Hirosaki kept its original 1611 keep, one of only twelve in Japan that survived the Meiji dismantling and the war. The castle park holds about 2,600 cherry trees, planted from the 1880s by former samurai, and is considered by many Japanese the finest hanami site in the country. It is roughly an hour inland.
