Why Hirosaki castle town is famous
Hirosaki's present keep, from the early 19th century, is one of Japan's twelve surviving original keeps; the first, five-storey keep of 1611 burned in 1627. Its interior is closed until 2033 while it is moved back onto its restored base and strengthened. The castle park holds about 2,600 cherry trees, planted from the 1880s by former samurai, and is considered by many Japanese the finest hanami site in the country. It is about an hour inland by train, and roughly two hours each way door to door from the ship.
Hirosaki Castle is the old seat of the Tsugaru clan, and the park around it is a ring of moats, stone walls and gates in the middle of the town. For a passenger with a long call it is the main alternative to staying on the Aomori waterfront.
There is one large catch for 2026, and it is not on most older guides. The keep is being hauled back onto its repaired stone base after years of wall work, and the park says its interior is closed from 24 November 2025 until 31 March 2033. What remains is the paid castle area (Honmaru and Kita-no-kuruwa), the moats and gates, and a rest house in the grounds. The park's own news item says the keep is due back on its original base in November 2026.
So go for the park and the town, not for climbing the keep. In late autumn there is a chrysanthemum and autumn-colour festival at the botanical garden, 30 October to 8 November, 9:00 to 20:00. It is a long way for a short visit: skip it on a call shorter than nine hours.
Things worth knowing
- Do not plan to climb the keep. The interior is closed until 31 March 2033; the grounds and the paid area are open.
- The park lists 1 April to 23 November 2026 as its open season, charged 9:00–17:00, so check the date if your call is in late November.
- If you are 65 or over, there is no visitor discount; only Hirosaki residents get free entry.
- The Ou Line from Aomori to Hirosaki is ¥720 by ticket and leaves roughly hourly, so note the last train back before you leave the platform.
Where the 7 hr goes
Counted from the moment you step off the gangway, about 30 minutes after the ship arrives. The hour before all-aboard is not in this bar; it is already set aside.
110 minutes each way is the measured figure for taxi, jr and loop bus, ~110 min, not the optimistic one. If your ship is late, cut the 3 hr 20 min in the middle. Never cut the hour at the end.
