From the berth
Miura: JR Sasebo Station about 5 min on foot, free. Uragashira: free water bus about 20 min (may not run at all times)
At Miura (Sasebo Port International Terminal, 'Yoko Terrace') the city's leaflet puts the station at 5 minutes on foot; the Japan Tourism Agency port guide says about 400 m, with the Gobangai mall about 6 minutes and the central shopping street within about 10 minutes. At Uragashira (Sasebo Cruise Center) the city's English map lists a free water bus to Sasebo Station, about 20 minutes (15 to the Gobangai mall) and says the service may not be available at all times; taxis there may be limited.
Time inside
About 45 to 75 min (estimate)
Orders are made after you ask, so there is a short wait. No source gives a time.
Hours
By shop. Examples: 10:00 to 20:00 at a flagship, 10:00 to 18:45 inside the station, 12:00 to sunset in the shelter market
From the 2025 official Sasebo Burger map (information as of December 2025): the shops publish their own hours and closing days, so check the day. Log Kit's station shop is closed Thursdays; the Base Street shop is closed Thursdays and ends when it sells out.
Cost
About ¥770 to ¥1,000 a burger
From the map: a steak burger at the Pearl Sea shop is ¥770, a special burger ¥842, and the bacon-and-egg burger at the Kami-kyomachi flagship ¥1,000. Prices are tax included on the map.
Why it's worth your hours

The Sasebo burger is a rule, not a recipe. The city's tourism site says it began around 1950, when local shops learned the recipe directly from the US Navy base, and calls Sasebo the place where the hamburger arrived in Japan. To use the name the burger must be made after the order is taken, by a company headquartered in Sasebo, with fresh raw vegetables and an original sauce. The site lists more than 25 shops, and the Sasebo Burger Business Cooperative was founded in 2010, according to the official map.

That is why they all differ. Within a short walk of the Miura quay you can try the bacon-and-egg burger at the Big Man Kami-kyomachi flagship, which the map presents as the birthplace of the bacon-and-egg burger; a takeaway at Log Kit's shop inside JR Sasebo Station; or a burger at Base Street in Tonneru Yokocho, a wartime air-raid shelter turned market. The map says the Base Street burger is made in a shelter dug during the war, with a thick, fluffy egg, and that the shop opens at 12:00 and closes at sunset or when it sells out. The Japan Tourism Agency guide describes the Sasebo arcade nearby as about 1 km of covered street through seven town blocks, billed as Japan's longest straight arcade.

The catch is that shop hours are particular. Several close one weekday and some by irregular days, and the map warns that hours can change, so a Thursday call can mean the station shop and Base Street are both shut. Big burgers are messy; the tourism site says to bite in wide and press the bag flat. If you do not eat beef or burgers, skip it and take the arcade on its own.

What you actually do here

Five things the plaques won't tell you

  1. Check the day: Log Kit's station shop and Base Street are both closed on Thursdays, per the official map.
  2. Base Street in Tonneru Yokocho opens at 12:00, so it does not suit an early lunch.
  3. At Miura the station is 5 minutes on foot and the arcade starts nearby, so there is no need for a taxi.
  4. Orders are made fresh, so expect a short wait; the Log Kit station shop recommends booking by phone to match your train, which is not needed if you are on foot.
  5. Eat it the way the tourism site suggests: bite in wide, and press the burger gently through its bag if it is a large one.

Quick answers

Questions people ask here

What makes a burger a Sasebo burger?

The tourism site gives four conditions: it is made after the order is received, the company is headquartered in Sasebo, it uses fresh raw vegetables, and it has an original sauce. The style dates to around 1950, when shops learned the recipe from the US Navy base.

How far is the Sasebo arcade from the cruise terminal?

At Miura, JR Sasebo Station is about 5 minutes on foot, the Gobangai mall about 5 to 6 minutes and the central shopping street within about 10 minutes. The arcade is described as about 1 km long. From Uragashira a free water bus runs to the station area, about 20 minutes, though the city says it may not run at all times.

Are Sasebo burger shops open on Thursdays?

Some are not. The official 2025 burger map lists Log Kit's station shop and the Base Street shop in Tonneru Yokocho as closed on Thursdays, while the Big Man flagship shows irregular closing days. Check on the day.
