium and a Kujukushima visitor centre; entry to the resort is free.

  • The Pearl Queen. The main sightseeing boat, 50 minutes through the islands, leaves about 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00; the operator warns that the 12:00 is suspended in some seasons, though its October–November calendar shows all six. From 7 to 22 December 2026 the Pearl Queen is in dock and does not sail — that rules it out for the Eastern Venus calls on 11 and 21 December; it is back for Star Navigator on 23 December. Adults pay ¥2,200, children ¥1,100; there is no senior discount. Individuals cannot reserve. Tickets for every sailing of the day go on sale at the window from about 9:00, and web tickets must be exchanged there for a timed seat. It carries 280 people but has only 118 seats, and it is barrier-free: a lift, an accessible toilet, room for wheelchairs, and three wheelchairs lent free. The boat runs in light rain; strong wind or heavy rain can cancel it. The pirate-ship boat is suspended.
  • The aquarium. Umikirara, beside the pier, is open 9:00–18:00 until October (last entry 17:30) and 9:00–17:00 from November (16:30). Adults ¥1,470, ¥1,250 for 70 and over with ID; most visits take about an hour. It opens an hour before the first boat, which makes it the natural thing to do while you wait.
  • By bus or taxi. The 09:31 rapid bus from Sasebo Station reaches Pearl Sea at 09:49, in time for the 10:00 boat. Door to door, the boat alone takes about 2½–3 hours from Miura; boat plus aquarium, about 3½.
  • From Uragashira. Water bus to the station, then the bus: possible on a full call, but it spends most of your morning getting there.

Tenkaiho: the view from above

The view from Tenkaiho over the islands of Kujukushima
The view from Tenkaiho over the islands of KujukushimaPhoto: mahlervv / CC BY 3.0

Tenkaiho is a free viewpoint 165 m up, with a 180-degree view over the islands. In spring about 150,000 rape blossoms flower there (late March to early April); in autumn, about 150,000 cosmos, in mid to late October — the Adora Mediterranea, Eastern Venus, Viking Orion and Silver Moon calls from 13 to 27 October fall inside that window. The bus is about 40 minutes and "very limited", so take a taxi: about 16 minutes from Miura, about 12 from Pearl Sea. Forty minutes on top is enough. In cloud there is no point going.

Two other viewpoints appear in the city's taxi plans: Ishidake (191 m, a 360-degree island view, 15 minutes' walk from the zoo bus stop) and Yumiharidake, the city-and-harbour view.

Huis Ten Bosch: how to do it well

Huis Ten Bosch, the Dutch-style resort town near Uragashira

Huis Ten Bosch opens at 10:00 every day from August to December 2026 and closes at 21:00 on most days (last entry 20:00), 22:00 on Saturdays and some holidays. Every autumn call date closes at 21:00 except Saturday 17 October.

TicketAdult65 and over
1DAY Passport¥7,600¥5,900
After 3 Passport (from 15:00)¥5,900¥4,700

Prices rise on special dates ("¥7,600~" on the official page). Junior-high and high-school students pay ¥6,600 and primary-school children ¥5,000 for the 1DAY Passport. Web tickets work straight from your phone; tickets are not refundable; re-entry is allowed with a hand stamp. Disability tickets are sold only at the gate with the original certificate. The Harbour Zone is free to walk into except on fireworks days — a fair compromise if you want the look of the place without the full ticket.

To justify ¥7,600 you want at least three hours inside. From Miura, the 10:11 train arrives at 10:34 and the 14:35 train back reaches Sasebo at 15:06, which gives about 3½ hours in the park on an 08:50–18:00 call. From Uragashira the free shuttle takes 10 minutes, so you can be at the gate for the 10:00 opening and stay until about 15:45 — five hours.

The Sasebo burger, lemon steak and the arcade

The burger. According to the city, the recipe came from the US Navy base around 1950, and Sasebo calls itself the place where the hamburger arrived in Japan. The shops began promoting it together in 2001, and a business cooperative followed in 2010. The official definition is short: made after the order is taken, by a business based in Sasebo, with fresh raw vegetables and the shop's own sauce. More than 25 shops qualify, and no two burgers are alike. The ones that fit a port day:

Big Man's Kami-Kyomachi shop calls itself the birthplace of the bacon-egg burger (¥1,000); Hikari has been going since 1951. Hours are from the official 2025 burger map; check with the shop.

Lemon steak is the city's other dish: thin beef on a hot plate, a lemon-flavoured soy sauce poured on just before it is done, and rice dunked in what is left. Restaurant Honjin, 6 minutes' walk from the station in the Miura terminal's own district, serves lunch 11:15–15:00 and takes cards. Hachinoya (11:30–20:30) takes cards and handles English; Lemoned Raymond and Shirobara are closed on Tuesdays, and Shirobara takes no cards.

The arcade — "Saruku City 4○3", the Sankacho and Yonkacho streets — runs for about a kilometre, covered, on the harbour side of the station. It is the rain plan and the last-hour plan: about 8 minutes from the ship.

Kuroshima, Hario and the rest: what fits and what does not

Kuroshima Church. A brick Romanesque church completed in 1902 and built by the island's believers with, in the official tourism page's words, 400,000 bricks. It is part of the Hidden Christian Sites World Heritage listing. The problem is the ferry, which leaves from Ainoura pier, about 22 minutes by taxi from Sasebo Station, not from the ship: out at 10:00, 13:00 and 17:00, back from the island at 11:10 and 15:30, 50 minutes each way, ¥950 (¥1,810 return). There are no buses or taxis on the island; the church is 25–30 minutes' walk from the port, or 10–15 minutes by rented e-bike. The 15:30 boat lands at Ainoura at 16:20, which puts you back at Miura about 16:45 at best — after the 16:30 target of an 18:00 departure. No call in the published schedule fits it by public ferry. A bookable sea taxi from Ainoura is the only way, and we could not find its price. Visits also need advance contact with the Hidden Christian Sites Information Center (095-823-7650).

The three concrete masts of the Hario radio towers
The three concrete masts of the Hario radio towersPhoto: Dyamasan / CC BY-SA 4.0

The Hario radio towers. Three reinforced-concrete masts, each about 136 m tall, built by the Imperial Navy in 1922 and now a National Important Cultural Property; the Pearl Harbor attack signal is said to have been relayed from here. Free, open 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00, with the preservation society on site. From Uragashira it is 10 minutes by taxi (about ¥2,600); from Miura it is about 24 minutes and ¥7,800 — worth it only if radio towers are your thing.

The JMSDF Sasebo Museum ("Sail Tower"). Free, 9:30–17:00, about 1.3 km from Miura. It closes on the third Thursday of each month — which is 19 November, MSC Bellissima's call.

The naval harbour cruise. An hour past US Navy and Japanese naval ships and the dockyard, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only, 11:30, ¥2,500, back at 12:30. Reservations open on the web or by phone at 17:00 on the 1st of the month three months ahead; tickets are issued only at the Tourist Information Center in the station, by 11:00 on the day. It boards opposite the Shin-minato terminal, a few minutes from Miura — be there by 11:15. Strong wind or high waves cancel it. It fits Viking Orion's Sunday call on 25 October, and the Saturday Uragashira call on 17 October if the water bus gets you to town in time.

Uragashira Repatriation Memorial Peace Park. About 1.4 million people landed here from overseas between 1945 and 1950. The small museum is free and open 9:00–18:00 (17:00 from November), about 600 m from the Sasebo Cruise Center.

Mikawachi porcelain. The Traditional Industry Hall closed on 31 March 2026 for renovation until autumn 2028. The neighbouring Utsuwa History Museum shows the ware in the meantime, but we could not confirm its hours.

Nagasaki or Fukuoka instead. Some passengers ask whether Sasebo is a gateway to Nagasaki. Sasebo's tourism association gives the journeys as about 1 hour 45 minutes to Nagasaki by the JR Seaside Liner (about 1 hour 25 minutes by Saihi bus) and about 1 hour 50 minutes to Hakata, Fukuoka, by the Midori limited express — each way, from Sasebo Station, 5 minutes from Miura. On an 08:50–18:00 call, with the gangway at 16:30, that leaves roughly three hours at the far end by our arithmetic, and a missed train has no slack behind it. We would not trade Kujukushima or Huis Ten Bosch for it; if Nagasaki is the point of your trip, look at your ship's own excursion and check its return time.

The best things to do in Sasebo on a port day

Our full list, with the time each takes from the berth, is on the Sasebo top 10. In brief:

  1. Kujukushima by boat — the Pearl Queen, 50 minutes, ¥2,200; about three hours door to door from Miura.
  2. A certified Sasebo burger — made after you order; the arcade shops are 8 minutes from the ship.
  3. Tenkaiho viewpoint — the islands from 165 m, free; cosmos in mid to late October.
  4. Huis Ten Bosch — opens at 10:00; ¥7,600; the natural day from Uragashira.
  5. Lemon steak — Sasebo's own steak lunch, near the station.
  6. The Sasebo arcade, end to end — a kilometre, covered; the rain plan.
  7. Kuroshima Church — beautiful, but it does not fit a day call by public ferry.
  8. Kujukushima oysters, in a hut — October to March, in a poor year for supply.
  9. The Hario radio towers — free, 10 minutes by taxi from Uragashira.
  10. Mikawachi porcelain — the museum is closed until autumn 2028; not worth a special trip this season.

One day in Sasebo: model days

Islands, a viewpoint and a burger: the 9-hour call at Miura

Fits 08:50–18:00 at Miura, the commonest call here (Eastern Venus, seven times from October to December), and Viking Orion's 09:00–18:00 — except 11 and 21 December, when the Pearl Queen is in dock (see the note). For MSC Bellissima (07:50–16:10) and Star Navigator's early departures, see the note.

Kujukushima from the water and from above, then the town on foot, all without a booking. Times assume a weekday 08:50 arrival and 18:00 departure, so all-aboard around 17:30 and our target back at the gangway 16:30. Transport for the day comes to about ¥6,500 each for a couple sharing two taxis.

  1. 09:20Off the ship. Walk 5 minutes to Sasebo Station and bus stop 6 in front of it. Get yen at the FamilyMart by the station if you need it.
  2. 09:31Saihi rapid bus towards Pearl Sea Resort / Kujukushima Aquarium, arriving 09:49. ¥390, paid in cash as you get off (take a numbered ticket when you board).
  3. 09:50Buy a ticket for the 10:00 Pearl Queen at the window (¥2,200; cash, card, iD, WAON or PayPay). There are no reservations; if 10:00 is full, take 11:00 and swap the next two steps.
  4. 10:00Pearl Queen through the islands, 50 minutes. It carries 280 people but has 118 seats, so board early if you want to sit.
  5. 10:50Umikirara aquarium next to the pier, about an hour (¥1,470; ¥1,250 for 70+ with ID).
  6. 11:50Lunch at Pearl Sea: a Sasebo burger at Lucky's Kashimae (11:00–17:00, closed Tuesdays) or Bell Beach Pearl Sea, or lemon steak at Kujukushima Kaiyu (11:00–17:00).
  7. 12:45Taxi to Tenkaiho, about 12 minutes and from about ¥3,200 (our estimate). There is no rank we could confirm at Pearl Sea: ask staff to call one, or use GO, Uber or DiDi. No taxi? Take the 12:59 rapid bus back to the station (arrives 13:18) and skip to the arcade.
  8. 13:00Tenkaiho, 165 m above the islands, with a 180-degree view. Free. About 150,000 cosmos flower here in mid to late October.
  9. 13:40Taxi to the arcade, about 16 minutes and from about ¥4,500 (our estimate). Then the arcade, a second burger or lemon steak, and coffee.
  10. 16:15Walk back to Miura, about 8 minutes from the arcade. At the gangway about 16:25, just ahead of target.

Huis Ten Bosch by train: a 9-hour call at Miura

Fits calls departing at 18:00 from Miura — Eastern Venus, Viking Orion, Luminara, Silver Moon. On Star Navigator's 07:00–16:00 the park's 10:00 opening leaves too little time; do the islands instead.

Three and a half hours inside Huis Ten Bosch and a burger on the way back, with nothing booked but an optional web ticket. Train times are from a route search for Tuesday 6 October; check JR Kyushu's timetable for your date. Target back at the gangway 16:30.

  1. 09:20Off the ship and walk 5 minutes to JR Sasebo Station. The Tourist Information Center inside (9:00–18:00) takes cash, cards and PayPay, and there are ATMs close by.
  2. 10:11JR Seaside Liner straight through to Huis Ten Bosch, arriving 10:34. ¥340 by ticket or IC card.
  3. 10:40Walk about 7 minutes to the entry gate. 1DAY Passport ¥7,600 (¥5,900 for 65+ with ID), or buy on the web beforehand and show your phone. Re-entry is allowed with a hand stamp.
  4. 10:45Huis Ten Bosch: the canals and the Dutch-style town, with lunch inside. The Harbour Zone is free to walk into if you would rather not buy the full ticket.
  5. 14:20Head back to the station. Do not cut it finer: trains run about hourly.
  6. 14:35JR back to Sasebo, arriving 15:06.
  7. 15:10The arcade and a burger — Big Man Sasebo Dining is in the arcade itself (10:00–20:00).
  8. 16:10Walk back to Miura. At the gangway about 16:20, 10 minutes ahead of target.

Hario towers and Huis Ten Bosch: a 9-hour call at Uragashira

Fits 08:50–18:00 at Uragashira (Adora Mediterranea, Tuesday 13 and Saturday 17 October) and other second-berth calls. For Mitsui Ocean Fuji's 13:30–23:00 on 21 December, see the note.

Uragashira sits on Hario Island, 10 minutes from both Huis Ten Bosch and the 1922 naval radio towers — so here the Dutch town is the natural day, and the towers are a short, free detour. Target back at the gangway 16:30.

  1. 09:20Off the ship. Taxis wait at the terminal but can run short; the city suggests GO, Uber or DiDi. Book one or ask the driver to wait.
  2. 09:25Taxi to the Hario radio towers, about 10 minutes and from about ¥2,600 (our estimate).
  3. 09:35Hario radio towers: three concrete masts about 136 m tall, built by the Imperial Navy in 1922. Free, with the preservation society guiding visitors on site; open 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00.
  4. 10:30Taxi to Huis Ten Bosch, about 10 minutes and from about ¥3,000 (our estimate). No taxi rank is documented at the towers, so keep the same car.
  5. 10:45Huis Ten Bosch, 1DAY Passport ¥7,600 (¥5,900 for 65+). Five unhurried hours, with lunch inside.
  6. 13:00Afternoon in the park; on the Saturday call it stays open to 22:00, on the Tuesday to 21:00 — neither matters to you.
  7. 15:45Leave for the gate. Ask at the terminal in the morning when the free shuttle bus runs back; otherwise a taxi takes about 9 minutes, from about ¥2,800.
  8. 16:10At the gangway about 16:10, 20 minutes ahead of target.

How to think about your hours

Work backwards from the ship. Your all-aboard time is usually 30 minutes before departure (check the daily programme), you want to be back at the gangway an hour before that, and the first half hour after arrival goes on getting off. So the time you can actually use is the call length minus about two hours.

Every call on the October–December 2026 schedule is 8 to 11 hours, and none is an overnight. The commonest by far is 08:50–18:00 (nine of 16), mostly Eastern Venus on its round trips from Busan. The shortest are Star Navigator's 07:00–15:00 on 23 December and MSC Bellissima's 07:50–16:10 on 19 November; the longest is Silver Moon's 07:00–18:00 on 27 October. See every date on the Sasebo cruise schedule. No 2027 schedule has been published yet, and the prefecture notes that some calls are never made public.

Taxi plans, the harbour cruise and tours

There is no Sasebo tour in our catalogue, and we will not pad this page with weak ones. You do not need one here: the bus, the boat and the train are cheap, frequent enough and simple. What is worth knowing is what the official tourism association sells:

  • Fixed-price taxi plans from the Tourist Information Center in Sasebo Station, 5 minutes from Miura: Tenkaiho and back, about 1½ hours with about 50 minutes at the viewpoint, ¥11,700 per car for up to four, or ¥18,000 for a jumbo taxi for up to nine. The Kujukushima Tourism Park and Ishidake plans cost the same; the one-hour Yumiharidake plan is ¥8,200 (¥12,800 jumbo). Book on the web and prepay by card, or by phone to pay cash; cancelling is free up to 11 days before, then 20% (10–8 days), 30% (7–2 days), 40% the day before and 50% on the day. Some viewpoints involve unpaved paths.
  • The SASEBO naval harbour cruise, ¥2,500, weekends and holidays at 11:30.
  • The Pearl Queen itself, bought at the window on the day.

Who should use what: a couple on a 9-hour Miura call should follow the first model day on their own and book the Tenkaiho taxi plan only if they want it arranged. A group of six does best with the jumbo taxi plan — ¥3,000 each for Tenkaiho — then the bus to the Pearl Queen. For limited mobility, the Pearl Queen and the aquarium are both wheelchair-friendly, and a taxi from Miura to Pearl Sea takes about 10 minutes. More ideas are on our Sasebo plans page.

About the return to the ship. None of these services promises to return you to the ship, and none needs to: the taxi plans run to a fixed duration from the station, the harbour cruise ends at 12:30, and the Pearl Queen is 50 minutes (and does not sail 7–22 December 2026). The risks are the weekend bus gap at Pearl Sea (nothing between 14:59 and 17:04) and the free Uragashira water bus and shuttle, whose last run you must ask about on the day. Book a taxi through GO, Uber or DiDi rather than hoping for one at Pearl Sea or the towers, and aim to be at the gangway an hour before all-aboard.

Cash machines. From Miura, the station is your bank: a FamilyMart about 35 m from Sasebo Station, a 7-Eleven about 175 m and Sasebo Ekimae Post Office about 185 m. 7-Eleven and Japan Post machines generally take foreign cards. There is nothing within 1.5 km of the Uragashira terminal, and nothing at Pearl Sea Resort — the nearest post office is about 800 m away. Carry ¥5,000 in notes and coins for buses and small shops.

Closed days against the call dates. Tuesdays (6, 13 and 27 October) close Log Kit's main shop, Lucky's Kashimae at Pearl Sea, Shirobara and Lemoned Raymond. Mondays (26 October, 30 November, 21 December) close Log Kit's main shop and Y's Burger. Wednesdays (18 November, 23 December) close Hikari and C&B Burgers. Thursdays (5 and 19 November) close Log Kit's station shop, and 19 November, the third Thursday, also closes the Sail Tower. Big Man in the arcade has irregular closing days only and is the safe bet.

When to go: seasons and crowds

  • Autumn (October–December) is when the cruise calls are. Average highs are 24.0 °C in October, 18.5 °C in November and 12.9 °C in December, with about 100 mm of rain a month. Cosmos at Tenkaiho flower in mid to late October.
  • Oysters. Kujukushima oysters are served from October to March in the waterfront huts. The 2026 supply is poor: the November 2026 oyster festival at Pearl Sea is cancelled because the summer heat left too few oysters. When the huts open this season has not been announced.
  • Spring. Cherry blossom in nearby Nagasaki opens around 23 March in a normal year and is full about 2 April; rape blossom covers Tenkaiho in late March and early April.
  • Summer is hot and wet: June and July each average over 320 mm of rain, and August highs are 31.8 °C.
  • Typhoons approach northern Kyushu about four times a year, most often in August and September; in November, never on the normals.
  • Crowds. The Pearl Queen fills on holidays, and the operator asks passengers to come to the window early on busy days.
  • Rain plan: the arcade, the Umikirara aquarium, the free Sail Tower and Huis Ten Bosch's indoor attractions. The Pearl Queen runs in light rain; the viewpoints are pointless in cloud.

Small ships such as Silver Moon and Star Navigator call here this season; see small-ship cruises in Japan.

Mistakes we see passengers make

  1. Assuming the biggest ships go to Uragashira. Many pages say so; the official schedule does not. MSC Bellissima (171,598 tons) and Adora Magic City use Miura, which is rated for 180,000-ton ships. Uragashira takes the second ship on two-ship days and some mid-size ships, often China-market ones. Check the daily programme.
  2. Thinking Uragashira is cut off. The city lists a free water bus to Sasebo Station (about 20 minutes) and a free shuttle bus to Huis Ten Bosch (about 10 minutes). They may not run at all times, so ask at the terminal for the day's times as soon as you get off.
  3. Queuing at Huis Ten Bosch before 10:00. It opens at 10:00 every day this autumn. From Miura, the 10:11 train is early enough.
  4. Trying to book the Pearl Queen before you sail. Individuals cannot. Timed tickets for all sailings go on sale at the window from about 9:00; even web tickets must be exchanged there. On busy days, go straight to the window.
  5. Missing the weekend bus gap at Pearl Sea. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays nothing leaves Pearl Sea for the station between 14:59 and 17:04. A 17:04 bus is too late for an 18:00 ship.
  6. Planning Kuroshima Church on a day call. The ferry leaves Ainoura pier (about 22 minutes by taxi from the station) at 10:00, 13:00 and 17:00, and the island has no buses or taxis. The only return that fits gets you back to Miura about 16:45 at best — after the 16:30 target of an 18:00 departure.
  7. Going to Mikawachi for the porcelain museum. The Mikawachi Traditional Industry Hall closed on 31 March 2026 for renovation until autumn 2028. The city's own Uragashira map still lists it.
  8. Counting on the taxi rank. The city itself warns that free taxis are limited when app users take them. Install GO, Uber or DiDi before you arrive.

Quick answers

Sasebo cruise port questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Sasebo?

At two quays, both 370 m long, so there is no tendering. Most ships use Miura, in the city centre, where the terminal is the Sasebo Port International Terminal ("Yoko Terrace"), 5 minutes' walk from JR Sasebo Station. The second berth is Uragashira, on Hario Island near Huis Ten Bosch, whose terminal is the Sasebo Cruise Center. Of the 16 calls on the official schedule from October to December 2026, 13 are at Miura and 3 at Uragashira. Check your berth in the daily programme the night before.

Which cruise ships call at Sasebo, and which berth do they use?

16 calls from October to December 2026 on the official schedule: Eastern Venus (most of them, on round trips from Busan), MSC Bellissima, Viking Orion, Silver Moon, Luminara, Star Navigator and Adora Mediterranea, plus Mitsui Ocean Fuji. Uragashira takes the second ship on two-ship days and some mid-size ships — Adora Mediterranea on 13 and 17 October and Mitsui Ocean Fuji on 21 December. It is not the big-ship berth: MSC Bellissima (171,598 tons) uses Miura. Every date is on our Sasebo cruise schedule.

What is at the Sasebo Port International Terminal?

The Miura terminal, at Hizukushi-machi 1-42, has toilets (including accessible ones), Wi-Fi, a tourist-information desk, a shop and a police post, according to the city's leaflet; it lists no cash machine or currency exchange. The nearest cash is by JR Sasebo Station, 5 minutes' walk: a FamilyMart about 35 m from the station, a 7-Eleven and the station post office within 200 m. The Uragashira terminal, the Sasebo Cruise Center, has toilets, a lift and tourist information, and no cash machine within 1.5 km.

Is there a shuttle bus, or can I walk from the Sasebo cruise terminal?

From Miura you walk: JR Sasebo Station and its bus terminal are 5 minutes away, the covered arcade about 8 minutes and the free Sail Tower naval museum about 1.3 km, so no shuttle is needed. From Uragashira the city lists a free shuttle bus to Huis Ten Bosch (about 10 minutes, 40 per bus) and a free water bus to Sasebo Station (about 20 minutes), with a warning that they may not be available at all times. Ask at the terminal desk for the day's times.

How do I get from Uragashira into Sasebo?

The city lists a free water bus from the Sasebo Cruise Center to Sasebo Station, about 20 minutes and 80 passengers per boat, and a free shuttle bus to Huis Ten Bosch, about 10 minutes. The city notes they may not always run, so ask at the terminal for times and the last sailing. A taxi to the station takes about 20 minutes without traffic and costs from about ¥5,800 (our estimate).

What can I do in Sasebo on a cruise stop?

Five things fit a 9-hour call without booking: the 50-minute Pearl Queen boat through the 208 Kujukushima islands (¥2,200, ¥390 bus from Sasebo Station); the free Tenkaiho viewpoint, 165 m above them; Huis Ten Bosch, the Dutch-style resort town (¥7,600, opens 10:00, 20–30 minutes by train); a Sasebo burger or lemon steak; and the kilometre-long covered arcade, 8 minutes' walk from Miura. On weekends and holidays add the one-hour naval harbour cruise (¥2,500, 11:30). Choose the islands or Huis Ten Bosch; both fit only on about 10 hours.

How do I get from the Sasebo cruise port to Kujukushima?

From Miura, walk 5 minutes to Sasebo Station and take the Saihi bus from stop 6 to Pearl Sea Resort: the 09:31 rapid bus takes 18 minutes, others 20–27 minutes, all ¥390 in cash. A taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs from about ¥2,700. The Pearl Queen boat leaves Pearl Sea on the hour from 10:00 to 15:00 and takes 50 minutes, except from 7 to 22 December 2026, when it is in dock. Allow about 2½–3 hours door to door.

Can I book the Kujukushima boat in advance?

No, not as an individual; only groups of 15 or more can reserve. Timed tickets for every sailing go on sale at the Pearl Sea window from about 9:00, and web tickets must be exchanged there. The fare is ¥2,200 for adults (¥1,100 children, no senior discount), and the window takes cash, cards, iD, WAON and PayPay. The boat carries 280 but has 118 seats, so board early to sit.

How do I get from the Sasebo cruise port to Tenkaiho viewpoint?

By taxi: about 16 minutes from Miura (the city map says 25) and from about ¥4,500 each way by our estimate, or about 12 minutes from Pearl Sea Resort (from about ¥3,200). The bus takes about 40 minutes and is very limited. The tourism association's fixed-price taxi plan from Sasebo Station, Tenkaiho and back in about 1½ hours, costs ¥11,700 per car for up to four. The viewpoint is free, 165 m up; allow 40 minutes, and skip it in cloud.

How do I get to Huis Ten Bosch from the cruise port, and how much is it?

From Miura, JR from Sasebo Station to Huis Ten Bosch takes 18–31 minutes and costs ¥340, then 7 minutes on foot to the gate. From Uragashira, a free shuttle bus takes about 10 minutes, or a taxi about 9 minutes from about ¥2,800. The park opens at 10:00; the 1DAY Passport is ¥7,600 (¥5,900 for 65+), and the After 3 Passport from 15:00 is ¥5,900. Allow at least three hours inside to justify the ticket.

Can I do Kujukushima and Huis Ten Bosch in one port day?

On about 10 hours at Miura, yes: the 08:29 bus to Pearl Sea, the 10:00 boat, the 10:59 bus back, the 12:02 train to Huis Ten Bosch, and the 15:35 train back, at the gangway about 16:10 with close to three hours in the park. On the usual 08:50–18:00 call, choose one: either fills most of the day.

How much is a taxi from the Sasebo cruise port?

From Miura, by our estimate from the official Sasebo tariff (¥770 for the first kilometre, then ¥100 per 263 m): Pearl Sea Resort from about ¥2,700, Tenkaiho from about ¥4,500, Huis Ten Bosch from about ¥5,700. From Uragashira: Huis Ten Bosch from about ¥2,800, the Hario towers ¥2,600, Sasebo Station ¥5,800. These leave out waiting time, so treat them as the floor. Taxis can run short at the terminal; the city recommends GO, Uber or DiDi.

Do I need a shore excursion in Sasebo, or can I go on my own?

On your own is easy here: the ¥390 bus, the ¥2,200 Pearl Queen and the ¥340 train need no booking, and there is no tour in our catalogue. If you want a driver, the official tourism association sells fixed-price taxi plans from Sasebo Station — Tenkaiho and back, about 1.5 hours, ¥11,700 per car for four or ¥18,000 for a jumbo taxi for nine. On weekends and holidays, the one-hour naval harbour cruise (¥2,500, 11:30) is worth fitting in; it can be reserved from three months ahead.

Can I see the naval ships in Sasebo?

Yes, two ways. The SASEBO naval harbour cruise passes US Navy, Japanese navy and coast guard ships and the dockyard in one hour with a guide's commentary: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only, 11:30, ¥2,500, boarding opposite the Shin-minato terminal a few minutes from Miura. Book from three months ahead and collect tickets at the station's Tourist Information Center by 11:00. The JMSDF Sasebo Museum (Sail Tower), about 1.3 km from Miura, is free, 9:30–17:00, closed the third Thursday.

Can I visit Nagasaki or Fukuoka from the Sasebo cruise port?

Possible, but it costs most of the day. Sasebo's tourism association gives about 1 hour 45 minutes to Nagasaki by JR Seaside Liner (about 1 hour 25 minutes by Saihi bus) and about 1 hour 50 minutes to Hakata, Fukuoka, by the Midori limited express — each way, from the station 5 minutes from Miura. On an 08:50–18:00 call that leaves roughly three hours there, by our arithmetic. Sasebo's own islands and Huis Ten Bosch make the better day; check return times before you go.

Can I visit Kuroshima Church on a cruise call?

Not safely on any call in the published schedule. The ferry leaves from Ainoura pier, not from the ship, at 10:00, 13:00 and 17:00, and returns at 11:10 and 15:30 (50 minutes, ¥950 one way). The island has no buses or taxis, and visits need advance contact with the Hidden Christian Sites Information Center. The 15:30 return gets you back to Miura about 16:45 at best, too late for an 18:00 departure.

What is a Sasebo burger, and where can I eat one near the port?

The official definition: made after you order, by a business based in Sasebo, with fresh raw vegetables and an original sauce. More than 25 shops qualify, most at about ¥700–¥1,400. Near Miura: Big Man Sasebo Dining in the arcade (10:00–20:00), Log Kit's takeaway inside Sasebo Station (closed Thursdays), and Sasebo C&B Burgers at the Yonkacho arcade entrance (closed Wednesdays). At Pearl Sea, Lucky's Kashimae (11:00–17:00, closed Tuesdays).

What is lemon steak, and where can I try it near the Sasebo cruise port?

Sasebo's own steak lunch: thin beef on a hot plate, with a lemon-flavoured soy sauce poured on just before it is done and rice dunked in what is left. Restaurant Honjin, 6 minutes' walk from Sasebo Station, serves lunch 11:15–15:00 and takes cards; Hachinoya (11:30–20:30) takes cards and handles English. At Pearl Sea Resort, Kujukushima Kaiyu serves it 11:00–17:00. Lemoned Raymond and Shirobara close on Tuesdays, and Shirobara takes no cards.

Do I need cash in Sasebo?

Some. The Saihi bus takes cash as you get off (¥390 to Pearl Sea), and some restaurants take cash or code payment only. The Pearl Queen boat, JR and the Tourist Information Center take cards. There is a FamilyMart about 35 m from Sasebo Station and a 7-Eleven and the station post office within 200 m; there is no ATM near the Uragashira terminal or at Pearl Sea Resort. Carry about ¥5,000 in notes and coins.

Is Sasebo manageable with limited mobility or a wheelchair?

The Kujukushima day is. Both terminals have accessible toilets, and Uragashira a lift. A taxi from Miura to Pearl Sea Resort takes about 10 minutes (from about ¥2,700); the Pearl Queen boat is barrier-free, with a lift, an accessible toilet and three wheelchairs lent free, and the Umikirara aquarium beside it also lends wheelchairs. We could not confirm low-floor buses on the Pearl Sea line. Some viewpoints on the taxi plans involve unpaved paths. Huis Ten Bosch sells disability tickets only at the gate, with the original certificate.

What is the weather like in Sasebo for a cruise call, and is it oyster season?

Average highs are 24.0 °C in October, 18.5 °C in November and 12.9 °C in December, with about 100 mm of rain a month; typhoons are rare after September. Cosmos flower at Tenkaiho in mid to late October. Kujukushima oysters are served in waterfront huts from October to March, but 2026 is a poor year: the November oyster festival at Pearl Sea is cancelled because the summer heat left too few oysters.

What can I do in Sasebo if it rains?

Stay under cover: the covered arcade, about 1 km long and 8 minutes' walk from Miura; the Umikirara aquarium at Pearl Sea (¥1,470, about an hour); the free Sail Tower naval museum; and Huis Ten Bosch's indoor attractions. The Pearl Queen boat runs in light rain but strong wind or heavy rain can cancel it, and the viewpoints such as Tenkaiho are pointless in cloud. Lemon steak or a Sasebo burger is the natural indoor lunch.
